Telcos urged to to improve connectivity, quality of service, especially in tourist areas, says Fahmi
The Communications Minister said telcos must do so in time to welcome the Visit Malaysia 2026.
He said this after a telecommunication coverage quality inspection with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) at several tourism sites in Sandakan, including the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and the Rainforest Discovery Centre.
During the inspection, they found that while most areas were well covered, there were several parts like the reception counter and veterinary clinic at the orangutan rehabilitation centre and the lakeside pavilion at the Rainforest Discovery Centre which had poor network connectivity.
'The telcos involved must address this issue immediately as a preparatory measure to welcome Visit Malaysia 2026,' said Fahmi.
Apart from the inspections, a dialogue session was also held to identify collaboration potentials between state-managed tourism players with the Communications Ministry to further boost this industry.
According to the MCMC, a total of 1,257 Mandatory Standards on Quality of Service (MSQoS) tests were conducted nationwide,including 196 locations in Sabah, in the first quarter of this year.
A total of 135 notices were issued from these inspections while for 2023 and 2024, a total of 46 penalties involving a total of RM6.55mil in compounds were issued for failure to comply with the MSQoS.

First introduced in 2012, Legoland Malaysia's Miniland Singapore has been reimagined in celebration of Singapore's 60th anniversary. The refreshed attraction features 16 impressive new models built from over 1.5 million Lego bricks. Highlights include iconic landmarks such as the Marina Bay Sands, the Singapore Flyer, the Merlion Fountain, as well as the Cloud Forest and Flower Dome. Meanwhile, Lim said Legoland Malaysia has continued to reinvest in facilities and attractions to enhance visitor experience and stay competitive in the evolving tourism landscape. He said Legoland's role in drawing domestic and international visitors is expected to further support economic activity in Johor. He added that the company has seen a steady increase in visitors over the years, buoyed by strong demand from its resident market, namely Malaysia and Singapore, which account for about 60 per cent of total visitors. The remaining 40 per cent comprises tourists from Indonesia, China, the Philippines, Australia and South Korea, among others. Lim said Legoland Malaysia remains upbeat about its outlook for the second half of the year and into next year, which will see both VJY 2026 and Visit Malaysia 2026 campaigns running concurrently. Creative economy gets 13MP recognition
PUTRAJAYA: The orange economy is a developing sector that has the potential to contribute to Malaysia's economic growth, says Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil ( pic ). Fahmi, who is also the government spokesman, said the sector, which includes creative industries such as film, music and animation, was included in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) as a result of a proposal and engagement session between the Communications Ministry and the Economy Ministry. 'The engagement process has convinced the Economy Ministry that the orange economy is a developing sector, which has the potential to help economic growth,' he said at a post-Cabinet press conference here yesterday, Bernama reported. Meanwhile, Fahmi said the details of the specific benefits of the orange economy sector will be known when Budget 2026 is presented this October. During the tabling of the 13MP in Parliament on Thursday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government was committed to driving the growth of the creative economy through the high-potential digital creative industry. According to Anwar, the Matching Fund and Joint Production Fund will be implemented to encourage joint investments between the government and the private sector in the production of world-class content. 'The country's digital creative industry has generated income of RM6.3bil, with an export value of RM850mil,' he said.

Fahmi: Plans underway with DBKL, developers to untangle Bangsar gridlock
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 — Short- and long-term strategies to address chronic traffic congestion along Jalan Bangsar are being formulated following a discussion between Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), and property developers at the Parliament building yesterday.
