Relief For Sonu Nigam As Bombay HC Stops Bihar Lawyer From Posting Under His Name On X

Last Updated: The Bombay High Court issued a restraining order against a Bihar lawyer impersonating singer Sonu Nigam on X, posting sensitive content and causing backlash against the singer. In a significant relief for singer Sonu Nigam, the Bombay High Court has issued a restraining order against a social media user accused of impersonating him on X (formerly Twitter). The user, a lawyer from Bihar, has been running an X handle under the name Sonu Nigam, which has been creating confusion among fans and in the media. Sonu Nigam, as per a Bar And Bench report, had moved the court alleging that his personality rights were being infringed upon by an X user named Sonu Nigam Singh, a criminal lawyer from Bihar. The user has been posting politically and communally sensitive content under the X handle 'Sonu Nigam'. The singer approached the court after facing backlash over posts actually made by Singh, which many wrongly attributed to him. Nigam's lawyer, Hiren Kamod, argued that Singh deliberately concealed his identity while posting on sensitive issues, misleading the public. Kamod presented 14 examples of communal posts made from the handle and pointed out that Singh had amassed over 90,000 followers, including public figures, by exploiting Nigam's name. One such post targeted BJP MP Tejasvi Surya, which stated, 'Don't dub Kannada movies in Hindi! Don't release Kannada movies pan-India! Do you have the guts to say this to Kannada film stars, Mr. @TejasviSurya, or are you just another language warrior?" Among these followers are notable public figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former minister Smriti Irani. Kamod pointed out that this misrepresentation has resulted in continuous online abuse aimed at the singer and his family. 'Because of Sonu Nigam Singh replying to the posts… Look at the hate Sonu Nigam is getting. Absolute chaos, My Lord. This is what the plaintiff is facing every day since August 2024," he told the court. It's worth noting that Sonu Nigam himself had quit X back in 2017. The National Award-winning singer is only on Instagram, where he posts about his work, daily life and opinions on life. Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
