There was concern for Bellew as he was helped off the pitch
Tony Bellew had to be helped off the pitch as he was forced off with a nasty looking injury just moments into Soccer Aid at Old Trafford.
The former boxing world champion was named in the starting lineup for the World XI as they took on England in the annual charity match, but his evening was cut short as he limped off after six minutes on the field. Bellew looked in a great deal of discomfort as he was helped off the pitch, having signalled for help from his side's physio team.

It is unclear whether Bellew was injured in a tackle or not, but he struggled to walk as he left the field at the Theatre of Dreams.

However, it was later revealed by commentator Sam Matterface that the Liverpudlian had reportedly told the medical team that "something went bang and I heard it go".
On hearing the news, co-commentator Jason Manford added: "That's not good".
Ahead of the match, Harry Redknapp had given a concerning injury update about Bellew, saying he had suffered a groin injury in training.

"We give up our time, free of charge, and come and enjoy it to raise as much money as we can," Redknapp told Jane Garvey and Fi Glover on the Off Air podcast.
"Tony Bellew, ex-world champion, he's just decided to boot a ball without even warming up and just tore his groin.
"He's so tough he'll probably play on with it."

After his early departure, Bellew was replaced by Strictly Come Dancing professional Gorka Marquez.
It came moments after Wayne Rooney opened the scoring for England on his return to Old Trafford, with the Manchester United legend pouncing on a loose ball to turn it past former teammate Edwin van der Sar.
It was the fastest ever goal in Soccer Aid history, coming after just four minutes.

Despite Bellew being born in Liverpool, he was representing the World XI for the second year running - with the exact reason still unclear.
His teammates this year include football legends Rivaldo, David Trezeguet and Nemanja Vidic, as well as the likes of Asim Chaudhry, Richard Gadd and Maisie Adam.
They are up against an England side containing ex-professionals Paul Scholes, Jack Wilshere and Rooney, as well as famous faces like Louis Tomlinson, Bella Ramsey and Alex Brooker.

Refs could wear body cameras in Premier League this season after IFAB approval

The technology is likely to feature in next summer's World Cup and it is understood it could also be offered to broadcasters as part of the Premier League's new domestic television deal. Clubs will need to approve precisely when and how the cameras are used in the coming weeks, but the league has already shown a willingness to innovate in this area, with referee Jarred Gillett wearing a camera during a Premier League match between Crystal Palace and Manchester United in May last year. Jarred Gillett wore a camera during a Premier League match between Crystal Palace and Manchester United in May last year (Zac Goodwin/PA) The purpose of the trial at the Club World Cup was to see whether it enriched the viewing experience by providing footage from the referee's perspective. Pierluigi Collina, the chairman of FIFA's referees committee, hailed the success of the cameras and said the trial had gone 'beyond expectations'. It therefore seems extremely likely world football's governing body will want to use the cameras in its showpiece national-team tournament next summer. 'We thought it would have been an interesting experience for TV viewers and we've received great comments,' Collina told earlier this month. 'We were asked, 'Why not in all the matches?' and even more, 'Why not in all sports?'. 🎥 The best ref cam moments of the #FIFACWC so far… — FIFA Club World Cup (@FIFACWC) June 27, 2025 'We had the possibility to see what the referee sees on the field of play. And this was not only for entertainment purposes, but also for coaching the referees (and) to explain why something was not seen on the field of play.' The cameras highlighted how a handball by an Atletico Madrid defender in their match against Paris St Germain could not be given on-field by the referee because his line of vision was blocked, with the VAR able to alert the official. Competitions wishing to participate in the extended trial will need to seek permission from the IFAB and from FIFA, who will provide detailed recommendations and technical information to help them use the technology effectively. Other enhancements to the Premier League television experience this season include dressing-room access, half-time interviews and in-match interviews with managers or substituted players.

