Datadog acquires Metaplane to boost AI-ready data monitoring
Metaplane delivers end-to-end data observability using machine learning-powered monitoring and column-level lineage features intended to prevent, detect and resolve data quality issues within an organisation's data infrastructure.
This move comes as artificial intelligence becomes more prominent and businesses increasingly adopt cloud platforms such as Snowflake and Databricks, making the integrity and reliability of data a key consideration for companies.
According to Datadog, the integration of Metaplane's capabilities will accelerate its expansion in the data observability market, enhancing its existing products, such as Data Jobs Monitoring and Data Streams Monitoring.
Traditional data observability solutions, Datadog states, are primarily focused on monitoring data once it arrives within data lakes or warehouses, which can leave gaps in visibility for data teams. Datadog plans to address this challenge by ensuring coverage across the entire data lifecycle, encompassing production, transformation and consumption stages.
With broader data observability, Datadog aims to support data teams as they take on greater responsibilities, including the development of artificial intelligence applications and data products, areas in which complete insight across the data stack is increasingly critical.
Michael Whetten, Vice President of Product at Datadog, commented: "Observability is no longer just for developers and IT teams; it's now an essential part of data teams' day-to-day responsibilities as they manage increasingly complex and business-critical workflows. This complexity will become even more pronounced as more businesses deploy AI applications. By unifying observability across applications and data, Datadog will help organizations build reliable AI systems."
Metaplane's co-founder and Chief Executive Officer, Kevin Hu, said: "Our mission at Metaplane is to help companies ensure trust in the data that powers their business. Joining forces with Datadog enables us to bring data observability to tens of thousands more companies, while bringing data teams and software teams closer together."
Following the acquisition, Metaplane will continue to support its existing customers and will operate as Metaplane by Datadog, welcoming new customers as part of the expanded group.
Data observability tools are designed to monitor a company's data stack, alerting teams to changes and potential failures by continuously tracking the properties and movement of data. Visibility across the full range of processes, from the origins in software systems through to transformation and consumption, provides additional assurance for data quality and reliability.
By pursuing greater integration between its unified monitoring platform and Metaplane's focus on data observability, Datadog plans to enable organisations to better identify and act on data insights, supporting broader strategic initiatives around digital transformation and the development of AI-powered products.

Datadog launches Sydney AWS region to boost local compliance
Datadog has launched its full suite of products and services in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Asia-Pacific (Sydney) Region, allowing Australian organisations to meet local privacy, security and data residency requirements. This expansion enables Datadog's customers and partners in Australia to store and process data within the country, with the capability designed to support compliance in highly regulated sectors including government, banking, healthcare, and higher education. Local capacity The addition of the AWS Sydney Region comes as Australian organisations are expected to increase their cloud spending significantly. Rob Thorne, Vice President for Asia-Pacific and Japan (APJ) at Datadog, outlined the scale of this investment: "Australian organisations are on track to spend nearly A$26.6 billion on public cloud services alone in 2025. For organisations in highly regulated industries, it isn't just the cloud provider that needs to have local data storage capacity – it should be all layers of the tech stack." The new local instance enables Datadog to deliver its observability and security platform with in-region data processing. This helps Australian organisations meet national requirements by ensuring that sensitive or regulated information remains within their borders. Cloud agnosticism Although the Datadog instance operates on AWS, its platform is designed to monitor infrastructures and applications running on any cloud provider, allowing flexibility for customers and partners across different deployment environments. The platform's expansion in Australia follows Datadog's existing regions in North America, Asia, and Europe, building on its strategy to offer monitoring and security capabilities tailored for local compliance demands. Commitment to Australia and New Zealand Yanbing Li, Chief Product Officer at Datadog, explained the significance of the development for the region. "This milestone reinforces Datadog's commitment to supporting the region's advanced digital capabilities - especially the Australian Government's ambition to make the country a leading digital economy. With strong momentum across public and private sectors, our investment enhances trust in Datadog's unified and cloud-agnostic observability and security platform, and positions us to meet the evolving needs of agencies and enterprises alike." In addition to the enhanced in-region capacity, the expansion is part of the company's wider strategy in Australia and New Zealand. Thorne stated, "This milestone reflects Datadog's priority to support these