Gilas Pilipinas begins FIBA Asia Cup build-up, but Cone not expecting full attendance yet
But the multi-titled tactician isn't expecting to have a full attendance on the first day of practice, especially since most of the players are either not in the country yet or are still suiting up for their mother teams in the ongoing PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup.
The Monday practice will mark the national team's first meeting one month before the Asia Cup slated on August 5 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
"It's not going to be a heavy, long practice, obviously. I'm not even sure if everybody is going to show up, especially the guys in the playoffs," Cone said on Sunday after steering Barangay Ginebra to a Game 6 win over San Miguel in the semifinals.
"We got a Game 7 on Wednesday so asking the guys to come to practice is kind of hard."
Most of the members of the Gilas pool are currently in the PBA playoffs with Scottie Thompson, Japeth Aguilar, Troy Rosario, and Jamie Malonzo playing for Cone's Gin Kings, who dragged the San Miguel Beermen to a do-or-die Game 7 on Wednesday.
The Beermen, meanwhile, also have active Gilas players in June Mar Fajardo and CJ Perez. National team gunner Calvin Oftana is also still with a TNT tem that had already clinched a ticket to the finals to keep its bid for a Grand Slam alive.
Meanwhile, several other players are still overseas. Justin Brownlee and AJ Edu expected to arrive soon from the United States while Kevin Quiambao and Carl Tamayo are currently in the US and South Korea, respectively.
"Like I said, I don't even know who's showing up at this point. We're grasping at straws just like we did tonight in terms of trying to figure out how to get practices," Cone added.
"But if we can get a core of six or seven or eight guys, that would be good for now."
Gilas is in Group D of the Asia Cup alongside New Zealand, Iraq, and Chinese Taipei.

Gilas Pilipinas Women fall short in comeback vs. New Zealand to finish 6th in FIBA Asia Cup
Gilas Pilipinas Women crawled back from 16 points down, but collapsed late to absorb a 71-78 loss to world no. 26 New Zealand and close out their 2025 FIBA Asia Cup campaign on Saturday in Shenzhen Sports Centre, China. The Filipinas turned it up in the second half by waxing hot from downtown before losing steam in the final minutes, no thanks to a pivotal 17-5 closing rampage from New Zealand. Gilas Women will finish sixth in the eight-team field to match their output from the previous edition. The loss also denied the Philippines its best finish since getting a Division A promotion in 2015. In three editions from 2017 to 2021, the Philippines wound up seventh in the Asia Cup before clinching a sixth-place finish in the 2023 edition held in Australia. Vanessa de Jesus was among the bright spots for Gilas after finishing with a team-high 16 points laced with four rebounds and four assists while Khate Castillo posted 14 markers on 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Youngsters Naomi Panganiban and Sumayah Sugapong both chipped in 11 points while Jack Animam poured nine markers, eight rebounds, four assists, four steals, and four blocks. Despite the loss, it was still an impressive showing for the Filipinas against a higher-ranked New Zealand. After finding themselves once down by 16 at one point in the second quarter, 15-31, the gritty Filipinas turned to De Jesus, Castillo and Sugapong, all of whom connived to help Gilas cut the deficit to just four at halftime, 38-42. Kent Pastrana and Sugapong buried back-to-back triples as they forced a 53-all deadlock in the third before Animam and Castillo combined for three free throws to close out the frame ahead by three. Castillo continued to knock down three-pointers, nailing a pair from downtown to give the Philippines a 66-61 cushion. But Gilas just ran out of gas in the endgame with Emilia Shearer and Esra McGoldrick conspiring to power New Zealand's 17-5 closing rampage en route to the six-point victory. McGoldrick tallied 17 points together with seven rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and one steal while Shearer grabbed 16 markers, six boards, four dimes, and one block. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Haeran Lee and Yoolim Kang led the Koreans with 24 and 21 points, respectively, while Jihyun Park and Jisun Park added 15 and 14 points, respectively. What's next for Alex Eala after Wimbledon?
Tennis - Wimbledon - All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, London, Britain - July 1, 2025 Philippines' Alexandra Eala reacts during her first round match against Czech Republic's Barbora Krejcikova Photo: REUTERS/Toby Melville Alex Eala recently made history as she had her first WTA Tour finals stint in the Eastbourne Open and made her Wimbledon debut afterwards. In Eastbourne, Eala fell short against Maya Joint for the crown, while she had first round exits in both singles and doubles tournaments of Wimbledon. But after achieving major feats in the past few months, including a dream run in the Miami Open last March and reaching her career-high ranking at no. 56 after the Eastbourne Open, the grind does not stop yet for Eala. According to Eala, she will head to North America for tournaments in Montreal in Canada, Cincinnati in the United States, and Monterrey in Mexico. After that, she will head to New York for the US Open. "After that, like I said, we shift to Asia. So, there will be a few around China. I know there's one in Hong Kong in October. And, yeah, around, you know, closer to home. So, if anyone wants to come," Eala said in a meet and greet event organized by Globe. While she has been competing left and right in major tournaments, Eala said she still dreams of winning her first Grand Slam win. "There's still a lot for me to achieve, I think. There are a lot of big tournaments lined up, not just the US Open, so I hope to play well there and of course try to get my first Grand Slam win." —JKC, GMA Integrated News
