Will Joe Root Break Tendulkar's Record? Jos Buttler Says: 'He Won't Wake Up In...'
Jos Buttler has weighed in on whether Joe Root can beat Sachin Tendulkar's 12-year-old record of 15,921 Test runs, saying that it was 'quite attainable' if he can remain fit. Buttler explained that Root was not only hungry for runs, but he was also not focused on 'hunting down' the record, which allowed him to be not distracted.
Root jumped from fifth to second in the most recent Test against India at Old Trafford and now has 13,409 runs. A CricViz estimate said that if he can maintain the pace of the last two years, it would take him around 29 Tests to go past Tendulkar, which could be anything between two to three years. Root is still 34 and only needs to contend with depleting reflexes (no signs of that have been visible yet) to realistically get there.
'He's not hunting down Sachin Tendulkar because that's definitely not the way he plays his cricket or how he sees it," Buttler said in a podcast with former teammate, Stuart Broad. 'But he is number two on an incredibly elite list, with what seems like—if he stays fit—quite an attainable kind of thing, which is absolutely mind-blowing. He has got 21 hundreds since COVID. He is obviously in the form of his life and it is awesome to watch," he added.
Broad asked him if he has ever thought that Root won't be able to do it?
Buttler replied: 'It might just be a bit more in his favour."
'Hunger is never an issue I see with Root. He isn't going to wake up in 2-3 years and think he doesn't have the love for batting or playing for England. He has just been playing so well, even during that period when England won one game in 17 and he was captain. But he just doesn't see it like that at all. Which I think is the great thing about him. He just loves playing and winning matches. So it's going to be pretty cool to watch whether he stays at No. 2 or scales that Everest and goes to No. 1," he added.

Team India's Next Match: When Will Men In Blue Be Back In Action After Oval Win?
Last Updated: After a thrilling 2-2 draw against England, when will India men play their next international match? Find out here. The India-England series can be described with many adjectives: exciting, historical, unforgettable, but also exhausting. For the first time in eight years, we saw a five-test series with all matches going to the last day. Many players got injured in the sheer weight of their increased workloads, and Mohammed Siraj was the only fast bowler to bowl in all the innings available to his team. For players, coaches, and staff, they'll need a huge, well-deserved break to get over the euphoria, adrenaline and perhaps some mixed feelings about the 2-2. However, the consequence of winning like that is that fans can't get enough of you. Soon after the series ended, questions were being asked on social media about when the Indian men's team would play next. The answer is not straightforward. If you go by the official books, India's next match would be against the UAE on September 10 in the 2025 Asia Cup in the T20 format. They'll then play Pakistan on September 14 and Oman on September 19, hoping to qualify in the top two of their group stage to reach the Super-Four stage. The best two in the latter will then go on to play the final. That means fans will have to wait around five weeks to see some action. However, the team was also supposed to go to Bangladesh this month for a white-ball tour with three ODIs and as many T20Is. However, owing to tensions between the two countries' political regimes, that tour now stands postponed indefinitely. The official reason mentioned by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) was different. 'This decision has been reached following discussions between the two Boards, taking into account the international cricketing commitments and scheduling convenience of both teams," the release read. 'The BCB looks forward to welcoming India in September 2026 for this eagerly anticipated series. Revised dates and fixtures for the tour will be announced in due course," it added. Now, there have been reports claiming that the Bangladesh tour could be replaced by a trip to Sri Lanka. Media in the island nation have also cited 'optimism' that such a tour would go ahead. However, it is yet to be confirmed, and time is running out to arrange all logistics. Get latest Cricket news, live score and match results on News18. Mohammedan SC at bottom with fifth straight loss
Kolkata: Merely a couple of seasons ago, Mohammedan SC were looking a whole different beast, having emerged as the team to beat in local league in the post-Covid times with a hat-trick of Calcutta Football League titles. That period of domination now seems to be too fleeting to be true as Mohammedan SC, instead of fighting for the championship, are increasingly facing the possibility of finding themselves in a battle for survival in the 2025-2026 season of the CFL. The latest setback in their woeful start to the season came in the form of a 0-1 defeat former champions Peerless SC at the Naihati stadium on Monday. Manoranjan Singh struck the all-important goal in the 60th minute for Peerless. R Ashwin Lauds 'Miyaan Bhai' After Match-Winning Spell: 'Real Instrument For...'
Last Updated: Ashwin praises Siraj for his transformation and crucial role in India's thrilling win against England. Ace India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has said that one should celebrate Mohammed Siraj on the day and his transformation from believing in ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah to believing in himself and taking India to a series-levelling, thrilling win against England is commendable. Siraj took a match haul of 9/190 to help India bowl the hosts out twice in the game and clinch a thrilling six-run win over England on Monday. Set a record target of 374, England looked poised for a win against India at 339/6 at stumps on the penultimate day. However, India produced a spirited comeback on the final morning, picking up the remaining four wickets to bowl the hosts out for 367 and level the five-match series 2-2. 'What an absolute riveting Test. Full props to India, against all odds, India have come back and levelled the series. I want to say that this game has been topsy-turvy, series has also been topsy-turvy. All things aside, for today, let us celebrate Mohammed Siraj," Ashwin said while speaking on his YouTube channel. 'With 22 (23) wickets, he's the leader of the bowling charts. What made me so happy with what happened with Siraj is that when we won the T20 World Cup, he wore a bib and praised Jasprit Bumrah," Ashwin said. 'But today it wasn't Jassi bhai, but Miyan bhai, who was the real instrument for India to level the series," Ashwin added. The former Indian cricketer further emphasised the importance of Siraj to the Indian bowling attack. Ashwin said that the pacer was getting older and needed to be given breaks in between to lead a transitioning attack in the coming years. 'He's reminding us of what a champion bowler he is, his bowling action and his running technique in his run-up and his nice finish towards the end, his good work ethic is allowing him to play all the Tests of a series, even if it is five Tests. It is time we recognised that," Ashwin said. 'He's getting on in age and it is very important as an Indian team management that we rest him as well from inconsequential matches that we play after this, because he could be your number one Test bowler, go-to Test bowler around which you build the rest of your bowling attack," Ashwin added. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
