Stevenson-Zepeda, Berlanga-Sheeraz results: Fight card highlights

USA Today16 hours ago
Hamzah Sheeraz has positioned himself for a future championship match after his performance at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, New York, on Saturday night.
The fight between Sheeraz and Edgar Berlanga was decided in the fifth round, but it could've easily been finished in the fourth.
Sheeraz knocked down Berlanga twice in the closing moments of the fourth round before the American boxer was saved by the bell.
Sheeraz carried his momentum into the first 17 seconds of the fifth round with three straight strikes to put away Berlanga.
As a result of the victory, Sheeraz is now the mandatory WBC Super Middleweight Championship challenger. The British boxer may have positioned himself for a future fight with Canelo Alvarez.
Shakur Stevenson and William Zepeda delivered as the co-main event on the card. Stevenson's accuracy and versatility were on display for the world to see as he overcame a scrappy performance from Zepeda.
Stevenson remains undefeated and retained his WBC lightweight championship.
USA TODAY Sports had updates, analysis and highlights from the main card:
Edgar Berlanga vs. Hamzah Sheeraz result:
Round 1: Both fighters didn't wait for a 'feeling out' process before trading shots with one another. Both had moments in the opening round, but Berlanga may have landed the shots that made the biggest difference.
Round 2: The second round served as more of a feeling-out process for both fighters. Sheeraz showed more variety with his punches and a strong command.
Round 3: Sheeraz lands a strong uppercut in the final moments of the round before a late flurry of strikes from Berlanga.
Round 4: Berlanga comes out swinging as the bell rings to start the round. Sheeraz answered back with a series of punches that knocked down Berlanga. He manages to get back up, only to get dropped by Sheeraz a second time.
Berlanga got up a second time and was allowed to continue the fight. As Sheeraz walks back toward him, the bell sounds to end the round.
Round 5: The bell rings to start the round and Sheeraz lands a quick combination to drop Berlanga to a knee just 17 seconds later. The fight is over.
Shakur Stevenson vs. William Zepeda result:
Rounds 1-4: William Zepeda has been the aggressor in the fight through the first four rounds. In both the third and fourth rounds, Zepeda has managed to force Shakur Stevenson against the ropes and cut off the ring.
Round 5: Zepeda has thrown a large number of punches through the first 4.5 rounds. He's landed 93 of his 367 punches. Stevenson has landed nearly 50% of his punches (103 of 221).
Round 6: Stevenson got the best of Zepeda in the round, landing some of the bigger shots in the round and staying in the middle of the ring.
Round 7: Stevenson has continued to look sharp and quicker with his shots as the fight has continued. After an aggressive start, Zepeda has started to slow down.
Round 8: Zepeda has slowed down but was able to land some successful shots as well in the round to stay in the fight. Despite a decent showing from Zepeda, the round may have still worked in Stevenson's favor, nullifying any of his opponent's momentum.
Round 9: Stevenson's versatility and speed were on display throughout exchanges with Zepeda. It's currently Stevenson's fight to lose.
Round 10: Zepeda continues to show a will to start in the fight and compete despite being slowed down by Stevenson. Both fighters traded blows early, but it was Stevenson who was still landing accurate shots.
Round 11: Zepeda has continued to have moments of success, but he will need to have some power in his punches to pull out a victory as the fight enters the final round.
Round 12: The crowd responds with cheers and approval as the fight comes to an end. Both Stevenson and Zepeda survive the fight and it will come down to the judges. Stevenson was efficient with his punches.
Stevenson walked over to Zepeda's corner after the fight to tell him, "It's all love and respect. Thank you (for the fight)."
Stevenson remains undefeated after a unanimous decision victory and retains the championship. He has won 24 straight fights (including 11 by knockout).
Alberto Puello vs. Subriel Matias result:
The fight has been even through the first eight rounds with Puello's WBC super lightweight title on the line.
In the championship rounds, Puello lands a right-handed upper cut in the 11th round that hurts Matias but doesn't knock him down. Matias appeared exhausted down the stretch and had a visible cut over his left eye.
Matias became the new champion by majority decision victory. Dalton Smith was in the ring after the fight to face off with Matias. The two men will fight for the title on Nov. 22.
David Morrell vs Imam Khataev result:
Imam Khataev delivered a two-punch power combination that nearly buckled the knees of David Morrell in the second round. It was the first time Morrell was knocked down in his career. Morrell managed to do some damage as well, creating a cut above Khataev's right eye in the early rounds.
Morrell's team was overheard discussing the cut between the second and third rounds.
Morrell was on pace to win the fifth round before Khataev landed a right-handed shot that sent the Cuban boxer back into the ropes in the final moments of the round. Morrell was fighting with a sense of urgency in the final 1:30 of the ninth round, landing several strikes to Khataev.
While some thought Khataev would've earned the victory, it was Morrell who was tabbed as the winner by split decision. It's an early contender for fight of the night.
Morrell entered the fight ranked in the Top 5 by the World Boxing Association.

