Spurs promote Mitch Johnson to head coach, taking over for Gregg Popovich
It's his team going forward.
Johnson, the interim coach for the final 77 games the Spurs played this season, will be the new coach of the team after Friday's announcement by Gregg Popovich that he is stepping down and transitioning solely into being the team's president of basketball operations.
Popovich had the job since 1996.
'When I took the opportunity to join the Austin Spurs over nine years ago, I had no idea that opportunity was in front of me,' Johnson said at the end of the regular season. 'And so, it's sometimes funny how your journey takes you and sometimes the biggest moments can come from the least likely spots.'

Johnson got the job, initially, on virtually no notice. Popovich had a stroke in the team's San Antonio arena on Nov. 2, a few hours before the Spurs played the Minnesota Timberwolves that night. Johnson took over on an interim basis and kept the job for the remainder of the season.
He went 32-45 in those games, which goes on Popovich's record since he was still technically the head coach. When Johnson coaches on opening night next season, it'll be his 78th time in the role and his record — unless the NBA makes an exception — going into it will be 0-0.
Spurs star Victor Wembanyama said when the season ended that he had belief the organization would do the right thing.
'I trust the organization ... and I also trust Mitch to grow into that role,' Wembanyama said. 'So, I think we are in good hands.'
Johnson has been in the Spurs organization for nine seasons, the last five of those in San Antonio. He was San Antonio's coach in the NBA Summer League at Las Vegas in 2022 and 2023 — with Popovich watching just about every move, albeit from the stands.
His time with the Spurs started with their G League affiliate in Austin, Texas. Before that, he spent one season as an assistant at the University of Portland in 2016.

In the sweltering summer heat, with the field temperature measured at 104 degrees, Charlotte FC (12-11-2, 38 points) kept cool with a match-winning goal by Idan Toklomati in the 60th minute. It was not all good news for Charlotte. In the 70th minute, Bill Tuiloma went down in the middle of a Toronto offensive run and grabbed his right leg, which forced his substitution by manager Dean Smith. For Toronto, in the third minute of second-half stoppage time, Deybi Flores went up for the ball and collided with teammate Lazar Stefanovic. Flores stayed on the field for nearly a minute but did not leave the game despite a potential head injury for the substitute midfielder. Offensively, Charlotte kept on the counter-attack after going up two goals and Johnson preserved the lead with two saves, with a third stop by Sigurd Rosted. The victory for Charlotte FC gives the side four wins in a row, each win featuring multiple goals. Now the side from the Queen City takes a break from MLS play until Aug. 10. In the next two weeks, the club enters the Leagues Cup with matches against Liga MX sides Juarez, Guadalajara and Monterrey. Toronto has no matches until the league starts again on Aug. 9.

Jets owner Woody Johnson completes purchase of stake in Premier League club Crystal Palace
LONDON (AP) — Crystal Palace confirmed Thursday that New York Jets owner Woody Johnson's purchase of Eagle Football's shareholding in the Premier League club has been completed. 'I am honored and privileged to be joining the ownership group of Crystal Palace Football Club,' Johnson told the club website. Palace announced last month that Johnson had signed 'a legally binding contract' to buy the shares of fellow American John Textor, who had a 43% stake in the London club, with reports at the time placing the price between $220 million and $260 million. The latest club statement gave no financial details. Johnson joins chairman Steve Parish, Josh Harris and David Blitzer as a partner and director of the club, and has also signed the Premier League's Owners' Charter. 'It is an organization with a proud history, tradition, and deep roots in English football in South London, which I came to admire during my time as US Ambassador to the United Kingdom,' Johnson said. Palace finished 12th last season in the 20-team Premier League. Competition dispute Johnson's arrival at Palace comes with the club in dispute with UEFA over which European competition it will play in next season after winning the FA Cup in May — its first major trophy in 120 years of existence. Kyle Filipowski becomes 1st Utah Jazz player to earn NBA Summer League MVP
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Kyle Filipowski became the first Utah Jazz player to earn most valuable player honors in the NBA Summer League on Tuesday. Filipowski, a 6-foot-11 forward out of Duke, averaged a league-leading 29.3 points per contest over three games while adding 7.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists. He shot 56.1% from the field and 39.1% from 3-point range. His best summer league performance came against San Antonio on July 14th when he finished with 35 points and 11 rebounds. He's hoping to use his summer league experience as a springboard for the role he wants to play with the Jazz in his second NBA season. 'Obviously it's different in summer league versus (the regular season),' Filipowski said, following the third and final summer league game for the Jazz. 'I'm just trying to be myself out there right now. However that translates to the season, that's how it's going to be. I'm going to make the most of it in that way.' Filipowski appeared in 72 games in his rookie campaign with Utah, making 27 starts. He averaged 9.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in 21.2 minutes per game.
