IND vs ENG Test: India pocket multiple unwanted records at Headingley

Time of India7 days ago

India's first Test of the five-match series against England ended in defeat at Headingley, and it brought with it a string of unwanted records for the Shubman Gill-led side, despite several sparkling individual performances.

After setting a daunting target of 371 in the fourth innings, England overhauled it with remarkable composure, cruising to a five-wicket win after 82 overs on the final day. Ben Duckett's sublime 149 set the tone, while
and Jamie Smith calmly steered the chase home.
However, while England celebrated one of their finest modern-day fourth-innings chases, India's unwanted records piled up. The biggest among them was that the visitors became the first team in Test history to lose despite notching up five individual centuries in the same match.
This surpassed the previous record of four, set by Australia against England at the MCG way back in the 1928/29 Ashes.
Centuries by Indian players in the first Test at Headingley
Yashasvi Jaiswal: 101 (1st innings)
Shubman Gill: 147 (1st innings)
Rishabh Pant: 134 (1st innings) and 118 (3rd innings)
KL Rahul: 137 (3rd innings)

Pant's pair of hundreds also made him only the second designated wicketkeeper to score centuries in both innings of a Test, joining Zimbabwe's Andy Flower (2001).
Most runs scored by a team in a defeat
861 England vs Australia, Headingley 1948 847 Pakistan vs England, Rawalpindi 2022 837 New Zealand vs England, Trent Bridge 2022 835 India vs England Headingley 2025
India's batting effort across the two innings added up to 835 runs, making it the fourth-highest aggregate for a team in a losing cause in Test
.
Only England (861 vs Australia, Headingley 1948), Pakistan (847 vs England, Rawalpindi 2022), and New Zealand (837 vs England, Trent Bridge 2022) have scored more and still lost.
For England, the 373-5 win over India is the second-largest target they chased in their history, only behind the 378-3 victory at Birmingham in 2022. Notably, two of England's biggest run chases have come in their last two home tests against India.

Poll
Should India change their strategy for the next Test match?
Yes, they need a new approach No, they played well overall
This successful pursuit is also significant in terms of timing. It ranks as the second-largest target ever chased on the final scheduled day of a Test, behind only Don Bradman's Australia (404 vs England at Leeds, 1948).
Highest run-target runs successfully chased on the last scheduled day of a Test match
404 - AUS vs ENG, Leeds, 1948 (Day 5) 371 - IND vs ENG, Leeds, 2025 (Day 5) 350 - ENG vs IND, Leeds, 2025 (Day 5) 345 - WI vs NZ, Auckland, 1969 (Day 4) 342 - WI vs ENG, Lord's, 1984 (Day 5)
As India look to regroup before the second Test begins on July 2, the records from Headingley will serve as an uncomfortable reminder that scoring big doesn't always necessitate results.

Amid retirement speculations, Nathan Lyon says he won't quit until he beats India in India

Australia's veteran spinner Nathan Lyon has denied speculations over his immediate retirement from Test cricket. Lyon, who has been Australia's designated song master ever since Mike Hussey retired from Test cricket, passed on the role to wicketkeeper Alex Carey during their recent victory against West Indies in Barbados. It led to speculations that Lyon could announce his retirement any time soon. But Lyon said he before he hangs up his boots, he would like to be part of an Australian team that wins a Test series in India. 'I've always said I want to win away in India. I want to win away in England,' Lyon said. 'We've got that opportunity in a couple of years' time, but we've also got to take it Test by Test and make sure that we're doing everything here in West Indies right. Then we've got a massive summer at home with the Ashes. But another World Test Championship final would be on my cards for sure.' The 37-year-old off-spinner during the Test in Barbados had scribbled a note to Carey stating he would be the new song master of 'Under the southern cross'. It is a role that is seen prestigious in Australian set up with the likes of Allan Border, Ian Healy, Ricky Ponting, Justin Langer and Hussey being the previous ones to occupy the role after Rod Marsh started it. 'There's no talk about me retiring or even thoughts coming in my head,' Lyon told reporters. 'It's more about the team environment, making sure that I get the opportunity to pass it onto someone who I look at and absolutely love and the way he goes about it on and off the field. And I feel like Alex is the perfect candidate. I feel like I've run my race with it, and it's time for someone else to put their touch on,' Lyon said ahead of the second Test in Grenada. The role involves leading the team in a rendition of the song 'Under the Southern Cross I Stand,' which famously finishes with the line, 'Australia, you f**king beauty!' The Australian teams have a habit of singing the song at the end of every Test win. Lyon, will turn 38 by the time the Ashes commences later this year in Australia.

IND vs ENG 2nd Test: Can India fight back vs England in Edgbaston, or will rain disrupt their plans?

After letting a winning opportunity slip in the first Test against England, Team India returns to action following an eight-day break. The Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy resumes with the second Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham, starting Wednesday, July 2. With England leading the five-match series 1-0, the Men in Blue will be desperate to bounce back and avoid falling further behind. However, they may be without the services of ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who is expected to play only three matches in the series to manage his workload. As India look to level the series in the second Test against England, weather in Birmingham might prove just as challenging as the English batting lineup. According to AccuWeather, Edgbaston's skies aren't offering full sunshine across the five days. Here's what the forecast says: July 2 (Wednesday): Expect a stop-start opening day, with cooler temperatures, thick cloud cover, and a chance of thunderstorms. A delayed or interrupted start seems likely. July 3 (Thursday): Conditions brighten up with some sunshine and warmer weather - shaping up to be the best day for uninterrupted cricket. July 4 (Friday): Temperatures remain high, but increasing cloud cover later in the day could be a factor. July 5 (Saturday): Light morning showers are possible under continued cloudy skies. Another day where rain interruptions can't be ruled out. July 6 (Sunday): The final day is forecast to be the gloomiest, with heavy cloud and patchy rain threatening to cut into playtime once again. With both teams eyeing crucial moments in the series, the weather might just become the unpredictable third player on the field.
