ST LOUIS - Unionised workers who assemble Boeing's fighter jets in the St. Louis area rejected Boeing's latest contract offer on Aug 3 and will strike at midnight on Aug 4, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers union said.
'IAM District 837 members ... deserve a contract that reflects their skill, dedication, and the critical role they play in our nation's defense,' the union's Business Representative Tom Boelling said.
Boeing said it was ready for the action. 'We are prepared for a strike and have fully implemented our contingency plan,' Boeing Air Dominance vice president and general manager Dan Gillian said in an email.
'We're disappointed our employees in St. Louis rejected an offer that featured 40 per cent average wage growth,' he added.
Last week, Boeing sent a new contract offer to the union with some minor compensation changes that would benefit senior union members, according to the company. The offer also kept current overtime policies, which Boeing had proposed modifying in the last contract offer.
The union had rejected the previous offer, saying that the offer was insufficient.

Malaysia pledges over US$240 billion in US deals to avert trade fallout and to lower tariffs

[KUALA LUMPUR] In a bid to secure a lower tariff rate, Malaysia has committed to trade agreements with the United States, with deals cumulatively valued at over US$240 billion for the purchase of items such as Boeing aircraft, coal and telecommunications equipment. In a special ministerial statement in Parliament on Monday (Aug 4), Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Zafrul Aziz said that this strategy is intended to narrow the trade deficit between Malaysia and the US, and to reduce the impact of American tariffs. Under the new tariff structure announced by Washington on Jul 31, Malaysia faces a lower tariff rate of 19 per cent, down from the initial 25 per cent proposed under the US' retaliatory trade measures. Malaysia's tariff now matches the rates imposed on Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia and the Philippines. The rate is lower than Vietnam's 20 per cent and Brunei's 25 per cent, but higher than Singapore's 10 per cent. Laos and Myanmar face the highest rate among Asean countries, at 40 per cent. Tengku Zafrul said: 'The United States encourages Malaysia to procure from and invest in America under Section 6 of the agreement, to address the bilateral trade imbalance.' In 2024, the US was Malaysia's largest export destination, with shipments worth nearly RM198.7 billion (S$60.4 billion), and among its top sources of foreign direct investment, totalling RM32.8 billion. Although semiconductors are currently exempt from US retaliatory tariffs , they remain under investigation under Section 232 of the US Trade Expansion Act of 1962, which permits tariffs on national security grounds, he said. 'We must stay vigilant and ready for any potential tariff expansion affecting the semiconductor industry,' he added. What are the deals? The commitments between Malaysia and the US span several key sectors, including technology and semiconductors, energy, aviation and telecommunications. The trade deals include a US$150 billion commitment over five years by multinational corporations in Malaysia to procure goods such as semiconductors, data centres and aircraft. Government-linked company Telekom Malaysia, for example, will purchase US$119 million in telecommunications equipment. Further commitments include US$70 billion in cross-border Malaysian investments in the US over 10 years, along with annual purchases of US$42.6 million in coal by state-owned energy company Tenaga Nasional, and US$3.4 billion in liquefied natural gas by national oil producer Petronas. The deals also include a US$19 billion purchase of Boeing aircraft by Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG). Malaysia has also agreed to reduce or eliminate duties on 98.4 per cent of imports from the US, ease certain non-tariff barriers, and remove the requirement for US social media platforms and cloud-service providers to contribute a portion of their Malaysian revenues to a government fund. Boeing deal not tariff-driven Tengku Zafrul, referring to the purchase of aircraft, stressed that the Boeing jets ordered by MAG were not a response to tariff pressure, but part of a long-term fleet renewal strategy . The airline is replacing its ageing B737-800 aircraft, which have been in service for an average of 14 years. In 2016, MAG ordered 25 Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft. Thirteen had been delivered as of November 2023, with the rest arriving in phases until 2027. The company placed an additional order for 30 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft on Mar 20, before the reciprocal tariffs were announced, scheduled to be delivered between 2025 and 2035. Another 30 aircraft remain under consideration, pending MAG's future growth strategy, he added. 'The total procurement value includes aircraft, engines, training, maintenance and long-term operational support,' said Tengku Zafrul, adding that Malaysia's aerospace sector contributed RM25.1 billion to the country's gross domestic product in 2024 and supported 30,000 jobs.

