Live Aid founder's rallying call 40 years on from iconic concert
The pair, along with Live Aid performers U2's Bono, Queen's Brian May and Chrissie Hynde, will attend a matinee of Just For One Day: The Live Aid Musical at London's Shaftesbury Theatre. Midge, 71, said: 'It's a story that's as important now as it was 40 years ago. We're living in an incredibly uncertain, scary world.' He said it's nearly time for him and Bob to 'hand the baton to the next generation'.
Live Aid, described as the greatest show on Earth, and 1984's charity single Do They Know It's Christmas? were sparked by famine in Ethiopia, which claimed up to 1.2 million lives. Performances from some of the biggest names in music, including Queen, George Michael and David Bowie, were beamed around the world.
Midge still cannot believe what they achieved. 'It's a ridiculous story,' he smiled. 'If you sat down and wrote it as a Hollywood script, it wouldn't ring true. But it has been. You know, a couple of dodgy musicians get together, write a song, galvanise all these people who felt something, felt the need, the desire and the empathy to help someone else. It gave them a vehicle to kind of latch onto.
'This is a story about hope. We did do something quite incredible. We did change politics, we changed people's opinions, we changed laws. That's just incredible.'
He praised Bob's dogged attitude - and said 'the planet needs people like Bob'. 'Realistically, wouldn't it be lovely if we had more people who were as motivated as he is, as driven as he is, and as knowledgeable about the subject as he is?' he said.
'He hasn't stopped doing this. I was kind of unscathed coming out of Band Aid and Live Aid. I'm still a trustee, I'm still there, I'm still doing my bit. I was allowed to go back into being a musician. I was allowed to go back on tour. Bob was seen as a spokesman for youth, seen as a quasi politician. He was in the UN, he was lambasting Margaret Thatcher. We need people who just don't hear the word no, can't, won't, shouldn't, couldn't.'
Continuing their fundraising work through the musical Just For One Day, Midge said he never dreamed it would get to this point. 'We'd never anticipated that something like this could happen,' said Midge. 'But this will get across to an audience that wouldn't, wouldn't normally go to rock concerts or engage. So maybe young people will walk out of this and go, 'You know, I can do something. It's not impossible.'' Issuing a rallying call to the next generation, he said: 'It's up to you now."

Royal author shares the TV moment that revealed Prince Harry's 'lack of self-awareness': How King Charles was apparently left 'at a loss' after Harry's dreadfully out-of-touch comment during interview
Prince Harry has long been criticised for being out of touch and lacking self-awareness, particularly through making explosive claims about the Royal Family at every opportunity he gets. He once came under fire for encouraging people to leave their jobs so they could have a 'mental health awakening', just as he did when he stepped down from the Royal Family to live in a £10million Montecito mansion with Meghan Markle. His reasons for leaving the Firm left little room for public sympathy as he claimed to have been financially cut off from them, despite inheriting millions from the late Princess Diana and a family trust fund set up by the Queen Mother. Surely, decades of media training and hiring an expensive PR team would protect Harry from these royal blunders. But the prince made headlines once again in April 2022 for a confusing and contradictory claim he made during an interview for the postponed 2020 Invictus Games in The Hague. The interview came just a year after Harry made his first trip back to Britain since the previous summer. Meghan and Harry stopped by Windsor Castle to visit the Queen on their way to the Netherlands. Harry reportedly also had a 'cordial but slightly awkward' meeting with his father, Prince Charles, which lasted 15 minutes. Asked by Today host Hoda Kotb how the Queen was doing after the prince's quick stop-off in the UK, he replied: 'Being with her, it was great. While Harry did not elaborate on what he meant, his comments came just over a year after the Sussexes' explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey. At one point during that interview, Harry alleged that the Queen was badly advised by those around her. 'When you're head of the Firm there are people around you that give you advice. 'Other gaffes based on a kind of breathtaking naivety include the couple's complete failure to realise that you cannot make speeches about the world needing to do something about global warming and then flying by private jet, as Meghan did when she flew from Toronto to Jamaica for the wedding of one of Harry's Old Etonian chums.' Between Megxit, Spare, his explosive Oprah interview and lost security appeal, it seems Harry has not only lost the favour of his family, but also the public. Since stepping down as senior royals, the opinion polls have shown a steep decline in Harry and Meghan's popularity with members of the public. A YouGov poll in May 2025 showed only 27 per cent of the public held a positive view of Harry, with just 20 per cent of people having a positive view of Meghan. This is in comparison to November 2017 when 81 per cent of Britons told the polls they had a positive view of Harry and almost half liked Meghan. In recent months, Harry has made headlines after the Mail revealed his unsuccessful security appeal over his level of protection when visiting the UK cost British taxpayers £100,000. Harry's relationship with the Crown is aptly summarised by royal biographer Ingrid Seward, who has spent the last 40 years following the Firm. She wrote in her book My Mother And I: 'He chooses to be the victim and wreak vengeance on the slights he thought he had suffered; on his family, on the press and through the courts.' Within hours of the Appeal Court judgment, Harry declared in his bombshell interview: 'This is a good old-fashioned Establishment stitch-up - and that is what it feels like'. Hopes of a reconciliation between the family are slim with Harry claiming that his father, King Charles, will not speak with him. In the meantime, some observers fear that Harry's court battle will spearhead the publication of a sequel to his explosive memoir, Spare, and most suggest this would open fresh tensions between the feuding prince and his family. Camilla smitten with Battersea puppy as she opens dog-friendly garden
The Queen was left smitten with a tiny puppy when she opened a dog-friendly garden at a leading animal sanctuary. Camilla declared 'I'd have taken him' when told the once homeless tiny Jack Russell cross had found an owner during a visit to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home. The Queen officially launched the garden, co-designed for dogs by TV gardener and author Monty Don, at the charity in south London after it was first unveiled at the Chelsea Flower Show before moving to its new site. She told guests who included celebrity supporters Amanda Holden, Sue Perkins, David Gandy and Dame Jacqueline Wilson she had followed the garden's progress. She said: 'I feel like I've watched it grow up. 'I saw it at the planning stage, I saw it at Chelsea, and I've seen it here, where it's going to be so wonderful for all the dogs to roam around.' Camilla has taken in three rescue dogs from the famous animal sanctuary over the years, with her latest pet called Moley, but she said the animal was left at home because of the hot weather. When the Queen first arrived, she was greeted by some of Battersea's more cuddly resident dogs, including seven-week-old Dipsy who she tickled behind the ear. When told by Nake Florin, the charity's behaviour manager responsible for animal wellbeing who held the diminutive puppy in one hand, the dog had been adopted by one of the charity's staff she made the group laugh with her comment about missing out on the dog. Broadcaster Holden later said she made Camilla laugh when she told her about her husband's response to their rescue dog Mini rolling onto its back for its stomach to be tickled whenever he sees the pet. The TV presenter, a Battersea ambassador for 12 years, said of her partner: 'My husband said why can't you be more like that.' She said about the Queen: 'She's just one of those people that's genuinely nuts about dogs.' During the visit Camilla toured the dog-friendly garden, which features a lawn, trees and shrubs, and saw one of the pets jump into a small pond and run about the borders. Don said later: 'It wasn't about relocating a Chelsea garden, Chelsea was a stage of the journey to here and I quite like the fact it's changed. 'We haven't just plonked down a Chelsea garden, we've changed the site and made it work for the dogs. 'We wanted the dogs to run and leap and jump and roll and sniff, whereas at the Chelsea garden it was too precious.'
