Rock band cancels tour after drummer hauled off plane by US border control
An American rock band has been forced to cancel its European tour after its drummer, Yamal Said, was detained by US Customs and Border Protection in Texas.
The band explained in an online post that Said was removed from a plane at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers, despite being a legal US resident.
En route to their summer tour before the incident, the band has had no contact with Said for two days.
The drummer is a Mexican citizen but a legal permanent resident of the United States and the holder of a green card.
Said has been a resident of Austin, Texas since the 1980s, according to the Austin Chronicle.
'We are heartbroken to announce we have to cancel our upcoming European tour,' the band wrote on Instagram on Wednesday.
'Our drummer, Yamal Said, who is a Mexican citizen and lawful permanent resident of the United States (green card holder) was forcibly removed from our flight to Europe by Customs and Border Patrol [sic] at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport on Monday May 12.
'He has not been released, and we have been unable to contact him. We are currently working with an immigration lawyer to find out more information and to attempt to secure his release.'
An update to the statement on Wednesday afternoon told fans that the drummer had 'secured the legal representation he needs.'
'We are waiting to hear what comes next,' they said. 'We want to reiterate that we truly don't know what's going on. We have more questions than answers, but we will keep you posted as much as we can. At this time the family asks for privacy as they navigate the situation.'
A stalwart of the Austin music scene, Said formerly played with the band the Black and works as a music instructor for the Texas School for the Blind, according to the Austin Chronicle.
The band was scheduled to go on an eight-date European tour to play and promote their latest album Holus Bolus. The tour, alongside the Swedish band Orsak:Oslo, was scheduled to begin on 15 May in the Netherlands.
In a social media statement, Orsak:Oslo, who will continue with the tour, wrote: 'No one should be pulled off a plane and jailed for simply trying to travel and make art with their band. We won't pretend to understand the full complexity of the situation, but this should not happen anywhere.'
Said's detention is part of a wider immigration crackdown under the Trump administration.

On April 28, Trump signed an executive order targeting sanctuary cities that have acted like havens for undocumented immigrants and refused to cooperate with the federal government's moves to arrest them.
The order directs the attorney general and homeland security secretary to publish a list of cities and states that have not complied with federal laws around immigration.
The President also signed executive orders with the aim of expanding ICE's ability to arrest and detain unlawful migrants on US soil.

'I tried Gordon Ramsay's first Europe Hell's Kitchen - here's what it's like'
Gordon Ramsay has opened his first Hell's Kitchen in Europe after two decades of the famous franchise being in the US, and I tried it out to see if it's worth the international hype. Gordon Ramsay has opened his first ever Hell's Kitchen restaurant outside of the US, with a new restaurant in none other than Ibiza, Spain. Whether he's shouting that beef is underdone or garnish isn't ready, the TV chef has some iconic lines from his long-running Hell's Kitchen series. But while chefs might be feeling the heat inside the kitchen, the restaurant experience at Gordon's newest location wasn't short of luxury. Serving up signature dishes such as the Beef Wellington and scallops, alongside new European offerings such as a mouthwatering short rib and chorizo croquette, the food doesn't disappoint. While it's not something I've seen on the show, Hell's Kitchen Ibiza offers a Basque style blueberry and blackberry cheesecake, which was a surprising highlight of the meal for me. Based inside the newly refurbished Unexpected Hotel, which was previously known as Ushuaia Beach Hotel, the restaurant has the iconic HK walkway as you enter and serves up special edition Pharrell Williams Moet champagne and cocktails. The restaurant is the newest to join the Unexpected Hotel, and is amongst others such as the Oyster and Caviar Bar, Minami Japanese Restaurant, rooftop bar Up Ibiza Sky Society and The Beach - where the breakfast buffet includes champagne and freshly made burritos. Gordon has several Hell's Kitchen locations across the US, including in Las Vegas and Washington D.C, where his iconic show of the same name has been filmed. Beginning in 2005, the restaurants serves as sets for aspiring chefs to learn from Gordon and eventually win a place working for him. You may not find Gordon shouting at his chefs if you book in for a dinner at the new Ibiza location, but there will be plenty of unexpected twists going on throughout the five-star hotel - including fortune tellers in the lobby, DJs in bedrooms and dancers abseiling down the poolside buildings. While the hotel's bedrooms are fitted out with everything you could imagine needing, including face masks, a 'maxi bar' containing snacks, drinks and large bottles of spirits, and a huge bathtub on the balcony. If you're booking the presidential suite, which I imagine Gordon will be booking out for his visits to the White Isle, there are DJ decks in living room area, alongside a sprawling patio-style balcony. Across the road from the lively hotel is iconic open-air Ibiza superclub Ushuaia, where I headed across to after my six-course Hell's Kitchen meal to dance off the lashings of food consumed at Gordon's newest spot. Whether you want to try some of Gordon's classics or you're just looking for a spirited stay in Ibiza, the Unexpected Hotel will certainly do both.