investments. It's the latest step in our expansion down under, and follows the continued addition of headcount to support our more than 1,100 A/NZ customers, as well as the recent appointments of Field CTO for APJ, Yadi Narayana, and Vice President of Commercial Sales for APJ, Adrian Towsey, to our leadership team." Supporting compliance The move to local data storage is intended to address increasing regulatory demands across various industries in Australia, where legislation often requires data related to citizens, clients, or patients to remain within national boundaries. Leveraging AWS in Sydney for its own systems, Datadog ensures that organisations can confidently meet legislative obligations without needing to change their cloud providers for core applications and infrastructure. Datadog's observability and security platform provides real-time monitoring across infrastructure, applications, and cloud environments. Its software integrates functions such as infrastructure monitoring, application performance management, log analytics, user experience monitoring, and security into a consolidated offering. Market context Australian organisations across sectors are accelerating digital transformation projects, with cloud adoption at the core of enterprise IT strategies. The establishment of in-country data handling by global cloud and SaaS providers addresses significant barriers related to regulation and local auditing requirements, especially for sectors that handle regulated or sensitive information. With local support, investment in staff, and alignment of its platform capabilities, Datadog aims to help customers and partners maintain compliance while adopting a range of public or private cloud technologies in line with their operational needs.

Datadog named Leader in Gartner observability report for fifth year
Datadog has been recognised as a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Observability Platforms for the fifth consecutive year. The designation follows Gartner's evaluation of technology providers in the observability sector, assessing companies based on their ability to execute and the completeness of their vision. In Gartner's Magic Quadrant structure, Leaders are described as those companies that execute well against their current vision and are well positioned for tomorrow. Observability market The Magic Quadrant for Observability Platforms is informed by Gartner's research into the application performance monitoring and observability market. The assessment provides organisations with an overview of vendors' strengths and abilities to meet customer requirements in a rapidly evolving area, where differentiation among providers is considered distinct and market growth remains high. The quadrant categorises providers into four segments: Leaders, Visionaries, Niche Players, and Challengers, each defined by differing levels of vision and execution. Datadog's continued presence in the Leader category is underpinned by its focus on product development and research and development. The company states that feedback from its customers is a significant driver for the features and enhancements introduced to the platform each year. Customer insights Recent feedback from customers on Gartner Peer Insights reflects on the practical impact of the platform for organisations of varying industries and scales. A Senior Director of Engineering at a software company commented: Datadog provides incredible insights into complex tooling. They continue to innovate and add new features regularly throughout the year, and their CSM [customer success management] team is very responsive and helpful. The user interface is very clean and easy to use, even with a tremendous amount of data and features. The APM and USM [universal service monitoring] features have been invaluable additions to our observability and helping us remediate issues quickly. The Watchdog feature has also been terrific for proactive alerting of things that didn't have specific monitors set up. Similarly, an SRE Engineer at a healthcare and biotech company said: The insights that we're able to get by building custom metrics within Datadog have been invaluable. We've managed to catch behaviours within our application that we otherwise wouldn't have caught, and it's helped us create a more reliable experience for our customers. Company perspective Yanbing Li, Chief Product Officer at Datadog, said the company values its standing within the industry and views ongoing research as essential to its strategy. It is significant for us to see Gartner name Datadog a Leader in its Magic Quadrant for Observability Platforms for a fifth straight year. Product innovation and R&D continue to be key focus areas for us as both Datadog and our customers embrace AI to build and improve applications, workflows and cloud environments. We look forward to working with our user base to further our product strategy and leadership in the market. Broader context The recognition by Gartner is based on assessments by the research organisation and does not amount to endorsement of any vendor, product or service mentioned in its publications. Feedback on platforms such as Gartner Peer Insights consists of individual opinions from users based on their own experiences. Datadog provides a software-as-a-service platform that covers infrastructure monitoring, application performance monitoring, log management, user experience monitoring, cloud security and related services. The platform is used by a broad range of organisations seeking unified oversight and enhanced security for their technology environments as they undertake digital transformation and cloud migration initiatives.
