MONTREAL, Canada (Reuters) - Australian Jack Della Maddalena outstruck Belal Muhammad to claim the UFC welterweight championship by unanimous decision in the early hours of Sunday, after a climactic final-round scramble left Muhammad bloodied from a knee strike.
Perth-born Della Maddalena, who has a boxing background, thwarted several takedown attempts from Muhammad, the superior wrestler, to keep most of the fight on the feet as he claimed his 18th professional win in a row, handing the American his first loss in six years.
"He brings the pressure... I knew I had to be sharp on my feet," Della Maddalena said.
"I wanted to take him out of there. I was gunning for a finish but Belal is a tough dude."
Della almost caught Muhammad with an early knee up the middle but missed, as the American replied with a punch and a head kick. A double jab-body kick combination from Della Maddalena frustrated Muhammad, who answered with a left hook before the Australian landed powerful straights.
"You are winning, he doesn't have a clue what to do right now," Della Maddalena's corner told him after the third round, while Muhammad's coaches implored him to go for the finish.
Muhammad led with a flurry of straights and jabs, and tried to hide his takedown attempt behind an uppercut. But Della Maddalena managed to stay on the feet, while Muhammad landed kicks near the fence.
"Five more minutes to realise all your dreams," Della Maddalena's corner told him going into the final round.
Della Maddalena cut Muhammad open with a knee but the American, not willing to give up, pushed the pace and landed a hook followed by a takedown, trying to finish the Australian with ground strikes.
But Della Maddalena got up, and unloaded on Muhammad with big punches to the head and body as they both went for a finish until the clock ran out, giving the Australian the win (48-47, 48-47, 49-46).
MAKHACHEV NEXT
Della Maddalena, 28, said he wanted to face lightweight champion Islam Makhachev, who had taken the belt from Australian champion Alexander Volkanovski.
"I think it's a beautiful challenge. He's the pound-for-pound number one. I want to get him back for Volk," Della Maddalena said.
In the co-main event, Kyrgyzstan's Valentina Shevchenko defended her flyweight belt with a unanimous decision over Manon Fiorot, who suffered her first loss after 12 straight wins.
Shevchenko's right hooks left Fiorot's nose bleeding in the first round, but the Frenchwoman fought back, pinning Shevchenko to the cage and landing knees from the clinch over the next two rounds.
But Shevchenko escaped a body lock in the fourth round and knocked Fiorot down, before landing a spinning backfist and a superwoman punch in the fifth and final round to ensure a 48-47 victory on all three judges' scorecards.

Cricket-India have not ruled out Bumrah for the final test, coach says

FILE PHOTO: Cricket - International Test Match Series - Fourth Test - England v India - Old Trafford Cricket Ground, Manchester, Britain - July 26, 2025 India's Jasprit Bumrah looks on Action Images via Reuters/Ed Sykes/File Photo MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) -India head coach Gautam Gambhir said they had not ruled out playing pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah in the final test against England at the Oval this week as they look to avoid a series defeat. Bumrah has already played three tests in the series, the maximum workload team management had targeted for the bowler after he spent three months on the sidelines with a back injury before returning to action in April. India snatched an unlikely draw in the fourth test at Old Trafford on Sunday but trail the hosts 2-1 in the five-match series. "We haven't had any conversation around the combination for the last test," Gambhir said. "No decision has been made on whether Jasprit Bumrah will play or not. Ultimately, whoever plays, they will try and do the job for the country." India captain Shubman Gill suggested it might be left up to Bumrah to make the call. "If he feels like he's fully fit and available for us, I think it would be a great deal for us," Gill told the BBC. India went into the fourth test with a depleted bowling attack having rested the injured pace duo of Akash Deep (groin) and Arshdeep Singh (hand). Bowling all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy had already returned home after a knee injury cut short his tour. Anshul Kamboj made his test debut in Manchester but Gambhir said they would have a full set of fit bowlers at their disposal for the test at the Oval, which begins on Thursday. "All the fast bowlers are fit," Gambhir said. "There are no injury concerns." However, India will be without stumper-batter Rishabh Pant, who has been ruled out of the series finale after fracturing his foot while batting in India's first innings in Manchester. Oscar Piastri turns disappointment into Belgian GP victory

OSCAR PIASTRI transformed his personal frustration into a triumphant performance at the Belgian Grand Prix, securing his sixth win of the season. The 24-year-old Australian, disappointed after losing to McLaren teammate Lando Norris in qualifying, executed a decisive overtake on the opening lap following a rolling start on a damp track. Piastri maintained his lead after switching from intermediate to slick tyres, expertly managing his medium compounds to fend off Norris, who opted for hard tyres in the closing stages. 'I knew lap one was going to be probably my best chance of winning the race,' Piastri said. 'I got a good exit out of Turn One and then lifted a little as I dipped through Eau Rouge and it was enough.' The victory extended Piastri's championship lead to 16 points over Norris, who acknowledged his rival's superior drive. 'He had a better start and he deserved it today,' Norris admitted. 'It's should-a, would-a, could-a... Oscar deserved it.' Piastri also reflected on the strategic tyre choice, noting that medium compounds provided a safety net against potential safety car interruptions. 'For me, medium was the safest tyre to be on at that point,' he said. The win marked McLaren's first Belgian GP triumph since Jenson Button's 2012 victory - AFP

'Lucky' De Minaur saves three match points to lift Washington Open title

ALEX DE MINAUR rallied from a set down and saved three match points to claim the Washington Open title with a 5-7 6-1 7-6(3) win over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the final of the ATP 500 event on Sunday. The Australian number one, who lost the 2018 final to Alexander Zverev, felt he rode his luck to secure his 10th career title and ensure he will enter the top 10 in the world rankings ahead of next month's U.S. Open. The two 26-year-olds exchanged breaks early in the opening set before Spain's Davidovich Fokina seized control by breaking again and closed out the set with the help of some crisp forehand winners. De Minaur responded emphatically in the second set, converting two of four break-point opportunities while holding serve throughout, wrapping up the set in just over 30 minutes with an ace to level the contest. The Spaniard looked on course for his first career title when he broke to grab the lead in the decider but he failed to serve out the match at 5-3, sending a forehand long to hand the break back to seventh seed De Minaur. Davidovich Fokina's frustration mounted as the 12th seed squandered three match points on De Minaur's serve, and the Australian then capitalised on a series of unforced errors in the tiebreak to edge the contest. 'I came here in 2018 and it gave me so much confidence, so I'm so happy that I was able to come back and end up winning the title,' De Minaur said at the trophy presentation. 'Alejandro, you're way too good not to have one of these, it's coming for sure,' he added, gesturing to the trophy. 'You deserved it today, I just got lucky. You are a hell of a competitor, hell of a player. No one on the tour wants to play you. And this is not the end, this is only going on for you.' Davidovich Fokina recalled that he had required a wild card to play in the U.S. capital last year and was pleased to have at least guaranteed a rise to a career high world number 19 when the rankings are updated on Monday. 'He deserved the win, he was fighting every ... ball, he was always pushing through my limits,' Davidovich Fokina said. 'We had a job to do before we started the year, to be at the middle of the year in the top 20. This week we did it, just not with the trophy. But for sure, we will keep going, pushing our limits, pushing harder.'- REUTERS
