Husband arrested for stabbing Kannada TV actress Shruthi days after she returned to live with him

Indian Express12-07-2025
The Bengaluru police have arrested the husband of Kannada TV actress and anchor Shruthi for allegedly stabbing her at their home in Hanumanthanagar on July 4 just three days after she had returned with her two daughters, having lived separately for months over a matrimonial dispute.
Shruthi, 38, whose real name is Manjula C, was allegedly attacked with pepper spray and stabbed multiple times by Amaresh H S who was arrested last week on the basis of the actress's complaint to the police from her hospital bed.
The accused, who was booked under section 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, moved a sessions court for bail on Tuesday, and on Friday the court posted the matter for orders on July 16.
Shruthi is known for her role in the popular Kannada series 'Amruthadhare' on a private channel and as an anchor on television shows.
According to the police complaint, she had married Amaresh 20 years ago but the marriage soured and the couple lived separately on account of his violent behaviour.
The complaint stated that Amaresh began troubling Shruthi over financial and family issues around five years after their marriage. In April this year, she reportedly moved to her brother's house after filing a police complaint over Amaresh's harassment.
'When she was staying with her brother, Amaresh would frequently call her and demand money for lease payment and jewellery. He also threatened to kill her,' as per the First Information Report (FIR).
Three days before she was stabbed, Amaresh reportedly convinced Shruthi's brother to send her back to his house by promising to look after her and the children. Based on the assurances, the actress said she returned to his house along with the children.
According to the police, on July 4, her children went to college and the husband also left home in the morning. Amaresh, however, returned at noon and when she opened the door, he allegedly attacked her with the pepper spray before stabbing her multiple times as she tried to fight back and escape.
The actress was rescued by neighbours and others who heard her screams and intervened. She was subsequently admitted to Victoria Hospital for treatment.

Court orders probe into custodial irregularities by police in celebratory firing case

1 2 Panchkula: In a case involving celebratory firing and alleged custodial misconduct, the sub-divisional judicial magistrate (SDJM) of Kalka, Abhimanyu Rajput, has directed the police commissioner to initiate a departmental inquiry and submit an action-taken report. The court's intervention follows serious procedural lapses in the investigation and treatment of the accused. The case surfaced after a video circulated on social media showed 18-year-old Parvesh Sharma allegedly firing a weapon during panchayat election celebrations on the night of June 16-17. He was booked under Section 288 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and Section 25(9) of the Arms Act, 1959, and later granted bail. His co-accused, Neeraj, was arrested with a country-made .12-bore "katta," prompting the addition of more serious charges. However, during the July 18 hearing, the court found that the investigating officer failed to justify the application of Section 27(2) of the Arms Act, which pertains to prohibited arms. Neither the IO nor the SHO could confirm whether the weapon was automatic or military-grade. Further, Neeraj was not lodged in Central Jail, Ambala, as directed, and alleged custodial assault. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo He was presented in court without a medical exam, and a medico-legal report was only prepared after judicial intervention. The court granted him interim bail on a ₹20,000 personal bond and ordered preservation of CCTV footage from July 15 to 17. In a related development, Parvesh's counsel, Deepanshu Bansal, revealed that his client suffered four injuries in custody and was re-arrested despite bail. The court termed the arrest illegal and ordered a fresh medical examination. The court has also directed that allegations of custodial torture be reported to the sessions judge, in line with a 2019 Punjab and Haryana High Court directive. BOX: Injuries to the accused Quoting the court-ordered medical report, Deepanshu Bansal, counsel for Parvesh (18), stated that he suffered four injuries in custody. He was re-arrested even after being granted bail. Police said that he was arrested in the same case after some other sections were added. Terming it as an illegal arrest, he was again granted bail, and Panchkula chief medical officer was asked to conduct a medical examination. MSID:: 122783825 413 |

Karnataka Forms SIT To Probe Murders, Sexual Assaults, Missing Women Cases In Dharmasthala

