UK Retailers Demand Return of Tax-Free Shopping in Tourism Plan
Making purchases exempt from VAT could result in £3.65 billion ($4.9 billion) of additional spending by visitors from the European Union, the Association of International Retail said in a submission to ministers published Tuesday. That's on top of about £1.5 billion of spending by non-EU visitors the lobby group said was diverted from the UK when it scrapped tax-free shopping in 2021.

Empty shop up for sale after business closes down
A former flower shop which closed its doors earlier this year has now been put up for sale. Floral Design, located on Whitehouse Road, had been a staple Swindon business for 25 years. The independent florist offered flowers for all occasions, including sympathy tributes, wedding flowers and new born baby bouquets, and held workshops to teach others the basics of floristry. However, in March 2025, Floral Design announced it would be closing its doors for the last time on March 30, as owner Sandie Eustace decided it was time to move on to something new. "I am a people person and without the customer interaction, I lost my love for the job." "The premises has scope for an array of businesses which could also include food and takeaway due to its location." The estate agents also say the building has the potential for "various applications including potential to convert into residential." While the prospect of new life coming to the empty building is exciting, for many residents it also marks the loss of a well-loved business. Reacting to the news of the closure, one commenter said: "The end of an era for sure. "Thank you for the friendship and beautiful flowers for my most important life events." Another added: "Thank you for our wedding flowers 13 years ago and recently our two beautiful bouquets."

Former teacher who created award to showcase inspirational women honoured
The Bolton woman who created an awards ceremony 10 years ago has herself been given a national award by the Daily Mail for her inspiration. Gulnaz Brennan, a former teacher living in Blackrod, is well known as the driving force behind the annual SheInspires Awards. These recognise outstanding females locally, nationally and internationally. The Daily Mail asked its readers to nominate women across the country who 'go the extra mile for other people' and selected five to become Inspirational Women of the Year. Gulnaz won her award for her campaign to help women take greater control of their finances and their lives. The paper described how it was the realization that many of her friends let their partners control their finances that 'lit the feminist fire in her". "Another discovered after her relationship broke down that her ex had taken a loan out in her name. 'Saddled with his debt, she faced losing her home. It was heartbreaking.' She felt that 'too many women are ignorant about finances and uncomfortable talking about money, but it's vital to stay in charge of our finances and not let anyone – even a partner – take over". Gulnaz started her campaign Let's Talk Money and now runs monthly seminars, podcasts, webinars and networking events, helping thousands of women.
