Pivetta wins 9th game in career year for Padres, Machado has 3 RBIs in 6-4 win over Phillies
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Manny Machado hit a three-run double and Nick Pivetta allowed one run and struck out six in seven innings to lead the San Diego Padres past the Philadelphia Phillies 6-4 in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday.
Pivetta (9-2) is off to the best start in his nine-year career, the first 3 1/2 spent with the Phillies. The 32-year-old entered nine games under .500 in his career and has never won more than 10 games. He went 6-12 in Boston last season but found success in San Diego and has kept the Padres in the thick of the NL wild-card race.
Perhaps the lone dose of bad news came Tuesday, when the game was rained out which forced the day-night doubleheader. Pivetta, whose 195 career starts are seventh-most by a Canadian, had his scheduled start on Canada Day postponed.
Kyle Schwarber took Pivetta deep in the sixth for his 26th homer, which made it 6-1.
Machado had already done the bulk of the damage in a five-run second inning against Phillies rookie starter Mick Abel (2-2). Abel had loaded the bases when he issued consecutive walks to Fernando Tatis Jr. and Jackson Merrill to make it 2-0. Machado followed with his 21st double of the season.
Abel, who struck out nine over six innings in his May big-league debut, walked five (four scored) and allowed five runs in 1 2/3 innings.
Luis Arraez walked with the bases loaded in the fourth to make it 6-1. Key moment
The Phillies scored twice in the seventh and added another run in the ninth to make it 6-4. Trea Turner ripped a two-out single to center but Brandon Marsh was ruled out on a head-first slide into third base. The call was overturned putting runners on first and third. Robert Suarez struck out Schwarber swinging to end the game and earn his 24th save in 27 chances. Key stat
San Diego scored three runs on bases-loaded walks. Up next
The Padres were sending RHP Dylan Cease (3-7, 4.53 ERA) to the mound in the second game against LHP Cristopher Sánchez (6-2, 2.79 ERA).

Kyle Schwarber will defer his Indiana University Hall of Fame selection because of attendance rule
Associated Press BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — All-Star Game MVP Kyle Schwarber is deferring his selection to Indiana University's Athletics Hall of Fame to a future year because of a rule requiring all living inductees to attend the ceremony. Indiana's induction is set for Sept. 5, a day Schwarber's Philadelphia Phillies visit the Miami Marlins as they attempt to win their second straight NL East title. Schwarber was selected in his first year of eligibility. Indiana's athletic department announced the selections on Thursday. Schwarber was one of the school's biggest baseball stars, leading the Hoosiers to two Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles while ranking among career leaders in hits (238), home turns (40), runs (182) and slugging percentage (.607) while batting .341. He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 2014, made his major league debut the following June and helped the Cubs win the World Series in 2016. This season, the 32-year-old Schwarber ranks among the major league leaders with 37 home runs. He hit home runs on all three of his swings in the first All-Star Game swing-off to give the National League a victory over the American League. The three-time All-Star has 321 home runs and 738 RBIs in 11 seasons with the Cubs, Washington Nationals, Boston Red Sox and Phillies. Schwarber was the headliner of Indiana's seven-member Hall of Fame class. The other selections are Cody Zeller, who has spent the last 11 seasons playing in the NBA, All-American rower Meradith Dickensheets, 2008 NCAA wrestling champion Angel Escobedo, former football star Mel Groomes, five-time track and field All-American Glenn Terry and Peggy Martin, a pioneering three-sport star in field hockey, women's basketball and softball from 1969-72. ___ AP MLB: recommended Item 1 of 3

Paris Saint-Germain fined for fans' misconduct and 'UEFA mafia' flag at Champions League final
NYON, Switzerland (AP) — Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain was fined almost 150,000 euros ($171,000) on Thursday for misconduct by fans at the final including taking pieces of turf and displaying a 'UEFA Mafia' banner. UEFA said its disciplinary panel judged six charges including 'transmitting message that is not fit for a sports event' and 'bringing UEFA into disrepute.' PSG won its first Champions League title with a 5-0 rout of Inter Milan on May 31 at Bayern Munich's stadium. UEFA announced the disciplinary sanctions with a fine of 10,000 euros ($11,500) for the offensive message. PSG fans showed a flag with the 'UEFA Mafia' slogan and a picture of a pig, even though its club's president Nasser al-Khelaifi is a member of the UEFA executive committee. Al-Khelaifi was elected to UEFA's decision-making body representing the European Club Association which he also leads. UEFA routinely prosecutes cases of fans using the 'mafia' slur, though Norwegian club Brann won an appeal ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport this year. Brann argued its fans' song had been satirical at a Women's Champions League game last year and a UEFA fine was overturned. The biggest financial penalty for PSG was 100,000 euros ($115,000) for the combined offenses of fans invading the field of play and lighting fireworks. After the game, fans went on the field and ripped up pieces of turf to take away. UEFA fined PSG an additional 8,000 euros ($9,160) for the charge of 'acts of damage.' A ban on PSG selling tickets to its fans for one away game in a UEFA competition was deferred for two years on probation. PSG earned about 140 million euros ($160 million) in Champions League prize money from UEFA last season. ___ AP soccer:
