2 sentenced to death for rape, murder of 8-yr-old girl

Time of India31-05-2025
Madhubani: A special court in Madhubani on Saturday sentenced two men, Sushil Rai and Om Prakash Jha, to death for the gangrape and murder of an eight-year-old dalit girl.
Syed Mohammad Fazlul Bari, special judge for SC/ST cases and additional district and sessions judge, delivered the verdict after hearing arguments from both the prosecution and the defence.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1.55 lakh on each convict under various legal provisions.
The brutal crime occurred on June 22, 2023 in a village under Jaynagar police station in Madhubani district.
Special public prosecutor Sapan Kumar Singh described the case as the "rarest of the rare" and urged the court to impose the death penalty. Defence counsel Amit Kumar argued in favour of the accused, but the court upheld the prosecution's plea for capital punishment.
According to the prosecution, the child was alone at home while her family members were at work when the accused lured her to Jaynagar market under the pretext of buying food. They then took her to a room in Koshi Colony, where they sexually assaulted her. When she screamed, they strangled her with a gamchha (towel) and inflicted multiple injuries on her head and body.
Police arrested the accused the following day. During interrogation, the duo led officers to the victim's body, which had been concealed under asbestos sheets in an abandoned building.

10 industrial units penalised for violating pollution norms, one discharged carcinogenic waste into Yamuna, NGT told

Ten industrial units found violating environmental norms in the residential areas in East Delhi have been penalised for causing pollution, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has told the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The DPCC issued Environmental Compensation (EC) orders against all 10 defaulting units, the NGT was told. One of these units was allegedly discharging 'highly toxic and carcinogenic' effluents into the Yamuna. The action comes in response to a plea being heard by the NGT that alleged unauthorised operation by these units. According to the plea, filed by a Delhi resident, Varun Gulati, last year, illegal 'red-category' industries – such as electoplating and metal processing — were operating in densely populated residential areas. A joint committee comprising officials from the DPCC, Revenue department, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Delhi Police, and BSES conducted surprise inspections in April last year. As per the DPCC's submission on Wednesday, a total of 36 units were surveyed, and inspections were held again for nine of the 36 units. Eleven showcause notices were issued, and Environmental Compensation was finally imposed on 10 units. Among the most serious violations was an electroplating unit operating without any pollution control device, which was found to be discharging untreated wastewater into drains leading to the Yamuna. The DPCC said the waste was 'highly toxic and carcinogenic in nature,' and the unit was sealed after a fine of ₹10 lakh was imposed. In another case, a powder-coating unit in Ghonda was found non-operational, but it was still storing machinery and coloured powder. The MCD sealed the premises, and the DPCC imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh. Here is a list of other units penalised: > An illegal godown for aluminium hardware in Bhajanpura (EC: Rs 40,000) > A garment and bag stitching unit in Bhajanpura (EC: Rs 40,000) > A hanger manufacturing unit using metal wire in Village Gamri (EC: Rs 40,000) > A paper roll and paper cup godown in Gamri (EC: Rs 40,000) > A cloth bag stitching and screen-printing unit (orange-category industry) in Gamri (EC: Rs 5 lakh) > A metal surface finishing unit in Gamri (EC: Rs 40,000) > A red-category electroplating unit in Gamri, where the first floor was sealed (EC: Rs 10 lakh) > An injection-moulding unit involved in waste plastic reprocessing without washing (EC: Rs 5 lakh) The DPCC said that enforcement action in such residential non-conforming areas falls under the jurisdiction of the Zonal Deputy Commissioners of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), in line with a 2019 Supreme Court order.

ATS probes Maharashtra outfit's role in Chhangur Baba's conversion racket

1 2 3 Lucknow: Chhangur Baba, the key accused in high-profile religious conversion syndicate, was the Uttar Pradesh president of Bharat Pratikaar Sangh, a little-known outfit reportedly founded in Nagpur, Maharashtra. The Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), which is now expanding its probe into the group's cross-state network, believes the organisation may have served as a front for channelling foreign funds and executing illegal conversions. An ATS team led by a deputy superintendent of police is currently in Maharashtra to examine financial trails, land records and ownership patterns linked to the organisation. The team is coordinating with Maharashtra Police and is expected to visit both Nagpur and Pune, where properties worth over ₹100 crore, allegedly linked to the Chhangur network, are under the scanner. Documents suggest that the sangh portrayed itself as a nationalist organisation, with letterheads featuring photos of prominent Indian leaders. One such document lists Idul Islam as the national general secretary, with a registered address in Nagpur. Investigators are probing whether the organisation had any genuine ideological base or was created to mask financial irregularities, benami property deals and religious conversion operations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo Among the questionable deals is a land transaction in Pune. The agreement reportedly involved Sangita Devi, wife of a court clerk in Balrampur, as a beneficiary in a profit-sharing contract, raising red flags about deeper bureaucratic complicity. The ATS suspects that several properties were acquired or encroached upon through fraudulent means using funds routed via individuals connected to the sangh. Investigators are also verifying whether converted individuals were moved across states and housed in these properties as part of a larger indoctrination or laundering setup. Chhangur Baba and his close aide Neetu alias Nasreen, who were arrested from Balrampur on July 5, completed their seven-day ATS custody remand on Wednesday. During interrogation, the duo was questioned on the network's financial architecture, property acquisitions and conversion methods used to target vulnerable individuals. Both have now been sent to Lucknow jail. When confronted by reporters, Chhangur Baba claimed he was "being framed". Earlier this month, the Balrampur administration had demolished Chhangur Baba's palatial residence in Utraula, estimated to be worth over Rs 3 crore. ATS teams are now identifying other properties linked to the syndicate across UP and Maharashtra.
