Mosul's Riverfront Redevelopment Preserves Historical Heritage

By John Lee. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani conducted a field visit on Wednesday to inspect the ongoing redevelopment of the historic riverfront in the old city of Mosul. Highlighting the symbolic and cultural importance of the area, which includes numerous religious and archaeological landmarks, the Prime Minister affirmed that the reconstruction is being carried out in coordination with relevant ministries and the local government. The project was designed by a Spanish firm and is being implemented according to heritage-focused standards, in partnership with UNESCO. He stressed the need to preserve the city's historical legacy, calling it a heritage of value not just to Iraq but to the entire world, while ensuring that the character and identity of the site are maintained during reconstruction. Launched earlier this year, the project covers the riverfront area between Mosul's old and fifth bridges, and includes the creation of a riverside promenade, a boat dock, 273 traditional-style homes, and recreational parks, along with comprehensive infrastructure services for water, sewage, electricity, and telecommunications. PFLP-Affiliated Designated Terror Organization Samidoun Hosts Top Hamas Official Basem Naim In International Online Seminar Attended By Western Student Activists; Naim: Supporting Palestinian Resistan

On June 9, 2025, the website of the Samidoun Prisoner Solidarity Network, which is Designated a terrorist by the U.S., Canada, and other countries, published a summary of its online "international seminar" with Hamas Political Bureau official Basem Naim.[1] The event was attended by "Tariq el-Tahrir Student and Youth Network, activists from the Palestinian Women's Movement – Alkarama, representatives of the Anti-Imperialist Front, trade unionists and political activists from the Masar Badil: Palestinian Alternative Revolutionary Path Movement, as well as activists from over 24 countries across Europe, North and South America, and the Arab region and beyond."[2] During the seminar, Naim delivered a speech that was translated live into English and Spanish, calling for international support for the Palestinian resistance, saying: "The battle in Gaza is not only a Palestinian one, but an international battle against colonialism, fascism, and ethnic cleansing. [...] The trench of resistance is the trench of humanity confronting the Zionist racist project."[3] For more about Basem Naim, see MEMRI TV clip 11894. The International Coordinator of Samidoun, Charlotte Kates, also spoke at the online event. Kates is married to Khaled Barakat, who has been identified by the U.S. government as a senior member of the PFLP. He is also designated terrorist by the U.S. and Canada. This is not the first time Samidoun has lent its international platform to Hamas propaganda targeting international youth. In June 2024, Samidoun livestreamed an interview with Hamas Political Bureau member Ghazi Hamad, and in May 2024, a livestream interview with Hamas Spokesman Osama Hamdan.[4] Also in May, 2024, Samidoun played a specially recorded message from Basem Naim addressing a "Resistance Festival" in Brussels. The Samidoun article concluded its description of the event by saying the seminar is part of its "series of international initiatives" aimed at "reinforcing the connection between the Palestinian struggle and revolutionary movements in the region and around the world." It added that "broad participation [in these initiatives] reflects the growing international solidarity front with the resistance and the battle for liberation and return."[5] The Samidoun article describing the online seminar with Hamas official Basem Naim Samidoun's X post linking to its article about the event with Hamas official Basem Naim[6]

Iraq's Integrity Commission calls for high-level committee to monitor delayed Baghdad mega-projects

Baghdad ( – Iraq's Federal Commission of Integrity has called for the formation of a high-level committee to monitor and set timelines for three strategic mega-projects in Baghdad, citing significant delays in their implementation. In a report submitted to the Prime Minister's Office and several ministries, the anti-corruption body stated on Monday that its teams found no actual implementation work has begun on the Baghdad Metro or the city's new digital master plan. It also noted that the New Sadr City project has not been completed due to unfinished procedures. The report highlighted that the Baghdad Metro project remains under study and has not been awarded to an investor, despite funds being allocated for studies and design in previous budgets. Regarding the New Sadr City project, which aims to provide 11,000 housing units and has been awarded to a state-owned Chinese company, the commission urged its swift completion. The Integrity Commission stressed that a lack of effective coordination between ministries is hindering progress. It recommended forming a high-level committee to oversee these projects, establish clear timelines, and address obstacles to ensure their successful and timely execution.