Last Updated: The four-member special investigation team will be headed by Karnataka DGP, internal security division, Pranav Mohanty Responding to concerns over media reports of mass burials, the Siddaramaiah-led government in Karnataka has formed a special investigation team to probe the alleged incidents of murder, rape, and cases of missing women spanning two decades in the Dharmasthala area. A government order (GO) dated July 19 was shared with the press on Sunday. The police have already registered a case under Section 211(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in Dharmasthala. The matter came to light after the discovery of a human skull and statements made by the family of a missing medical student. An individual, a former sanitation worker at the Dharmasthala temple, also came forward claiming that there were 'hundreds of bodies were buried in the Dharmasthala area". 'The government has constituted an SIT to look into the Dharmasthala issues. There has been a complaint. There has been a public hue and cry. The government has taken note of all this and then constituted an SIT to look into this entire thing… If somebody is thinking of creating some political issue out of this at this point of time, I don't want to react to all that," state minister G Parameshwara told news agency ANI. The special investigation team (SIT) will be headed by Karnataka director general of police (DGP), internal security division, Pranav Mohanty. Other members include additional commissioner of police (recruitment) MN Anucheth, deputy commissioner of police (CAR headquarters) Soumya Latha, and superintendent of police (internal security division) Jitendra Kumar Dayama. The SIT will investigate not only the present case but also all related cases registered or to be registered in other police stations across the state. The DGP will assign such cases to the SIT and provide necessary personnel. The SIT will function using resources from the Dakshina Kannada district police office and is expected to submit regular updates to the DGP. A comprehensive investigation report will be submitted to the state government through the DGP at the earliest. WHAT IS THE MASS BURIALS CASE? The state government's move has come in response to a letter from the Karnataka State Women's Commission chairperson Nagalakshmi Choudhary, who cited a court statement by an individual claiming that 'hundreds of bodies were buried in the Dharmasthala area". The commission also took serious note of media reports highlighting the discovery of a human skull and statements made by the family of a missing medical student. It said these reports — alongside the court testimony — point to a 'disturbing pattern of abuse, unnatural deaths, and disappearances of women and female students spanning more than 20 years". The police complaint was filed alleging the secret disposal of multiple bodies in a village in the Dakshina Kannada district. The complainant has claimed that he was involved in disposing of several bodies under threat. His identity has been kept confidential for security reasons. Driven by guilt, he approached the police with a request for protection and expressed willingness to fully cooperate with the investigation, on the condition that legal protection is granted to him and his family. The complainant has offered to share detailed information about those involved and the specific locations where the bodies were disposed of once safety assurances are in place. On July 12, in a key development, the complainant's statement was recorded by the principal civil judge and JMFC of Belthangady Taluk, Dakshina Kannada. The statement was taken under Section 183 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS), which corresponds to Section 164 of the former Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC). Rapido Directors Booked For Allegedly Providing Illegal Bike Taxi Services In Mumbai

Last Updated: The Mumbai Police have filed second FIR against Rapido for allegedly providing illegal bike taxi services. The complaint was lodged by RTO inspector Harshal Sose. The Mumbai Police have registered an FIR against directors of ride hailing app Rapido for allegedly operating illegal bike taxi services in the city. This is the second FIR registered against the bike taxi aggregator. Earlier in June, a case against Rapido was registered at Azad Maidan Police Station on similar lines. The latest case was registered after six regional transport office (RTO) officers in the city booked bike taxis on Rapido recently, after learning that the company was offering the service illegally. The case against Rapido directors has been registered under sections 223 (disobedience of lawful orders issued by public servants) and 318 (cheating) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. It is learnt that the FIR was registered on the basis of a complaint lodged by Harshal Sose, an inspector at the Mumbai West RTO in Andheri. Earlier, Maharashtra transport commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar had directed RTOs to crack down on bike taxis across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) as companies such as Rapido, Ola and Uber were ferrying passengers without obtaining mandatory permits. These guidelines were recommended by a state-appointed committee to curb the unsafe practice of pooling non-transport vehicles for commercial purposes. However, platforms like Rapido and Uber have allegedly continued to operate bike taxis without permits. According to officials, Rapido was served a notice on April 29 to immediately cease illegal operations. But the company allegedly did not comply. Earlier this month, acting on an order from the transport commissioner, senior RTO officials instructed their staff to book rides using bike taxis and verify compliance. On July 16, six officers from the Andheri RTO did just that and found that Rapido bike taxis were still operating in violation of the rules. Following this, a case was registered against Rapido's directors at Amboli police station. view comments First Published: July 20, 2025, 13:18 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
