Ishaan Khatter Says 'Film Festivals Were My Education' As He Recalls Watching 6 Films A Day
Last Updated:
Ishaan Khatter recalls watching 6 films a day at festivals, calling them his film school, and reflects on the dream come true of walking the red carpet at Cannes.
Before the flashing cameras and red-carpet appearances, Ishaan Khatter was just another young cinephile, quietly soaking in the magic of cinema from the dark corners of festival theatres. Today, as he stands tall among Bollywood's promising new generation, Khatter attributes much of his growth not just to film sets, but to the formative hours he spent watching world cinema—sometimes six films a day.
'Film festivals were my education," Ishaan says, recalling a time when his love for cinema was his only compass. 'For three years, I went to as many festivals as I could and watched as many films as possible. My record was six movies in one day. I was a learning glutton." Where most people saw films as entertainment, Ishaan devoured them as study material, immersing himself in stories, styles, and storytelling across languages and cultures.
This deep engagement with cinema eventually bore fruit in the most poetic way—at the Cannes Film Festival, the ultimate celebration of global filmmaking. Ishaan walked the red carpet not as a fan or aspiring artist, but as someone who had earned his place on the screen and among storytellers he long admired. 'Cannes is the place to be, it's the holy grail," he shared. 'I always dreamed of going there with my own film, and it really felt like that dream came true. I was there with a team I love and admire."
Ishaan Khatter, who recently received a lot of appreciation for his role in The Royals, is now waiting for the release of his next film, Homebound. The film, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, also stars Janhvi Kapoor and Vishal Jethwa. Meanwhile, Shahid Kapoor is busy shooting for Vishal Bhardwaj's Arjun Ustara, alongside Triptii Dimri, Nana Patekar and Randeep Hooda. He will also be seen in Cocktail 2 with Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna. After that, he will return for Farzi Season 2, which also stars Vijay Sethupathi, Kay Kay Menon and Raashii Khanna.

Just like Masaan, the beauty of Homebound is how uncomfortable it could be as a watch. It's a film that chronicles the struggles and sorrows of two men, their shattered and unfulfilled dreams, caste differences, and undying passion for what they aspire for. The film sheds light on the lives of Shoaib (Ishaan Khatter), a Muslim, and Chandan (Vishal Jethwa), a Dalit, how they aspire to be police trainees and how destiny shackles their spirit. The film is set in a small North Indian village. The wave at Cannes 2025 Ghaywan re-shared a series of pictures from the red carpet with the cast and crew, along with a picture with Hollywood filmmaker Spike Lee on Instagram. 'Chatted with @officialspikelee! Do The Right Thing, Malcolm X and Blackkklansman have been a huge inspiration to me. His oeuvre is a lesson in talking about oppression through cinema. More power to you, sir!' he wrote. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

Emma Stone praises Austin Butler's quick thinking during viral bee encounter at Cannes: 'He is a sweetheart'
Emma Stone has come to the defence of her 'Eddington' co-star Austin Butler after a viral incident involving a bee on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet. In a clip shared on social media, Butler was seen trying to shoo away a bee that flew into the shot while the pair were posing for photos. Despite some speculation that Butler may have inadvertently directed the bee towards Stone, the actress clarified on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' that this was not the case. "He was trying to blow it behind me!" she explained, adding, "He is a sweetheart and a half--there is no way he wanted that bee in my face." Stone even jokingly suggested that her other costar, Pedro Pascal , might have been responsible for the bee's appearance, saying, "I almost guarantee you, if anyone brought the bee, it was Pedro. He probably unleashed that bee." However, she quickly added that Pascal is "so wonderful," emphasising the friendly dynamic between the cast members. Stone's defence of Butler is consistent with her previous comments about her positive relationships with her male co-stars. As per E! News, in a 2017 interview, she highlighted their willingness to take pay cuts to ensure she received equal pay, noting that "women, in general, are making four fifths at best."
