Red Sox, Cubs hope to carry momentum into second half of season
A pair of teams eager to resume play will kick off the second half of the regular season on Friday afternoon, when the Chicago Cubs host the Boston Red Sox.
Chicago is on pace to finish with its most wins since its 2016 World Series championship season (103) and return to postseason play for the first time since 2020. The Cubs won eight of 12 games entering the All-Star break and sit a half-game back of the Los Angeles Dodgers for the National League's best record.
With a pair of 25-homer sluggers in Pete Crow-Armstrong and Seiya Suzuki spearheading the powerful lineup, the Cubs appear to be on track for a special end to the summer.
'Our job is to just keep winning. It's as simple as that,' Cubs manager Craig Counsell said. 'There's so much season left. Just keep winning. Stack up wins and we're going to be in a good position.'
After a six-game road trip capped the first half of the season, Chicago returns to Wrigley Field on Friday, where the club has gone 30-16.
Veteran right-hander Colin Rea (7-3, 3.91 ERA) gets the start and will look to extend his personal winning streak to four games. Since his last loss against the Seattle Mariners on June 22, Rea has allowed just four runs in 18 2/3 innings. The 35-year-old surrendered one run in seven innings last time out in an 8-1 victory over the host Minnesota Twins.
In his only career start against Boston, Rea gave up two runs in 5 2/3 innings in a 6-3 victory as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers in May 2024.
Nobody in baseball entered the break as hot as the Boston Red Sox, who have won 10 straight games and catapulted themselves into the American League postseason picture.
Following a July 2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds, Boston swept the Washington Nationals, Colorado Rockies and the Tampa Bay Rays to pull within three games of the AL East-leading Toronto Blue Jays and just a game back of the second-place New York Yankees. A win on Friday would match the ninth-longest winning streak in franchise history, which was last accomplished in September 2016.
'We've still got a long way to go,' Boston manager Alex Cora said. 'We're happy with this stretch, we're happy with how we've been playing. I think we've only had one bad series the last few weeks, so we're playing well.'
Lucas Giolito (6-1, 3.36) will make his 14th start of the season for the Red Sox on Friday. Like his counterpart in Rea, Giolito has won three consecutive starts. Since allowing seven runs in less than two innings against the Los Angeles Angels on June 4, Giolito has gone 5-0 with a 0.70 ERA and 37 strikeouts in six starts.
The 31-year-old right-hander will hope to fare better against the Cubs, as he's 2-3 with a 7.86 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 26 1/3 innings over five career starts against the club.

Eli Willits, 17, tabbed first by Nats; two college pitchers follow in MLB draft
(Photo credit: Brett Davis-Imagn Images) ATLANTA -- Fresh off an organizational switch-up, the Washington Nationals made a surprise selection with the first pick of the MLB Draft on Sunday, selecting 17-year-old shortstop Eli Willits. A week after general manager Mike Rizzo and manager Dave Martinez were fired amidst the franchise's sixth straight losing season, the team hopes Willits -- a Fort Cobb, Oklahoma native -- can spark a return to glory for the 2019 World Series champs. With most pundits predicting LSU pitcher Kade Anderson or high school shortstop Ethan Holliday to be the first choice, the Nationals went a different route with Willits. As a senior in 2025, Willits hit .516 with nine home runs, 33 runs, RBIs and 48 stolen bases. Originally a member of the 2026 class, Willits reclassified and was committed to the University of Oklahoma. After last year's draft didn't see a high school player selected until ninth (Konnor Griffin to the Pirates), the Nationals made Willits the youngest top overall pick in draft history at 17 years and seven months old. 'I'm just a player that's going to go out there and give everything I've got, just like everyone else,' Willits said from home after being selected. 'I feel like I have a good hit ability and am going to take that to the next level. I feel like my power is up and coming, but I needed to get into an organization like the Nationals, who can develop that and take me to the next level.' Willits was the Nationals' first top pick since 2010, when they drafted Bryce Harper. 'We couldn't be more excited,' Nationals interim general manager Mike DeBartolo said. 'Eli is a special player. The 6-foot-2 Madisonville, La., native missed his entire freshman season in 2023 while recovering from Tommy John Surgery. Anderson then compiled a 16-3 record in 37 outings (28 starts) over his two college seasons. He was a First-Team All-American and Baseball America's National Pitcher of the year this season. Holliday went fourth to the Colorado Rockies, 27 years after the franchise selected his father Matt in the seventh round in 1998. The elder Holliday hit 130 of his 316 career home runs with the Rockies from 2004-08 before returning to Denver for his final season in 2018. Ethan, younger brother of Jackson -- the first overall pick by the Baltimore Orioles in 2022 -- was Baseball America's 2025 High School Player of the Year at Stillwater High School, where he posted a .611 batting average with 19 home runs and 64 runs batted in (RBIs) in 33 games. Left-handed pitcher Liam Doyle out of the University of Tennessee was picked fifth by the St. Louis Cardinals, followed by the third high school player to be selected in Seth Hernandez (Corona HS in Calif.), a right-handed pitcher. Kelsey Mitchell, Fever pull out win over Dream despite Jordin Canada's 30

Aliyah Boston added 19 points, eight assists and six rebounds for Indiana (10-10) before fouling out, while Sophie Cunningham came off the bench for 16 points and 10 boards. Caitlin Clark contributed 12 points and nine assists. Jordin Canada starred in defeat for Atlanta (12-8), scoring a career-high 30 points and dishing out eight assists. Rhyne Howard added 14 points despite missing most of the second quarter with a knee injury and Brittney Griner chipped in 10 to go along with eight rebounds. The Fever blew it open in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Dream 30-17 and leading by as many as 20 points in the last minute. After hitting only 30.9 percent from the field Wednesday in an 80-61 home loss to Golden State, Indiana canned 11 of 30 3-pointers and finished Friday night at 46.1 percent from the floor. Atlanta was 11 of 29 on 3-pointers and ended the game at 44.8 percent from the field. Forward Brionna Jones, who averages 14 points per game, managed just six in 24 minutes before fouling out. In the fourth and final regular-season meeting of the teams, Atlanta ripped off 10 straight points in 71 seconds early in the first quarter for a 12-4 lead as Canada hit a 3-pointer and set up Howard for a 3-pointer. That was the beginning of an explosion few would have predicted. In a matchup that featured eight All-Stars at one point in their careers, it was Canada, who's not been an All-Star, who went off for 26 first half points. Her sixth 3-pointer enabled the Dream to take a 45-40 edge to the break. Indiana fought back in the third quarter, ringing up 29 points as Mitchell sparked the rally with a three-point play, three flagrant foul shots and a long 2-pointer. That enabled the Fever to take a 70-65 advantage to the final 10 minutes.
