A two-star Michelin restaurant in Seoul's Gangnam district is under investigation for serving dishes topped with ants, violating South Korea's Food Sanitation Act. According to The Korea Times, the restaurant served a sorbet dish topped with ants, a signature offering at the fine dining venue known for its innovative Korean cuisine. The restaurant allegedly imported dried ants from the US and Thailand and used them as a garnish in around 12,000 dishes, generating approximately 120 million won ($87,400) in revenue from April 2021 to January 2025.
While South Korea permits certain insects like locusts, grasshoppers, and mealworms as food, and silkworm pupae (beondegi) is a common street food, ants are not approved as an edible ingredient.
"To use ants as food, businesses must obtain temporary approval for standards and specifications under food safety regulations. We have shared the results of this investigation with the relevant local government and requested administrative action," a ministry official said.
The South Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety launched an investigation into a restaurant after discovering social media and blog posts featuring the dish. The ant-topped dish has gained popularity among customers, with many describing it as an "upgraded experience". The restaurant's owner claims they were unaware that ants are not legally recognised as a food ingredient in South Korea.
The restaurant allegedly imported two types of ants from the US and Thailand via express mail between April 2021 and November 2024.
In various parts of the world, insects are valued as a nutritious and sustainable food source. For example, in Thailand, fried insects like crickets, ant eggs, grasshoppers, and termites are popular street foods. Similarly, in Mexico, chapulines (grasshoppers) and escamoles (ant larvae) are commonly used in tacos and sauces.
South Korea first approved insects as a food source in 2015. By 2021, the country's insect-farming industry had generated an estimated 44.6 billion won ($32.5 million) in sales. Other countries, including the European Union, Singapore, have also approved certain insect species for consumption.

The European Commission set out guidelines on Friday to help AI models it has determined have systemic risks and face tougher obligations to mitigate potential threats comply with European Union artificial intelligence regulation (AI Act). The move aims to counter criticism from some companies about the AI Act and the regulatory burden while providing more clarity to businesses which face fines ranging from 7.5 million euros ($8.7 million) or 1.5% of turnover to 35 million euros or 7% of global turnover for violations. The AI Act, which became law last year, will apply on Aug. 2 for AI models with systemic risks and foundation models such as those made by Google, OpenAI, Meta Platforms, Anthropic and Mistral. Companies have until August 2 next year to comply with the legislation. The Commission defines AI models with systemic risk as those with very advanced computing capabilities that could have a significant impact on public health, safety, fundamental rights or society. The first group of models will have to carry out model evaluations, assess and mitigate risks, conduct adversarial testing, report serious incidents to the Commission and ensure adequate cybersecurity protection against theft and misuse. General-purpose AI (GPAI) or foundation models will be subject to transparency requirements such as drawing up technical documentation, adopt copyright policies and provide detailed summaries about the content used for algorithm training. "With today's guidelines, the Commission supports the smooth and effective application of the AI Act," EU tech chief Henna Virkkunen said in a statement.

India-EU FTA talks: Why resolving differences in services is a significant step forward

In the 12th round of negotiations that concluded earlier this month, India and the European Union managed to close the digital trade chapter 'in principle' and made substantial progress on the text dealing with 'services and investment', marking a significant step forward in concluding the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that both sides aim to sign by the end of this year. The digital trade chapter of the FTA discussions covers crucial segments such as cross-border data flows, where trade partners decide on commitments to regulate movement of data across borders, which is important for e-commerce and global services. To be sure, the textual positions taken by both sides have not yet been made public. However, bridging the regulatory gap in services between India and the EU would open the door for the Indian services sector to integrate more deeply, scale up, and attract greater investment. This is important since the EU is the largest investor globally, and services represent over 70 per cent of the EU's foreign direct investment (FDI) abroad. According to a 2021 European Parliament report, the EU aimed to remove all 'discriminatory and disproportionate obstacles to establishment in both the services sector, as well as to the supply of cross-border services, in order to ensure a level playing field between EU and Indian service providers'. India has a fast growing IT and financial service sectors that has acted as a cushion for the economy as goods trade remained modest compared to the size of the economy. Regulations on cross-border data flows are among the most contentious topics in trade agreements with the Western countries, especially with the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). Effective AI systems — seen as the cornerstone of the Fourth Industrial Revolution — require diverse datasets from multiple countries. This has sparked a fierce race for data among Silicon Valley firms. India has traditionally resisted altering its stance on data localisation under any plurilateral agreements at the World Trade Organization (WTO) to preserve policy space. It has also tightened norms, notably in April 2018, when the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) made it mandatory for payment system providers such as Mastercard and Visa to store payment data of Indian residents within the country. A 2018 UNCTAD report, Power, Platforms, and the Free Trade Delusion, highlighted the importance of data for innovation. It noted that control over data creates 'market power and barriers to entry for new players'. The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) also highlighted the potential benefits of data localisation, including encouragement to foreign investment in domestic digital infrastructure, enabling enforcement of national laws, as well as safeguarding privacy and cyber sovereignty. Countries such as Vietnam and the Philippines have implemented such measures to promote local capabilities and protect infant industries. The EU status report on the trade talks also stated that negotiators made substantial progress on the investment text. The negotiators had made very good progress on rules for state-to-state mediation, it added. Movement on dispute settlement is significant since it suggests a breakthrough on long-standing EU concerns regarding investment protection in India. A European Parliament report had previously expressed regret that 'uncertainties remain for EU investors, notably as a result of India's decision to unilaterally terminate all its bilateral investment treaties (BITs) in 2016'. However, India has since begun to address the issue by negotiating new investment treaties under a revised framework. While India has shown flexibility in its position, favouring resolution of investor-state disputes under domestic laws, the EU has stated that an investment protection agreement could serve as an 'adequate stepping stone for further strengthening bilateral trade relations,' as it encourages negotiators to work towards establishing a multilateral investment court.
