A Pasta Salad in Grain Salad's Clothing

A Pasta Salad in Grain Salad's Clothing

New York Times29-05-2025

On Saturday, I arose to a holiday weekend rarity: no plans, no responsibilities.
With nowhere to be and no one to see, I did my best to revel in the boredom. I made a laborious green juice. I toasted some sourdough and soft-scrambled some eggs. I lit a candle. I threw on a record. Perhaps I'd meander to the farmers' market, I told a friend similarly enjoying what she called a 'Saturday of nothingness.'
It had been longer than I'd like to admit since I last perused the stalls. Rhubarb! Strawberries! Green onions tall enough to bypass a Hinge height filter! In a trance, I scooped up some snap peas, a bunch of radishes, a bridal bouquet's worth of mint. Much like my weekend, I had no plans for any of it.
Then I saw Hetty Lui McKinnon's new herby pearl couscous and sugar snap pea salad, which would make quick use of much of my bounty. It's a pasta salad with grain-salad sensibilities, a distant, springy relative of tabbouleh. You know, the 'our dads are best friends' kind of cousin. Snap peas, mint, parsley and plenty of lemon lend layers of bright flavor, and a little unexpected warmth from allspice keeps things balanced.
View this recipe.
But I bought far more snap peas and mint than any one recipe should call for. I always enjoy my snap peas raw, or simply blanched, but the tender, nearly caramelized vegetables in this crispy baked tofu from Melissa Clark make a compelling case for letting them hang out in a 400 degree oven for half an hour.

Zeke Cohen calls for Baltimore City Council hearing on behavioral crisis response

Baltimore City Council President Zeke Cohen wants the city to take a closer look at behavioral health crisis response issues by adding another hearing to the council's busy oversight schedule this summer. Cohen's request comes after three people experiencing behavioral health crises died in an eight-day period this month. June 17: Bilal Yusuf-Muhammad 'B.J.' Abdullah Jr, 36, was shot and killed after exchanging gunfire with Baltimore Police Department officers near the Upton subway station. June 24: An unidentified man approached a police cruiser stopped at West Franklin Street and North Franklintown Road and walked repeatedly into the middle of the road. An officer tried to restrain the man and called for EMS, but the man became unresponsive before they arrived and died at a hospital hours later, according to the Maryland Office of the Attorney General. June 25: Police shot and killed Pytorcarcha Brooks, 70, on Mosher Street. Police said Brooks brandished a knife and lunged at one officer before another officer at the scene fired his weapon. 'These tragedies are a heartbreaking reminder that far too many Baltimoreans suffer in silence,' Cohen said in a statement Friday.'Today I am calling for a hearing in the City Council's Public Safety Committee to examine our behavioral health crisis response systems.' Councilman Mark Conway, who chairs the Public Safety Committee, has sought to hold council hearings on the city's opioid crisis — an epidemic with clear ties to the behavioral health challenges facing Baltimore. The council's upcoming schedule includes hearings related to the opioid crisis on July 9 and July 16, but they will be taken up by the Public Health & Environment Committee. Conway's advocacy on the opioid crisis put him at odds with Mayor Brandon Scott, who argued earlier this year that holding public hearings would jeopardize Baltimore's ongoing legal efforts to hold pharmaceutical companies responsible for distributing drugs in the city. The city has already secured more than $400 million in settlements, though a judge ruled that jurors last November awarded Baltimore 'grossly excessive' compensation from pharmaceutical titans McKesson and AmerisourceBergen. This case remains ongoing and could be headed for a retrial if the city does not accept the decision that reduced jurors' original verdict by more than $200 million. Other notable oversight hearings on the council's upcoming schedule include transportation (July 10), crime reduction/violence prevention (July 15), psychiatric rehabilitation programs (July 23), and recovery homes/substance abuse clinics (July 30). Millie Bobby Brown Shows Off Her Tan Lines in an Itty Bitty String Bikini

Millie Bobby Brown paired her newly-dyed brunette hair with the tiniest string bikini on Friday, June 27. The Stranger Things star showed off her visible tan lines in the barely-there cottagecore style. She also gave fans a glimpse of her behind-the-scenes filming of Enola Holmes Bobby Brown made a stylish case for cottagecore swimwear as she enjoyed a beach day on Friday, June 27. In addition to giving fans a glimpse at her newly-dyed brunette hair—a major departure from the bleach-blonde style she's been sporting in recent months—the Stranger Things actress stripped down to the tiniest string bikini in a nostalgic print. Brown served up vacation style inspo in the golden hour bikini shoot, which showed her modeling a barely-there two-piece paisley swimsuit by the water. Posing with her hands on her forehead, the sunkissed star ensured her bikini body and visible tan lines were front and center in a blue floral patterned suit with white lace trimming her triangle bikini cups and the low-cut waistband of her tiny string bikini bottoms. In addition to embroidered crochet detailing on her barely-there bikini top, Brown's swimsuit also featured green beading in the front paired with a large vintage-inspired bronze pendant dangling down her toned midriff. The Electric State actress added some extra shine for her beachside photoshoot with a silver pearl choker, gold hoop earrings, and a pair of tortoiseshell aviator sunglasses. Brown kept her beauty simple, showing off a bronzed complexion, flushed cheeks, and a rosy pout. Fresh off her recent return to her natural brown hair, the British star pulled her dark locks back into a sleek wet bun. It was a contrasting style to a Bridgerton-coded updo she shared in a separate Instagram post on Friday. Brown paired a green sleeveless crop top covered in tiny purple flowers with a matching low-rise skirt that put her stomach on full display in a carousel, which she mysteriously captioned, 'Case closed.' Alongside photos that appeared to be from the filming of her upcoming Netflix film Enola Holmes 3, Brown showed off a middle-parted curly bun with two braids creating a headband along her hairline.