Shakur Stevenson vs. William Zepeda Predictions
Staff writes: For this WBC lightweight championship match between Stevenson and Zepeda, I predict that the former will win via unanimous decision against the latter because he already has a blueprint to beat power punchers and has enormous experience in high-level championship fights. Much like he did against Edwin De Los Santos, I expect Stevenson to break down Zepeda with stiff counters and solid jabs that would allow him to score points in the judges' scorecards while frustrating him at the same time."
Mark Lelinwalla writes: "Masterful at planting his lead foot into the canvas and controlling the distance, Shakur Stevenson is absolutely brilliant working behind the jab, the anchor to his supreme sweet science. On the defensive side, Stevenson is slick and elusive, relying on the hit and don't get hit brand of boxing. He has the boxing skills to negate Zepeda's forward fighting and imposing power especially if the Mexican fighter struggles to get inside of Stevenson's world-class jab, arguably the best in all of boxing."
Trent Reinsmith writes: "Zepeda needs to overcome the defense of Stevenson, and that's a tall order for any fighter. Put simply, Zepeda doesn't have the style to do that. His best hope is that he can score through volume and convince the judges to give him the nod because of that. Stevenson will prove to be defensively sound, and score with enough counters to get the nod."

NFLPA executive committee issues wagon-circling statement regarding Lloyd Howell

The NFL Players Association is a labor organization. The key positions are inherently political. And a toxic slice of modern American political life has trickled into the union's handling of the current cocktail of controversies that NFLPA executive director Lloyd Howell is facing. Attack. Attack. And attack. In a statement issued on Sunday by the NFLPA executive committee to its membership (and leaked to Adam Schefter of ESPN, among others), the wagons were circled around Howell — and arrows were fired at the 'fake news' from meddling outsiders. 'As members of the NFLPA Executive Committee, we categorically reject false reports insinuating doubts within this committee or suggestions that we have asked our Executive Director to step down.' the message asserts. 'We further reject attempts to mischaracterize the committee's views or divide our membership. We have established a deliberate process to carefully assess the issues that have been raised and will not engage in a rush to judgement. We believe in and remain committed to working with our Executive Director and other members of NFLPA staff and player leadership who have a shared mission to advance the best interests of players. As we approach the 2025 season, we look forward to continuing our important work together and ensuring the strength and unity of our association.' So where are the false reports of which they speak? For nearly three weeks, we've been covering every angle of this weakly-covered story. We've seen not a single report that insinuates a single doubt in the executive committee or suggests that the executive committee asked Howell to step down. Likewise, we've seen nothing that would amount to an 'attempt to mischaracterize the committee's views.' The only thing that would even support a conclusion of doubt within the union came from a one-word quote provided by executive committee member Cam Heyward to ESPN. Heyward declined to speak to ESPN because the current situation with the union was, as he said, 'dicey.' That's not a 'false report,' unless Heyward claims he didn't say what he reportedly said. That said, we'll admit that some of what has been written here in recent days could divide membership, if membership: (1) reads it; and (2) chooses to care about it. Frankly, we believe membership needs to be divided, if there are members of membership who believe it's fine and/or dandy that Howell hid the collusion ruling from all players, that he didn't use it against the NFL, that an entire free-agency cycle passed without agents being able to use the ruling as leverage in negotiations with teams, and/or that it's acceptable for Howelll to have an undeniably cartoonish conflict of interest, via unnecessary part-time moonlighting with a private-equity firm that is currently rolling on the mattress with the NFLPA's mortal enemy. The league has used player apathy against it, for years. Union management has been doing it for at least two years, starting with the top-secret hiring of Howell. When called on it, the response is as predictable as it is sad. If the rank-and-file fall for it, it'll work. Which will be good for current management. But not so good for the current or future members of the union.

