Shohei Ohtani to hit leadoff for NL in All-Star Game, followed by Ronald Acuña Jr. of host Braves
Arizona second baseman Ketel Marte will hit third in the batting order announced Monday by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, followed by Los Angeles first baseman Freddie Freeman, San Diego third baseman Manny Machado, Dodgers catcher Will Smith, Chicago Cubs right fielder Kyle Tucker, New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor and Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong.
Pittsburgh right-hander Paul Skenes will start his second straight All-Star Game, Major League Baseball announced last week. Detroit left-hander Tarik Skubal will make his first All-Star start for the American League.
'I think when you're talking about the game, where it's at, these two guys … are guys that you can root for, are super talented, are going to be faces of this game for years to come,' Roberts said.
Detroit second baseman Gleyber Torres will lead off for the AL, followed by Tigers left fielder Riley Greene, New York Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge, Seattle catcher Cal Raleigh, Toronto first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr,. Baltimore designated hitter Ryan O'Hearn, Tampa Bay third baseman Junior Caminero, Tigers center fielder Javy Báez and Athletics shortstop Jacob Wilson.
Ohtani led off for the AL in the 2021 All-Star Game, when the two-way sensation also was the AL's starting pitcher. He hit leadoff in 2022, then was the No. 2 hitter hitter for the AL in 2023 and for the NL last year after leaving the Los Angeles Angels for the Dodgers.
Skenes and Skubal are 1-2 in average four-seam fastball velocity among those with 1,500 or more pitches this season, Skenes at 98.2 mph and Skubal at 97.6 mph, according to MLB Statcast.
A 23-year-old right-hander, Skenes is 4-8 despite a major league-best 2.01 ERA for the Pirates, who are last in the NL Central. The 2024 NL Rookie of the Year has 131 strikeouts and 30 walks in 131 innings.
Skubal, a 28-year-old left-hander, is the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner. He is 10-3 with a 2.23 ERA, striking out 153 and walking 16 in 121 innings.

Injury report update: Indiana Fever rule Caitlin Clark out vs Liberty
With tipoff approaching, the Indiana Fever have officially ruled star point guard Caitlin Clark out of Wednesday night's game against the New York Liberty from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn with a right groin injury. Clark was initially listed as questionable in the Fever's first injury report update on Wednesday. Including the WNBA Commissioner's Cup championship game, Clark is now set to miss her 11th contest this season. The 6-foot Fever guard missed five games from May 28-June 10 with a left quadriceps injury. Clark missed five more games with a left groin injury from June 26-July 5. Prior to her absences this season, Clark had played in 185 straight games across her college career at Iowa and the start of her WNBA career with the Fever. Clark missing Wednesday night's contest against the Liberty would seemingly put her status for WNBA All-Star Weekend in jeopardy. Clark is scheduled to take part in the WNBA 3-Point Contest on Friday at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis as part of All-Star Weekend. Clark is also one of the team captains for the WNBA All-Star Game on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. CT on ABC. Clark finished Tuesday night's win with 14 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and one steal on a 4-of-14 shooting effort, including 1-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc. Fever head coach Stephanie White commented on Clark's right groin injury after Indiana's 85-77 win over the Connecticut Sun on Tuesday evening. 'We just take it one step at a time,' White said. 'She's being evaluated. We'll see where we are with that. Certainly, we'll probably have another evaluation and conversation (Wednesday) and see where we are. This group has played without her. We have a tough opponent in New York. We have to get locked in and ready to compete.' Mariners Linked To Massive Trade For Diamondbacks' $10.9 Million Slugger
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Seattle Mariners desperately need to add some pop to their lineup despite the breakout year from Cal Raleigh. Raleigh has been one of the best players in baseball, but the Mariners need more production behind him in the lineup. One spot they could upgrade is first base. There likely won't be too many star options on the trade block, so the Mariners will need to be aggressive toward getting the guy they want. USA Today's Bob Nightengale recently linked the Mariners to a trade for Arizona Diamondbacks slugger Josh Naylor in the coming weeks. ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA - JULY 13: Josh Naylor #22 and Jake McCarthy #31 both scored on a double by Jose Herrera #11 of the Arizona Diamondbacks during the fourth inning against the Los Angeles Angels at... ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA - JULY 13: Josh Naylor #22 and Jake McCarthy #31 both scored on a double by Jose Herrera #11 of the Arizona Diamondbacks during the fourth inning against the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on July 13, 2025 in Anaheim, California. More Jayne Kamin-Oncea/Getty Images "They are making starters Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly, All-Star third baseman Eugenio Suárez, and first baseman Josh Naylor available. They are all free agents after the season. The D-backs are searching for young pitching in return," Nightengale wrote. "The Seattle Mariners, after Suárez to the Diamondbacks in November 2023, now would love to have him back in their lineup – and have interest in Naylor, too." Naylor would be a perfect upgrade for the Mariners. He would provide a lot of power and home run potential at a position of need for Seattle. To make matters even better for the Mariners, a trade likely wouldn't cost too much, considering his contract expires at the end of the season. There are bound to be a few teams interested in Naylor's services, but the Mariners could be the team that lands him. Seattle has the pitching staff to win a World Series. It also has superstar production from Raleigh. Now, the front office needs to make sure all the roster holes are patched so the team has a real chance to compete down the stretch. 49ers rookie QB officially placed on injured list ahead of training camp
The San Francisco 49ers welcomed their rookies to the SAP Performance Facility next to Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on Tuesday for the start of training camp, with veterans set to arrive exactly a week later. However, on Wednesday, the 49ers announced one player who won't participate in training camp yet, as they officially placed rookie quarterback Kurtis Rourke on the active/non-football injury list. Rourke, 24, began his collegiate career at Ohio, where he spent five seasons before transferring to Indiana for the 2024 season. In 36 games at Ohio, he completed 66.3% of his passes for 7,651 yards, 50 touchdowns and 16 interceptions while rushing for an additional 232 yards and 11 scores. In his lone season with the Hoosiers, he completed 69.4% of his passes for 3,042 yards, 29 touchdowns and five interceptions. Throughout his collegiate career, he earned MAC Most Valuable Player of the Year once (2022), All-MAC honors twice (2022-23) and All-Big Ten honors once (2024). The 49ers took Rourke in the seventh round (No. 227 overall) of the 2025 NFL draft, and the Saskatchewan Roughriders also selected him in the third round (No. 25 overall) of the 2025 CFL draft. Rourke is currently rehabbing from a torn ACL that he suffered (and played through) with Indiana. He had surgery for the injury back in January, so he's still rehabbing and has yet to be cleared for practice. For now, the 49ers will roll with the recently-extended Brock Purdy, the free-agent acquisition Mac Jones and 2024 undrafted free agent Tanner Mordecai at quarterback, and with no jobs truly open at the position, they could stick with that group. That is, unless they're just looking for a camp arm to throw to their offensive weapons. More 49ers: George Kittle may be in for another huge year thanks to 2 49ers free agent signings
