Iran says remains committed to nuclear non-proliferation treaty

Business Recorder15 hours ago
TEHRAN: Iran on Thursday affirmed its commitment to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, as it accused Germany of 'malice' over its criticism of Tehran's decision to suspend cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog.
'Iran remains committed to the NPT (Non-Proliferation Treaty) and its Safeguards Agreement,' Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in a post on X.
'The explicit German support for the bombing of Iran has obliterated the notion that the German regime harbors anything but malice towards Iranians,' he added in response to a German foreign office post criticising the move.

Afghan refugees stuck in Pakistan

Kimia, 25, an Afghan journalist and artist, speaks with Reuters at a guest house where she is living, in Islamabad. Photo: REUTERS Listen to article In a cramped guesthouse in Islamabad, 25-year-old Kimia spends her days sketching women — dancing, playing, resisting — in a notebook that holds what's left of her hopes. A visual artist and women's rights advocate, she fled Afghanistan in 2024 after being accepted on to a German humanitarian admission program aimed at Afghans considered at risk under the Taliban. A year later, Kimia is stuck in limbo. Thousands of kilometres away in Germany, an election in February where migration dominated public debate and a change of government in May resulted in the gradual suspension of the programme. Now the new centre-right coalition intends to close it. The situation echoes that of nearly 1,660 Afghans cleared to settle in the United States, but who then found themselves in limbo in January after US President Donald Trump took office and suspended refugee programmes. Kimia's interview at the German embassy which she hoped would result in a flight to the country and the right to live there, was abruptly cancelled in April. Meanwhile, Germany pays for her room, meals and medical care in Islamabad. "All my life comes down to this interview," she told Reuters. She gave only her artist name for fear of reprisal. "We just want to find a place that is calm and safe," she said of herself and the other women at the guesthouse. The admission programme began in October 2022, intending to bring up to 1,000 Afghans per month to Germany who were deemed at risk because of their work in human rights, justice, politics or education, or due to their gender, religion or sexual orientation. However, fewer than 1,600 arrived in over two years due to holdups and the cancellation of flights. Today, around 2,400 Afghans are waiting to travel to Germany, the German foreign ministry said. Whether they will is unclear. NGOs say 17,000 more are in the early stages of selection and application under the now dormant scheme. The foreign ministry said entry to Germany through the program was suspended pending a government review, and the government will continue to care for and house those already in the program.

Iran FM says committed to NPT

Iran remains committed to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and its safeguards agreement, Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on Thursday, a day after Tehran enacted a law suspending cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog. "Our cooperation with the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) will be channeled through Iran's Supreme National Security Council for obvious safety and security reasons," Araqchi wrote in a post on X. President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday enacted the legislation passed by parliament last week to suspend cooperation with the IAEA, a move the US called "unacceptable." Araqchi's comment on X was in response to a call from Germany's Foreign Ministry urging Tehran to reverse its decision to shelve cooperation with the IAEA. Araqchi accused Germany of "explicit support for Israel's unlawful attack on Iran, including safeguarded nuclear sites". Iran has accused the IAEA of siding with Western countries and providing a justification for Israel's June 13-24 airstrikes on Iranian nuclear installations, which began a day after the UN agency's board of governors voted to declare Tehran in violation of its obligations under the NPT. Western powers have long suspected that Iran has sought to develop the means to build atomic bombs through its declared civilian atomic energy programme. Iran has repeatedly said it is enriching uranium only for peaceful nuclear ends. IAEA inspectors are mandated to ensure compliance with the NPT by seeking to verify that nuclear programmes in treaty countries are not diverted for military purposes.

Ministry officials held in plot scam

The FIA Anti-Corruption Circle Islamabad has arrested three officers from the Ministry of Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan Affairs in connection with the illegal allotment and alleged tampering of records and registries of plots allocated for Kashmiri refugees in Jhelum. The teams are also conducting raids to apprehend the involved officials from the Punjab Revenue Department. According to authorities, the arrests stem from findings in FIA Anti-Corruption Inquiry No. 111/23, which revealed that plots were initially allotted to Kashmiri refugees in Rathian Colony, Jhelum, by the Ministry of Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan Affairs. These plots were meant exclusively for Kashmiri refugees as per the original allotment deed. However, the inquiry uncovered that, in violation of the original deed, illegal transfers and registries were carried out with the alleged collusion of Punjab Revenue Department staff, transferring the plots to unauthorised individuals. The Ministry of Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan Affairs confirmed that no formal approval had been obtained from the federal government for these transfers. Furthermore, illegal registries were executed in favour of non-Kashmiri refugees through the office of the Sub-Registrar in Dina, District Jhelum, via unlawful registration of transfer deeds. Following the completion of the inquiry, an FIR was lodged against officials, including Assistant Administrative Officer-II, Nasir Hayat, Assistant Administrative Officer-III, Maqsood Ahmed and then Jhelum Revenue Officer/Tehsildar Nadeem Barth, as well as former Tehsildar Sheikh Jameel. A couple of days before, a team led by Deputy Director Afzal Khan Niazi of the FIA Anti-Corruption Circle arrested three officials from the Ministry of Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan Affairs, Administrative Officer-II, Nasir Hayat, Administrative Officer-III, Maqsood Ahmed, Assistant Accounts Officer, Abdullah Khan. The teams are conducting raids to arrest the remaining accused.