Man Utd make final Benjamin Sesko and Ollie Watkins decision as transfer 'accelerates'

Benjamin Sesko has moved above Ollie Watkins in Manchester United's pecking order as they look to add the RB Leipzig striker to their squad ahead of the new season Benjamin Sesko has moved to the top of Manchester United's wish-list as they look to add the striker to their ranks. The Red Devils have already signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves and Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo, but Ruben Amorim is open to adding more firepower to his side following the club's dire 2024/25 campaign. ‌ The highly rated Sesko looks set to move on after Leipzig missed out on Champions League football. United will be absent from European football completely this season, but that is not thought to have put the Slovenian off. ‌ Sesko is reportedly favouring a move to Old Trafford over Newcastle, who are also in the market for a top forward, with Liverpool-linked Alexander Isak angling for a move away from Tyneside. According to The Athletic, Sesko is Man United's priority if they go for another striker this summer and they are said to have made 'informal' contact with Leipzig. ‌ The Red Devils are also admirers of Ollie Watkins, although Aston Villa have insisted the 29-year-old is not for sale. A move for Sesko looks more realistic, with United also favouring a player of potential over a proven quality like Watkins. United have been linked with Sesko in the past, but they balked at paying his previous club, RB Salzburg, around £2m in 2019. He will now cost many times more after emerging as one of the most promising strikers in Europe, scoring 39 goals in 87 appearances for Leipzig since his arrival in 2023. ‌ His current contract runs until 2029, having only signed a new deal last year. It reportedly came with an understanding that he would be allowed to depart if another club offered in the region of £69m to £78m. Untied's signings will need to be offset by some outgoings, with a number of players declaring their desire to leave the club. Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia were left out of the tour of the United States, with the so-called 'bomb squad' training at the club's Carrington complex. Marcus Rashford has joined Barcelona on loan. United's transfer dealings have been widely criticised in recent seasons but Amorim has said chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Jason Wilcox would not be taken advantage of just to get rid of those surplus to requirements.

Gary Neville gives verdict on Man Utd's £133.5m summer transfer spending

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has shared his thoughts on the club's transfer business so far this summer, with Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo joining in big money deals Gary Neville has hailed Manchester United's transfer business this summer, but warned there are still two problem areas they need to strengthen. United have spent big on Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, forking out around £133.5million on the two attackers. ‌ United struggled for goals last season, with only Everton and the three relegated sides managing less Premier League goals than their 44. But the additions of Cunha and Mbeumo should provide a major boost having notched 35 between them. ‌ Marcus Rashford has also joined Barcelona on loan after being frozen out by manager Ruben Amorim, who is also keen to offload the likes of Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia after deeming them surplus to requirements. ‌ And Neville believes United's moves so far are a good sign ahead of next season - although he would like to see the club sign a new goalkeeper and a new striker before the transfer window slams shut. " Manchester United over the last ten or 11 years have accepted a position whereby they've made mistakes in the transfer market or in recruitment or they've held onto players too long," Neville told Sky Sports. "It would seem that what's happening now is Ruben Amorim is identifying players he does not want in the squad and he's moving them out. That's a positive and on paper I do like the signings of Cunha and Mbeumo. "Why do I like them? They've got Premier League experience, they look more like Manchester United styles of players with a bit more pace and power and the physicality to get from box to box quickly. "I think when you look at Garnacho, Sancho and Antony are more jinkers, more people who work in tight spaces. I've always felt that United need players that can open their legs up and really stretch teams and I think Cunha and Mbeumo do that. "The other thing I like about those two signings is they've not proved themselves at the highest level yet in respect of Premier League club level or European club level so they should be really desperate and hungry to prove themselves on a huge stage, which is Old Trafford. ‌ "That hunger hasn't always been there in the last ten years with players that have come to the club. They've maybe been the more finished article and we've got excited by them, but maybe they haven't had that desperation. "I always feel like a player needs hunger, they need desperation in the game to feel that it's the most important thing and I think these two lads that have signed will have that. I think the two signings are good signings. "There's a couple more needed. I think they need a goalkeeper and a centre forward and if they can fill those two positions with decent signings then United can have... I mean they have to have a better season than last year. It can't get any worse."