UBS Pays US$300 Million to settle Credit Suisse mortgage case

[ZURICH] UBS Group said it reached an agreement with the US Department of Justice to resolve a legacy Credit Suisse matter related to the former bank's role in selling residential mortgage-backed securities in the US. An agreement between the DOJ and a Credit Suisse subsidiary had been reached 'to resolve all outstanding Consumer Relief Obligations under the 2017 settlement by paying US$300 million,' UBS said in a statement on Monday (Aug 4). UBS is working through a list of legacy legal issues inherited from Credit Suisse, which it bought in an emergency rescue in 2023. In May, UBS agreed to pay US$511 million to settle a US investigation into how Credit Suisse Group helped rich Americans evade taxes. A number of lenders had faced claims over the sale of mortgage securities that plummeted in value during the 2008 financial crisis. The banks faced allegations that they misrepresented the quality of the home loans underpinning these securities in order to win buyers, exacerbating the impact of the sub-prime mortgage collapse. In 2023, UBS agreed to pay US$1.44 billion to settle its own long-running case over US mortgage-backed securities, which was one of the bank's biggest legal headaches at the time. UBS said that as a result of Monday's announcement it expects to recognise a credit in its third quarter earnings in the bank's non-core unit as a result of the release of the contingent liability. Trump to name new Fed governor, jobs data head in coming days

[WASHINGTON] US President Donald Trump said that he will announce a new Federal Reserve governor and a new jobs data statistician in the coming days, two appointments that may shape his economic agenda amid anxiety over the trajectory of global growth. Trump made the comments to reporters on Sunday (Aug 3) on his way back to the White House from a weekend in Bedminster, New Jersey. He has faced criticism for his relentless attacks on the Fed and for firing Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) chief Erika McEntarfer after data showed weak jobs growth, moves that are seen as undermining institutions typically viewed as free from political influence. For the Fed, the president said that he has a 'couple of people in mind' for the role that opened up after Adriana Kugler announced on Friday that she would vacate her board of governors seat, which was not due to expire until January. Her exit handed Trump a sooner-than-anticipated opportunity to appoint a governor who more closely aligns with his preference for lower interest rates. National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, former Fed governor Kevin Warsh, current Fed governor Christopher Waller and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have all been floated as contenders to lead the central bank. Trump's nominee for the open governorship could move into the chairman role when Jerome Powell's term expires in May. Kugler's departure unfolds amid unprecedented public pressure from the White House on the central bank over interest rates, with Trump regularly launching personal insults at Powell. Trump has called the Fed chief 'TOO ANGRY, TOO STUPID, & TOO POLITICAL' for persistently refusing to vote to lower rates, and he has demanded Powell's resignation. At the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Trump fired McEntarfer hours after a weak jobs report based in part on steep downward revisions for May and June. Her firing was criticised by her predecessor, who called it an unfounded move. BT in your inbox Start and end each day with the latest news stories and analyses delivered straight to your inbox. Sign Up Sign Up 'This is damaging,' William Beach, whom Trump picked in his first term to head the bureau, said on CNN's State of the Union on Sunday. 'I don't know that there's any grounds at all for this firing.' Studies indicate that the agency's data is more accurate than 20 or 30 years ago, including any revisions of the initial data, Beach said. Even so, he said that he will trust future BLS data because people working for the agency are 'some of the most loyal Americans you can imagine', making the bureau 'the finest statistical agency in the entire world'. McEntarfer was confirmed by the Senate in a bipartisan 86-8 vote. Vice-President JD Vance, then a senator, voted to approve her nomination. Hassett, speaking on Fox News on Sunday and NBC's Meet the Press, alleged that the large jobs data revisions were poorly explained and were evidence enough for a 'fresh set of eyes' at BLS.
