A popular entrance to Joshua Tree National Park will close in April. What to know
Instead, visitors must enter or exit the park via the Twentynine Palms north entrance, or the Cottonwood entrance at the park's south boundary. The north entrance station is 25 miles east of the west entrance, and is the most accessible for visitors traveling on Highway 62, park staff said, adding about 17 minutes more driving time.
For the designated four days, visitors will not be permitted to enter the park via Park Boulevard through the town of Joshua Tree. Instead, Park Boulevard will be closed to vehicle traffic for 6 miles from the current west entrance to Quail Springs Picnic Area. This closure includes the Maze Loop and Creosote trailhead parking areas. Visitors also may not drive to or park at these trailheads during the closure.
This closure is necessary for crews to prepare the area for paving as the new entrance station is constructed. Crews will be cutting into the road to run utilities to the new entrance station location and to adjust the grade of the road. All other park roads are expected to remain open.
The current west entrance is the busiest of the three entries to the ever-more-popular park. In 2023, more than half a million vehicles passed through it. The new entrance will be built approximately one-third mile south of the current one and further inside the park. The station will be significantly expanded to include two inbound lanes, one outbound lane, and one bypass lane in each direction. Visitors will also benefit from the upgrade of a single entrance booth to four.
The project is funded by fee revenue through the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act.
'We appreciate the patience of our visitors and community as we continue work on the new entrance station,' said Joshua Tree National Park Superintendent Jane Rodgers. 'This temporary inconvenience will allow us to more quickly serve visitors in the future at the improved entrance station. The park recognizes this is a very busy time to close a section of road, but we must comply with the obligations set forth in our construction contract. The original closure was expected to last two weeks, and I'm glad it's been reduced to just four days.'
For April 7-10, park staff will place signs along Highway 62 and Park Boulevard and within the park alerting visitors to this temporary traffic pattern change. Exiting vehicles may turn around at Quail Springs Picnic Area and entering vehicles may turn around at the current west entrance station; however, this is not advised due to an expected traffic backup.

The Greenway: Construction begins on NJ's newest rail-to-trail park
Local, county and state officials gathered in Newark on July 15 to kick off work on the first phase of The Greenway — the state's newest park. The Greenway is a 9-mile, 100-foot-wide former rail line that stretches through Essex and Hudson counties. The rail line will be fully restored, offering residents alternative ways of transportation, various green spaces, outdoor gathering spots and other amenities. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection is leading the project while the New Jersey Economic Development Authority is overseeing construction. NJ Transit is also collaborating in the project and will potentially expand the Secaucus-Meadowlands Transitway into the park. Once complete, The Greenway will connect eight municipalities: Jersey City, Secaucus, Kearny, Newark, Belleville, Bloomfield, Glen Ridge and Montclair. Story continues below embed. The Newark portion of The Greenway will span a mile from Branch Brook Park to Broadway Avenue, with the path being ADA compliant and lined with native plants. The linear path will feature downward-facing lighting and designated lanes for cyclists and walkers, encouraging safe speeds and practices for all. There will be three major gathering spaces along the path: The Newark Central Activity Center will be between Summer and Broadway Avenue. It will have a stage and lawn, playground and water play area, multi-sport courts, outdoor exercise stations, picnic tables, and restrooms. The Tiffany Manor Community Space will be located between Manchester Place and Greenwood Lake Street, across from the Tiffany Manor. This area will have central seating and space for short-term amenities, including food trucks. Rain gardens and native plants will surround the area. The Branch Brook Park Overlook will be west of the Tiffany Manor. An observation deck will be built that overlooks the 360-acre Branch Brook Park. Nearby, visitors can walk to Belleville Park and the Hendricks Field Golf Course. Story continues below video. This segment of The Greenway represents the largest single investment in state history for the development of a new state park at $69.2 million. This phase is to be completed by the end of 2026. The National Park Service announced that, effective July 9, it has suspended 56-day advance reservations for USS Arizona Memorial tours. The visitor center, museum galleries and grounds and other tours remain open. "Visitors arriving after Sept. 3 may still be able to tour the Arizona Memorial, but access will be on a first-come, first-served basis, or through the normal reservation process where reservations are released the day before," the park service said in a news release. According to its website, USS Arizona Memorial reservations are released daily at 3 p.m. HST, and tickets can be purchased on The pause comes as preservation work is being done, including "removing two World War II-era salvage platforms attached to the USS Arizona." There is no timeline as to when the work will be completed. The National Park Service said to visit the Pearl Harbor National Memorial website or social media accounts for updates on the status of advance reservations.
