Times of Oman14-04-2025
Muscat: Oman Sail is celebrating two gold medals at the 3rd Edition of the GCC Beach Games held at Al Mouj Muscat from 5-11 April 2025.
This achievement by Oman Sail athletes in the Oman National Sailing team was accompanied by two silver medals, two bronze medals and team silver in the Optimist team racing.
Abdullatif Al Qasmi notched two wins on his way to victory in the ILCA 4 competition, topping the table by three points. He also finished top of the Boys Fleet, where teammate Tamim Al Balushi finished third – claiming fourth overall.
Mohamed Al Marzooqi of UAE finished second and Marwa Al Hammadi third, finishing as the highest placed female sailor to win the Girls Fleet. Both Abdullatif Al Qasmi and Tamim Al Balushi were selected earlier this year to be part of the newly-formed ASYAD Sailing Team and compete in national, regional and international regattas.
Al Moatasem Al Farsi started and finished strongly with two wins in the ILCA 6 competition, finishing third overall. Teammates Al Salem Al Hamdani and Ibtisam Al Salmi finished 8th and 11th respectively. Othman Al Hammadi of UAE won three of the six races to take gold, while Dawood Sadeq from Bahrain finished second.
Hussain Al Jabri cruised to victory in the ILCA 7 race, winning four of the six races to win by five points. Adil Al Bastaki from UAE won the first race and secured second place, and Ahmed Al Sadiq from Bahrain won the last race to finish third. Hussain Al Jabri's four successive wins in between allowed him to claim the medal with one race to go.
Teammate Ali Al Saadi finished fifth, level on points with fourth place. Oman performed well in the largest fleet of the Games, the Optimist competition, with Khamis Al Mashaikhi claiming silver after three second places, Tarteel Al Hasani finishing third, and Hood Al Nofli finishing fourth.
Mohammed Al Qasmi finished 8th – second in the Junior Division - while Tarteel Al Hasani was the highest performing sailor in the Girls Fleet and Hadeel Al Mushaifri, 12th overall, finished fourth. These results earned Oman second place in the Optimist Team Racing. UAE took gold while Kuwait won bronze.
The team was led by Hashim Al Rashdi, Oman Sail's Head Coach of Performance, alongside Sultan Al Zadjali, Optimist Coach, and Ahmed Al Saadi, ILCA Coach. Hashim Al Rashdi, Oman Sail's Head Coach of Performance, said, 'The GCC Beach Games was a very successful regatta for our sailors. The medals, performances and improvement across the entire team was very pleasing and proof that our methods are working. The competition is always at a high level and gives our sailors valuable experience against their peers from across the region. We were especially happy with the team spirit and attitude displayed by the team who supported and inspired each other to put in medal winning performances.'
The 3rd GCC Beach Games was organised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, and the Oman Olympic Committee. The six-day event brought together 335 athletes across 46 events.

Pre-registration open for World Sailing Inclusion titles

MUSCAT: World Sailing is excited to announce that pre-registration is now open for the first World Sailing Inclusion Championships, taking place at the Mussanah Sailing School at the Barceló Mussanah Resort in the Sultanate of Oman from November 30 to December 8, 2025. Organised in partnership with Oman Sail, this groundbreaking event marks a major milestone for the sport — the first multi-class, global championship hosted by World Sailing that is designed specifically to include both Para classified athletes and athletes with disabilities who do not meet IPC classification criteria, all racing side by side in an inclusive, high-performance environment. The championship will feature competition across five categories, including the RS Venture Connect two-person keelboat, which is open to both Para-classified and inclusive category teams using servo control systems; the Hansa 303 single class, which welcomes sailors regardless of classification; the ILCA 6 class, designated for athletes with intellectual impairments and requiring Virtus, Special Olympics, or World Sailing II classification; the RS21 blind fleet racing class, open to visually impaired sailors classified as B1, B2, or B3; and Seated Wing Foiling, an exciting new discipline open to both Para MIC-classified and self-declared inclusive athletes. Interested sailors, teams and MNAs are invited to complete the pre-registration form to express interest. Dr Khamis al Jabri, CEO of Oman Sail Early pre-registration is strongly encouraged as entries will be limited per class, but sailors must note that pre-registration does not confirm entry due to the limited availability of charter equipment in each class and the rotational race formats detailed in the Notice of Race. Pre-registration will guide the organisers in the planning of equipment use, accommodation needs, classification logistics and the overall event structure. This is particularly important given the Notice of Race (NoR) and Sailing Instructions are available now on the World Sailing website and provide full details on eligibility, format, classification, equipment, and entry fees. Dr Khamis bin Salim al Jabri, CEO of Oman Sail, said: 'We are honoured to host the first World Sailing Inclusion Championships. This event is a powerful statement about the importance of inclusion — both in sport and in society. We look forward to welcoming sailors from around the world to Oman for what promises to be an unforgettable championship.' Hannah Stodel, Para World Sailing Manager, added: 'This first edition of such a landmark event promises to be an exciting opportunity to showcase the diversity of our sport. The Inclusion Championships are a celebration of what sailing can be — inclusive, dynamic, and welcoming to all. From grassroots participants to elite competitors, this is a chance to compete on equal terms.' A dedicated competition site has now launched, where you'll find more information on equipment, registration and media contacts. It will also host the confirmed entry list, results and all event updates in the lead-up to and during the championships. Oman's high-performance 49er team sets sail at Kieler Woche

Muscat – Oman's high-performance 49er team has commenced racing in Kiel, Germany, at the prestigious Kieler Woche regatta, one of the world's largest sailing events. The team, represented by Musab al Hadi and Waleed al Kindi, has joined 81 crews from 22 nations in the Men's Skiff 49er competition that runs till 25 June as part of the event's Olympic programme. The event marks the team's second major international competition of the season, following their participation in the 49er European Championship in Greece earlier this month. With 12 races scheduled over five days, the regatta offers a critical opportunity to refine skills and gain experience against a highly competitive fleet. The team, however, was forced to wait for their first race of the day due to the light summer breeze and ended their shortened in 33rd position after completing just two races. Hashim al Rashdi, Oman Sail's Head Performance Coach, commented: 'Kieler Woche is a cornerstone event in our preparation for the Asian Games 2026 and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The level of competition here is exceptional, providing our sailors with an ideal platform to test their progress under pressure. Musab and Waleed have shown great dedication, and we're confident this event will play a key role in their development as they work toward Olympic qualification.' The team is coached by Jacek Nowak, a seasoned 49er campaigner with extensive experience in European and world championships. Nowak emphasised the importance of adaptability: 'Kiel's conditions can be unpredictable, demanding quick decision-making and technical precision. Our goal is to leverage every race to strengthen the crew's tactical awareness and resilience, which are key for the upcoming World Championship and Asian Championship.' Following Kieler Woche, the team will return to Oman for further training before heading to the 49er World Championship in Italy from 7-13 October and the Asian Sailing Championship in November.
