GNFL and GNWFL round seven preview: Brigades and Northampton to battle it out in game of the round
Despite only winning one game so far this season, the Rams managed to get extremely close to causing a big upset against the league leaders Railways in Kalbarri.
Northampton showed character in the contest, with coach Jeremy Heberle crediting his side for their resilience and determination.
'Certainly proud of the efforts the boys are showing, we are heading in the right direction,' he said.
'I was really happy with our match-ups and our decision-making in key moments throughout that game.
'We bounced back and tested one of the best teams this year, but we are always looking to improve.'
Heberle said his side's work rate off the ball and pressure in defence led to the impressive outing against the undefeated Blues.
'We put a focus on our work rate off the ball and it showed,' Heberle said.
'We worked harder when we didn't have the footy and pressure was high.
'I was really happy with how our players handled the situation and their match-ups.'
Now turning their attention to hosting Brigades this weekend, Heberle said the confidence within the playing group was high.
'Confidence is up given that we really took it to Railways in the way that we did last week,' he said.
'We are just looking to focus on ourselves and continue to improve.
'Of course we would like to win every game in the season but as long as we are improving, then we are happy.
'Brigades pose a threat but we are more than capable of matching them.
'Shutting down someone like Dylan Ralph will be key as well as giving some attention to Hayden Johnson.'
Currently rounding out the top four, Brigades have two wins to their name against Rovers and Mullewa.
Regardless of their win-loss ratio, Brigades showed their potential danger to the top teams with a strong performance against reigning premiers Chapman Valley last weekend.
The Hawks put on a show in the third quarter, clawing their way back into the contest as the Royals were caught out briefly with Brigades making the most of the momentum swing.
While Chapman Valley proved why they are one of the flag favourites for 2025, running away to win by 18 points, the Royals hadn't been tested like that at home in a quarter since their loss against Railways in round three.
Brigades will take their best 22 to Northampton with the hopes of picking up their third win of the year as they look to stay in the top four.
The GNWFL game of the round will be played at Greenough Oval on Saturday when Rovers host Railways, with both teams looking to clinch their second win of the season.
Railways are coming off their first win in 665 days when they beat Northampton in Kalbarri as the team got their season rolling in 2025.
After not fielding a team last year, the Blues are back on the winners' list this season and will be looking to go two in a row when they face the Demons.
Rovers, however, are coming off a big loss to flag favourites Towns in what was a tough day at Greenough. This week provides a better match-up for the Demons as they look to pick themselves back up against the Blues at home.
Rovers' last win came in round three against Northampton when the Dees rolled over the top of the Rams in stunning fashion, winning by 65 points in what was their first win in over two seasons.

GSFL 2025: Ryley Valli holds slender lead over chasing pack going into final five round of coaches votes award
A terrific race is developing between the leading contenders in the Great Southern Football League coaches' player of the year award, entering the last part of the regular season. A total of 11 votes is all that separates the top four in the standings and 20 votes covers the top five at the conclusion of round 10. Voting will go silent after round 12 and the winner will be announced on Kleemann Medal night. Last year's winner Ryley Valli is firmly in the mix again, the Railways ball magnet holding a slender lead going into round 11. Valli picked up five votes in round seven, before a perfect 10 in the round eight win over Mt Barker and then added seven in the round nine win over Royals to climb to the top with 53. Bulls pair Daniel Patching and Darcy Wallinger are nipping at his heels, with 46 and 44 votes respectively. Patching collected nine votes in the Bulls round nine triumph over Albany while Wallinger got a perfect 10 from the coaches in round seven when his side beat Denmark-Walpole. Ever consistent Shark Isaac Baum is fourth with 42 votes while the big mover over the last four rounds has been Bulls defender Tristan Ballard. Ballard has regularly picked up votes to shoot himself to fifth on 33. North Albany find themselves on the bottom of the ladder but are represented inside the top 10 with veteran Matt Orzel, who was awarded 10 votes in the Kangas big win over the Lions in round nine. Bailey Taylor received nine votes in NAIDOC Round last weekend as the Sharks handed the Tigers their first loss of the season. Lion Corey Ward collected nine votes in a losing affair against the Magpies while Tyler Stone, who sits inside the top 10, picked up eight in that same round 10 fixture. Nine-goal hero Camball McMahon was two short of a perfect 10 for the Bulls in their big win over the Kangas. Towns flex their muscles against Brigades in standalone fixture for round 10 of the GNWFL
The GNWFL round 10 was headlined by a standalone fixture between Brigades and Towns at GBSC Sports Park on Saturday, leaving Chapman Valley without a game after their opponents forfeited. Brigades played host to league leaders Towns in what was a tough day for the Hawks, as the Bulldogs proved why they are a force. Jess Giudice-Nairn and Sharntay Westberg booted three goals each in a dominant display by Bulldogs stars. Teammates, Emilee Bevan, Ashleigh Jones and Emily McAuley kicked two goals each and Shathea Doley one major. Emilee Bevan was awarded best on for the Dogs in the big win while Ava Gould, Emily McAuley, Jorja Beven and Vanessa Gould also impressed for the visitors. In what was a tough day for the Hawks, Liberty Graham, Emily Peel, Claire Garnaut, Sabre Oswald and Keeley Svenson stood tall and were judged among the best for the home side despite the loss. It was always going to be an uphill battle for Brigades with the way the league has shaped up this year. Chapman Valley are leading the league with seven wins and no losses while Towns are close behind them with only one loss, three games clear of Brigades who sit in third. A three-goal first term got Towns off to a flyer, setting the tone for the rest of the afternoon. The Bulldogs piled on the goals leading into the main break to lead by 37 points whilst also holding Brigades scoreless. Brigades managed to work the ball into their forward 50 against a strong defensive unit in Towns as the home side collected their only point for the day, which came in the third term. The Bulldogs ran away with it and never looked back as the visitors booted eight goals in the second half and ran out 13.12 (90) to 0.1 (1) winners. Towns now set their sights on Railways for the round 11 clash at WA Country Builders Stadium while Brigades gear up for Rovers at GBSC Sports Park as the Hawks look to get back on the winners list. Chapman Valley failed to get on the park due to Northampton forfeiting the game at Mazzuchelli Oval on Saturday. They both have the bye in round 11 of the GNWFL.
