Original Tesla Cofounder Roasts Cybertruck for Looking "Like a Dumpster"
Martin Eberhard, one of the original cofounders of Tesla — who actually started the company and didn't retroactively bestow himself a title giving that impression, unlike a certain billionaire — isn't too pleased with his baby's newest crowning jewel: the Cybertruck. In comments made in a recent interview with YouTuber Kim Java spotted by Electrek, Eberhard vented his frustration with Tesla's recent direction — which is when the highly heterodox pickup truck caught a stray. "I am actually disappointed that Tesla canceled its low-end car program," he said in the interview. "Because that's what the world needs — not a truck that looks like a dumpster." Eberhard cofounded Tesla with Marc Tarpenning in 2003. Musk joined the next year after investing $6.5 million in the startup, and became chairman of the board. They were hardly ever on good terms. The first major blow was dealt by Musk, who sacked Eberhard as CEO in 2007, eventually stepping into the role himself. Eberhard clapped back by suing Musk in 2009 for libel and defamation, and later settled out of court. As part of that settlement, Musk was allowed to call himself a cofounder of Tesla. There's still bad blood between the two, and Eberhard has occasionally been publicly critical of Musk. In 2023, for example, Eberhard took a dig at Musk's alleged hot temper and hair-trigger firings. "I'm a believer of treating employees with respect, and I'm not into random firings and things like that," Eberhard said in an interview with Business Insider, ruminating about how he would run things instead. "So maybe the culture inside the company would have been a little bit nicer." His latest criticism is one echoed by many of Tesla's investors and even its fans: that it's sat on its promise of delivering an affordable, $25,000 EV. Proponents argue this would unlock millions of more customers that were reluctant to buy EVs due to their price and rescue the company's faltering sales. Recent comments from Musk, however, have all but confirmed reports that Tesla is abandoning the idea, despite teasing it for years. And in retrospect, the Cybertruck should've been a clear death knell. It's in every respect a giant F-U to sensible, frugal-minded buyers. It's large, heavy, expensive to maintain, and infamously unreliable. When it launched, it cost an eye-watering $100,000, and cheaper versions that have since been released are still well within the luxury SUV price range with the tradeoff of being a downgrade in every way possible. And with its staggeringly poor sales, which in the second quarter collapsed by more than 50 percent from the year before, Eberhard may be getting the last laugh. Tesla hit with stunning report on Cybertruck sales trends: 'Frankly I'm surprised that they sold any of them'
One of Tesla's most-hyped vehicles has fallen sharply in popularity, new sales numbers reveal. What's happening? Kelley Blue Book data shows that, in the second quarter, Tesla sold 4,306 Cybertrucks. That's a drop of more than 50% from the second quarter last year, Gizmodo reports. The all-electric truck garnered headlines when it was first announced in 2019, largely because of its monochromatic, straight-lined, futuristic look. "I simply can't imagine that there's 4,305 people out there that went, 'Nup, the Cybertruck over any other vehicle possible is the one for me!'" The truck was delayed many times before launching in late 2023, but Tesla CEO Elon Musk hyped it repeatedly. He called it a "better truck than an F150, faster than a Porsche 911" and "one of those special products that comes along only once in a long while." He also suggested that Tesla's Texas Gigafactory could one day help produce up to 250,000 Cybertrucks each year. But demand, it seems, is nowhere near that, as Tesla just sold its fewest Cybertrucks in a quarter since their first full quarter on the market. Why are Cybertruck sales important? Tesla has long been on the leading edge of electric vehicles and has become one of the most well-known brands in the world. But 2025 has been a difficult one for the company, a trend continued by the latest Cybertruck numbers. The Kelley Blue Book data showed that Tesla's total second-quarter sales were down 12.6% from the same period in 2024. That came on the heels of disappointing first-quarter sales and other troubling news for the company, such as the Model Y's being dethroned by the Toyota RAV4 as the world's best-selling car. As a whole, EV sales fell 6.3% in the second quarter as compared to Q2 2024, according to KBB. What can I do about this? For the planet, fewer EVs being sold is distressing news. Electric vehicles create no tailpipe emissions, and even when accounting for the pollution caused by mining for battery materials and producing the cars, they are still considerably cleaner than their gas-powered counterparts. Lamborghini's First Personalized Temerario Glows in Grey and Blue
Lamborghini's shift toward electrified supercars continues with the introduction of the Temerario, the Italian marque's all-new plug-in hybrid coupe. The model represents the brand's departure from the Huracán and its long-serving V10 engine, which has been replaced by a more potent and efficient twin-turbo V8 hybrid setup. With the Temerario, Lamborghini completes its transition to a fully electrified product line alongside the Revuelto and the Urus SE. The latest development comes in the form of the first Temerario Ad Personam – a fully customized one-off model created by Lamborghini's personalization division. Revealed in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, during a private gathering, the build draws inspiration from the Mediterranean backdrop and introduces a tailored visual expression of the new hybrid Lamborghini. Dubbed the Temerario Porto Cervo, this one-off example is defined by a finish called Grigio Serget – a grey base that reveals embedded blue flakes under direct light. Gloss black elements in Nero Noctis outline the lower body, front splitter, rear diffuser, and side scoops. A slim pinstripe in Blu Royal provides a color break across the body, also found on the rear wing. Blue brake calipers hide behind Velador gloss black wheels, and matte black quad tailpipes add contrast at the rear. Inside, the blue-grey theme continues. Grigio Octans leather and Corsa Tex upholstery form the base of the cabin, while Blu Nethuns stitching and leather inserts appear across seat panels and door trims. Embroidery includes Lamborghini logos and a Temerario script with Tricolore detail along the cabin's rear wall. A profile of the car is stitched into the doors, while matte carbon trim and a red-detailed carbon steering wheel reinforce the supercar's driver-oriented purpose. Two plaques mark this unit's uniqueness: one reads Ad Personam on the driver-side B-pillar, the other tagged "Porto Cervo 2025" – to be replaced by the owner's custom plate before delivery. The Temerario is powered by an all-new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine paired with three electric motors. The gasoline engine alone delivers 789 hp with a 10,000 rpm redline. With hybrid assistance, total output reaches 907 hp. Power is routed to all four wheels via an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic. Lamborghini claims 0–100 km/h in 2.7 seconds and a top speed of 213 mph. The Temerario Porto Cervo is a one-off commission, though Lamborghini's Ad Personam program allows buyers to create similarly bespoke configurations. The standard model's MSRP hovers around $300,000.