Eagles have two players land in the top five of ESPN's offensive tackle rankings

Eagles have two players land in the top five of ESPN's offensive tackle rankings Too much of something can lead to overindulgence. So be it. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler has been cranking out this series. Lately, we check his platform out now and then to see if he's given us another installment and if any Philadelphia Eagles are mentioned. He has spoken with league executives, coaches, and scouts, using their insights to rank the best players at every position. As you'd expect, he has offered some intriguing insights. For instance, Philadelphia landed at the top of a ranking of NFL offensive weaponry. This time around, offensive linemen were the talking point. The game's top offensive tackles were ranked. This ought to be good. After all, who has a better line than the Birds? The answer to that is simple. No one does, so when the smoke cleared and the dust settled, two Birds landed among the top half of another ranking of talent. Lane Johnson and Jordan Mailata land third and fifth, respectively,y on a ranking of the NFL's top offensive tackles Lane Johnson and Jordan Mailata sandwich Trent Williams on ESPN's ranking of the game's top offensive tackles. Johnson earned the third spot on the list, and Mailata took the fifth spot. Tristan Wirfs and Penei Sewell earned the top two spots. On the topic of Johnson, an anonymous NFL personnel director stated the following: "He's kind of the gold standard now -- technique, smarts, and probably the most instinctive of them all. He's a perfect product of that system. He's dealt with a lot, from mental health to injuries, and he's come out of it better than ever." Two linemen couldn't be any more different than Johnson or Mailata. They are kin in the sense that their pursuit of greatness is never-ending, but they come from totally different backgrounds. Johnson was the fourth overall selection of the 2013 NFL Draft. Mailata didn't know how to put his helmet on when he arrived at the NovaCare Complex. He had never played American football at any level before joining Philly as part of the International Player Pathway Program as a seventh-round pick in 2018, but, as an anonymous NFL executive stated to Fowler, his ascension has been "astronomical." A veteran NFL personnel executive added the following. "One of the most unique players in the NFL. Has really improved year-to-year. Only thing that holds him back from the others at the top is they probably have better instincts." Jeff Stoutland is the genius who continues to stir this complicated but beautiful mixture. He's probably the best (and only) remaining gift given to this organization by Chip Kelly's coaching era. Fowler's list is rounded out by five excellent players: Rashawn Slater, Laremy Tunsil, Dion Dawkins, Christian Darrisaw, and Andrew Thomas. Kudos to the Birds on this list. They'll be essential cogs in the Eagles' offensive machine again this season.

Where does Jordan-Hare Stadium land in USA TODAY Sports' SEC stadium ranking?

Where does USA TODAY Sports rank the home of the Tigers ahead of the 2025 season? If you were to ask SEC football players, current and past, most would tell you that Jordan-Hare Stadium is one of the toughest venues to play in. From the pregame eagle flight to many classic finishes, Jordan-Hare Stadium is a bucket list stadium for college football fans everywhere. How does the home of the Auburn Tigers rank among the rest of the SEC heading into the 2025 season? Blake Toppmeyer of USA TODAY Sports shares his take on the subject. Toppmeyer recently ranked every SEC stadium from the toughest to the least tough, placing Jordan-Hare in the middle at No. 8 out of 16 stadiums. When describing Jordan-Hare Stadium, Toppmeyer channels his inner Nick Saban, who once called the stadium "haunted" by saying that Jordan-Hare "uncorks a strange voodoo magic on opponents" due to some of the crazy finishes the stadium has seen in recent years. The most recent example came last November when Auburn defeated No. 15 Texas A&M in four overtimes. Other games of note include the "Kick Six", the "Prayer at Jordan-Hare" and the 1994 game against LSU, where Auburn erased a 23-9 deficit by picking off LSU quarterback Jaime Howard five times, returning three for touchdowns, in the final quarter to win, 30-26. Jordan-Hare Stadium ranks above several venues including Texas' Darryl K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium, Davis Wade Stadium at Mississippi State, and Kroger Field at Kentucky, but is below several iconic venues such as South Carolina's Williams Brice Stadium, Georgia's Sanford Stadium, and Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, which ranks No. 1.
