Malaysia continues to forge trade, investment ties with global strategic partners, says Tengku Zafrul
The Investment, Trade and Industry Minister said their discussions covered various strategic initiatives, from the review of free trade agreements (FTAs), including the Malaysia-Australia Free Trade Agreement (MAFTA) and the Malaysia-Pakistan Closer Economic Partnership Agreement (MPCEPA).
He said this also included the expansion of the Malaysia-Turkiye Free Trade Agreement (MTFTA) to the services and investment sectors, as well as continued support for the Palestinian economy.
"We also urge the active participation of all these countries in the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) 2025, the world's largest halal platform, as well as exploring opportunities in high-tech (technology) and sustainable sectors such as renewable energy, the digital economy, and the halal industry.
"Our aim is clear - to drive economic growth that is inclusive, resilient, and brings shared prosperity," he said in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) Saturday (July 12). - Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, July 13 (Bernama) -- Authorities need to investigate the authenticity of a document allegedly containing minutes of a Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) meeting that went viral on social media, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said if the document is found to be genuine and classified, its dissemination could have legal implications, especially under the Official Secrets Act 1972 (OSA). 'I've been informed that a police report has been lodged. I cannot confirm whether the document is authentic or not. But if it is indeed genuine and classified, the OSA would apply. Therefore, we must be cautious and avoid spreading such material. 'We leave it to the police to investigate. Too early to say if US tariffs will impact JS-SEZ, says Johor exco man
JOHOR BARU: Johor is watching the negotiations between Putrajaya and Washington closely before the 25% reciprocal tariffs imposed by the United States on Malaysia take effect on Aug 1. State investment, trade, consumer affairs and human resources committee chairman Lee Ting Han said it was too early to say if the new tariff rate would have an impact on the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). 'Initially, the Federal Government projected that Malaysia would get a good deal, but the United States decided to increase the tariff. 'So now, we have been told that the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry is negotiating with its American counterparts,' he added. Lee, who is also the Paloh assemblyman, was speaking on the sidelines of the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia's (ACCCIM) 79th annual general meeting at a hotel here on Sunday (July 13). He added that the state government hoped the talks between Malaysia and the United States would yield some good news. 'Johor is among the biggest exporters of petrochemicals, semiconductors, electrical and electronic goods, and furniture to the world, including to the United States, but we are still uncertain about the impact of the new tariff rate,' he said. On Monday (July 7), the United States announced it would impose a higher 25% tariff on all Malaysian products exported to the United States effective Aug 1, an increase from the 24% announced in April. International Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Zafrul Abdul Aziz said Malaysia is optimistic that further negotiations will bring a positive outcome. He said the Aug 1 deadline provides Malaysia several weeks to negotiate for a 'win-win' trade deal for both countries. 'Of course, we will continue the engagement. 'If we are not optimistic, why should we continue the engagement? 'The important thing is that the US still wants to negotiate,' he added.

Johor exco: State hopeful of positive outcome from federal govt-US trade talks
JOHOR BARU, July 13 — The Johor government is optimistic that ongoing trade negotiations between the federal government and the United States will yield mutually beneficial outcomes, said Lee Ting Han. The state Investment, Trade, Consumer Affairs and Human Resources Committee chairman said a positive outcome was crucial for Johor. 'Johor is directly impacted by the coming trade tariffs as we are among the biggest export contributors in petrochemicals, semiconductors, electrical and electronic goods, and furniture to the US. 'At present, it's a wait-and-see situation for us before the deadline next month. 'We hope that the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti) can deliver some good news after their negotiations with their US counterparts,' he told reporters on the sidelines of the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia's (ACCCIM) 79th annual general meeting at the Thistle Hotel here today. Miti is currently in talks with US trade representatives to address unresolved issues, clarify the scope and impact of the announced tariffs, and work towards concluding the negotiations. The US is expected to impose a 25 per cent reciprocal tariff on Malaysian exports, set to take effect on August 1. Lee said the state government would refrain from making further comments until after the tariffs are implemented. 'It's still early for the state government to comment further on this issue. 'Depending on the outcome of the negotiations, we will address the tariff's impact with the various industries in the state,' he said. On the issue of inflation in Johor, Lee said it was being addressed as a preventive measure led by the menteri besar. He said Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi had taken public concerns seriously and was proactive in tackling the matter. 'For Onn Hafiz, prevention is better than cure. He also doesn't want to see inflation becoming a major issue once the Johor Baru–Singapore Rapid Transit System Link (RTS Link) and the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) are completed. 'With that, the menteri besar has also tasked the state government with developing strategies to curb the rising cost of living,' he said.
