Woman concussed and 'shaken to my core' after alleged racist attack on Dublin bus
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info A woman has been left concussed and "shaken to my core" after she was attacked by a couple on a Dublin bus in an alleged racist incident. Zara*, who is of Pakistani heritage and has lived in Ireland for the last ten years, had boarded the W4 bus at Liffey Valley Shopping Centre at around 8pm on Monday evening after seeing a movie. And the incident occurred when an Irish woman already on the bus began accusing her of pushing her as she tried to get off. She told Dublin Live: "As the bus was stopping and people were trying to get off, a woman walked past me. Her shoulder may have lightly brushed mine while I was sitting. "Out of nowhere, she began shouting and accusing me of pushing her, even though I was seated and hadn't touched her. I tried to ignore it, but she continued to scream aggressively, saying 'why are you pushing me' and 'what are you doing'. "It felt like she already had some kind of hate or anger towards me before anything even happened. I calmly told her: 'Please don't shout at me. I didn't touch you.' "But she kept yelling and then pushed me with both hands. I pushed her back in self-defence. That's when she grabbed my hair and began hitting me violently. "I had no choice but to hit back to protect myself. There were two Indians, friends, she had pushed them beforehand. "It was like she was trying to ask for trouble, or wanted trouble. They ignored it, whereas I defended myself." The incident escalated when the woman's male partner jumped back on the bus and joined in the assault - apparently leaving a stroller behind him to do so. Zara said: "Her male partner joined in, and he began punching and kicking me full force, saying: 'You hit my wife. You hit my wife'. "The man threw away a stroller when he came up to beat me, he threw away the stroller a child was in. I don't know where he went, but that's what the people said in the bus, he just literally threw the child away." One man, a Ukrainian passenger, stepped in to help Zara. She said: "He tried to protect me, he got in between and he was trying to protect me, but he ended up getting kicked and punched as well. "During the assault, they were shouting racist abuse, calling me a 'P**i b***h'. When the Ukrainian man said he was calling the Gardai, I also told them I was calling. "That's when the attackers fled the scene." Gardai confirmed to Dublin Live that they attended the scene, and that investigations are ongoing. Zara was diagnosed with a concussion after the incident. She says that the "racism, the violence, the helplessness" of the attack "still haunts" her. She said: "I went to the hospital and was diagnosed with a concussion. My head and neck are still very sore, with visible swelling. "And I've been left not just physically hurt, but mentally and emotionally shaken to my core. I've never experienced anything like this in my life. The racism, the violence, the helplessness I felt in that moment. It still haunts me." *We have changed Zara's name to protect her identity. Defence Forces monitor Russian vessel off Irish coast
The Irish Defence Forces monitored a Russian cargo ship off the Irish coast yesterday. An Irish Air Corps maritime patrol aircraft was dispatched from Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnel to the southeast coast of Ireland to investigate the vessel. Between 5pm and 5.20pm yesterday evening, the Air Corps monitored the vessel in the Celtic Sea. The Airbus C-295 is one of two new patrol aircraft which were delivered to the Defence Forces last year. The Russian general cargo ship 'BARENTS' made its way through the Celtic Sea and sailed north to the Irish Sea overnight. Marine trackers forecast that the vessel is headed towards Murmansk in Russia. Data shows that the ship passed near undersea cables which run through Irish waters. A spokesperson for the Defence Forces said it cannot comment for "operational security reasons". The vessel was sanctioned by the United States in May 2024 and is known for turning its transponder off, which is a characteristic of Russia's shadow fleet. According to MarineTraffic, the BARENTS' signal data disappeared just after midnight off the northwest coast of France and reappeared at 10.20am this morning near Ireland's south coast.

Diogo Jota crash: What we know about the car crash that killed Liverpool star
The footballing world is still reeling from the shocking news that Diogo Jota has passed away at the age of 28. The Liverpool forward and his brother, Andre, both died in a car crash in Northern Spain in the early hours of Thursday morning. Tributes have poured in from all over the globe, with fans and players united in their grief at the death of two young stars gone way too soon. For Jota, his death is made even more tragic by the fact that he only got married two weeks ago to Rute Cardoso, the mother of his three children. Here's what we know about the crash that claimed the life of Jota and his brother: The crash took place at 12:30am Spanish time (11:30pm Irish time) in the Northern Spanish region of Zamora. Spanish authorities have stated that the Lamborghini in which Jota and his brother were travelling in veered off the road after a tyre blew out on the car while in the middle of overtaking a second car. It is then believed that the car caught fire. Pictures from the site of the crash in Spain show a burnt-out car on the side of the road. A spokesman for the Civil Guard in Zamora said: "The investigation into the crash is being carried out by Civil Guard traffic officers. We believe the car suffered a blowout from the marks on the road. The full police report once it is completed will be submitted to a duty court in Zamora which has launched an ongoing judicial investigation into this crash. 'That report is going to take time to complete, probably about four or five days but possibly longer. At this moment in time it is impossible to say at exactly what speed the car was going but that is something the Civil Guard investigators will be able to detail at least approximately in their final report from things like the skid marks. What I can confirm is that no other vehicle was involved and no-one else was hurt." Jota made 182 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 65 goals. He lifted the Premier League title with the team last season, and won the FA Cup and League Cup in 2022.
