Iranian lawmaker says Strait of Hormuz still under review, no decision yet to close it

Indian Express6 days ago
Hardline Iranian lawmaker Esmail Kosari said any closure of the Strait of Hormuz was still under review but no decision has yet been made, in comments carried by Iran's state media on Monday.
'Military measures concerning the Strait of Hormuz have been completed, but no decision has yet been made regarding its (closure) and the matter is still under review,' Kosari, a member of the national security committee in the Iranian parliament, was quoted as saying.
It was not immediately clear what military measures he may be referring to.
The possibility of Iran closing the waterway, through which about a fifth of global oil and gas shipments pass, was speculated upon during the 12-day air war between Israel and Iran last month.
The strait lies between Oman and Iran and links the Gulf with the Gulf of Oman to the south and the Arabian Sea beyond.
Iran has over the years threatened to close it but has never followed through on that threat.
'It's us who decide what time it is open and what time it would be closed; currently we are reviewing and we can execute whenever it's necessary,' Kosari added.

Iran agrees to talks with UK, France & Germany

Synopsis The three European countries, or E3, are parties to the original nuclear agreement, formally called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, which US President Donald Trump abandoned in 2018. On Friday, Axios reported that Iran and the E3 were expected to meet in Europe next week to discuss a potential agreement. Iran has reached an agreement in principle to hold talks with the UK, France and Germany over its nuclear program, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported. ADVERTISEMENT Discussions are ongoing to finalize the location, with the talks possibly taking place "next week," the report said Sunday, citing an unidentified source. On Friday, Axios reported that Iran and the E3 were expected to meet in Europe next week to discuss a potential agreement. Diplomatic efforts to revive Iran's nuclear deal have stalled since June 13, when Israel launched an attack on the country days before a planned sixth round of Oman-mediated talks between Tehran and Washington. That derailed negotiations that had begun in April. Iran was also engaged in limited parallel talks with the E3 and the European and the US have remained deadlocked over restarting their own nuclear negotiations. Iranian officials have demanded assurances against further attacks, including by the US, which joined Israel in bombing Iran's nuclear sites last month. Rubio urges Syrian authorities to prevent IS resurgence by any means

Washington, July 20 (UNI) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called on Syrian authorities to deploy all available resources to prevent the resurgence of Islamic State (IS) and other Islamic terror groups if the country hopes to move toward lasting peace. 'If authorities in Damascus want to preserve any chance of achieving a unified, inclusive and peaceful Syria free of ISIS and of Iranian control, they must help end this calamity by using their security forces to prevent ISIS and any other violent jihadists from entering the area and carrying out massacres,' Rubio posted on X. His remarks come amid relative calm in the Druze majority province of Suwayda in southern Syria, following several days of deadly clashes between Druze and Bedouin militias. According to Syrian Interior Ministry spokesperson Nour al-Din al-Baba, fighting in the city has now ceased. The violence, which erupted last week, reportedly began when armed Bedouin factions attacked Druze settlements. Over 30 people were killed and more than 100 wounded in the ensuing clashes, including 20 soldiers loyal to the Syrian transitional government, according to the Syrian Defence Ministry. To curtail the violence, Syrian security forces were deployed to Suwayda in an attempt to restore law and order and dismantle unauthorised armed groups. However, their involvement further exacerbated the situation as the security forces were notably aligned with the Bedouins, with Israel intervening and bombing several targets, such as the Defence Ministry headquarters, and a military complex near the Presidential Palace. Damascus later confirmed that it had removed all its military infrastructure from the area, giving the Druze residents freedom to monitor their own security. However, following the evacuation of all internal security forces, renewed violence gripped the area, with Damascus deploying its forces to restore law and order. While Israel has typically opposed any Syrian military presence in southern Syria, it gave Damascus a limited time period of 48hrs to send its security apparatus to contain all violence. UNI ANV SSP