Now it seems that Haim's surprise set on The Park stage faced more sound issues. The trio - made up of sisters Este, Danielle and Alana - made a highly anticipated return to Somerset on Saturday night. After performing on the Pyramid Stage in 2022, they returned to their stomping ground to perform to an eager crowd. However, during their live set, fans were heard to have shouted 'louder, louder'. The Mail Online has reported that other music nearby was drowning out the performance of Los Angeles-based siblings Haim had previously dropped several hints to fans that they would be performing at Worthy Farm in the weeks running up to Glastonbury. But despite the sound issues, the American rock band kept going with their performance. Their show was very well received by fans who took to social media in droves to praise the band, and declare that they should have been a headline act. Glastonbury 2025 - confirmed acts so far TICKETS to the 2025 festival sold out in just minutes before some of the acts were even confirmed. Here is who has been confirmed so far. Confirmed headliners: The 1975 will take to the Pyramid Stage on Friday. Neil Young will headline the festival for the second time after his last set in 2009 on Saturday after RAYE makes her return. Charli xcx will headline the Other Stage on Saturday night. On Sunday, Olivia Rodrigo is due to belt out her hits for her first appearance while Rod Stewart will perform in the legends slot. More acts to appear on the Other Stage include Loyle Carner and The Prodigy. Doechii will make her Glastonbury debut on the West Holts Stage on Saturday night. Other names confirmed include Noah Kahan, Alanis Morissette, Gracie Abrams, Busta Rhymes, Lola Young, Brandi Carlile, Myles Smith, En Vogue, Amaarae, Cymande, Shaboozey, Osees and Gary Numan. Although the band took to a smaller stage than their headline set in 2022, the band admitted that they were delighted to go somewhat back to their roots. In a conversation with radio star Jo Whiley, Alana admitted: "We love The Park Stage. The Park Stage is our favourite. "[Be]cause that was like the first time we came to Glastonbury, we got to play The Park Stage. It felt like a movie." She continued: "It was like, 'What is going on? How did we get here?' And also just like… you never forget the first time you step onto the farm. "And it's the most insane feeling, I think, that you'll ever have. Beloved singer, 83, cancels concerts after suffering 'chronic and intense pain'
A beloved singer has been forced to cancel shows after facing 'unimaginable' pain that 'demanded immediate attention'. Paul Simon rose to fame in the 1960s as part of the duo Simon & Garfunkel alongside school friend Art Garkfunkel. After gaining a legion of fans releasing songs like The Sound of Silence and Bridge over Troubled Water, the American singer- songwriter went on to pursue a career as a solo artist in the 1970s. Throughout his career, Paul has won 16 Grammy Awards and been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, realising his most recent album Seven Psalms in 2023. In April he kicked off his A Quiet Celebration Tour, which began in New Orleans and will travel throughout North America and Canada before ending in Seattle in August. However, this weekend he had to pull the plug on two performances just a few hours in advance due to ongoing health issues. Posting a statement online, his team explained that the 83-year-old could no longer play his scheduled shows at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia. 'Paul has been struggling with chronic and intense back pain,' it began. 'Today it became unmanageable and demands immediate attention. Unfortunately, we have to cancel these shows at this time, as we don't have the ability to reschedule them.' 'However, we are hopeful after this minor surgical procedure which has been scheduled in the next few days, Paul will be able to complete the tour as well as look into returning to make up these dates. 'In the meantime, please go to your point of purchase or local ticket provider for a full refund.' Paul is next set to play at the Long Beach Performing Arts Center's Terrace Theater in Long Beach, California on July 7. His tour features the live debut of his Grammy-nominated album, Seven Psalms, along with a 'celebration of his timeless classics'. However when it was announced earlier this year, it was explained that he'd chosen 'intimate venues with optimal acoustics for this tour' as he had been dealing with 'severe hearing loss'. The musician had previously announced his retirement from touring in 2018 due to hearing loss. At the time he explained: 'I've often wondered what it would feel like to reach the point where I'd consider bringing my performing career to a natural end. Now I know it feels a little unsettling, a touch exhilarating and something of a relief. 'I love making music, my voice is still strong, and my band is a tight, extraordinary group of gifted musicians. I think about music constantly.' More Trending Last year he explained he's now lost 94% of hearing in his left ear and has been told by doctors that there is no cure, which has also left him unable to play certain songs from his catalogue, including his 1986 hit You Can Call Me Al. 'I'm going through my repertoire and reducing a lot of the choices that I make to acoustic versions,' he said on CBS Mornings. 'It's all much quieter. It's not You Can Call Me Al, that's gone.
