Mr. Lukas won 15 Triple Crown races, including the Kentucky Derby four times. Only good friend Bob Baffert has more Triple Crown victories, and Mr. Lukas owns a record-tying 20 in the Breeders' Cup World Championships.

'The whole secret of this game, I think, is being able to read the horse: Read what he needs, what he doesn't need, what he can't do, what he can do,' Mr. Lukas said in May before his 34th and final Preakness Stakes. 'That's the whole key. Everybody's got the blacksmith, everybody's got to the same bed available, the feed man. We all can hire a good jockey. We all can hire a pretty good exercise rider if we've got the means, so what the hell is the difference? The horse is the difference and what we do with him in reading him.'

Mr. Lukas was affectionately known around the barns and the racetrack as 'Coach' because he coached high school basketball before his professional career with horses began. Even with months to go before his 90th birthday, he would get up on his pony in the early morning hours and go out to the track himself, rather than letting his assistants do the day-to-day work.

Born Darnell Wayne Lukas on Sept. 2, 1935, in Wisconsin as the second of three children, he rose to prominence in the sport with quarter horses in races that are effectively sprints. He moved into thoroughbreds in the late 1970s and won his first Preakness with Codex in 1980.
Mr. Lukas has 4,967 documented victories in thoroughbred racing, with his horses earning more than $310 million from more than 30,600 starts.
'Today we lost one of the great champions of Churchill Downs and one of the most significant figures in thoroughbred racing over the last 50 years,' Churchill Downs Inc. CEO Bill Carstanjen said. 'We will miss his humor, his wisdom, and his unmatched capacity to thrill the fans with the performances of his horses on our sport's biggest days.'
Achieving something of a career renaissance over the past decade, one he credits to finding the right owners willing to spend money on horses, Mr. Lukas won the Preakness last year with Seize the Grey. Asked what motivates him to keep doing his job well into his late 80s, he gave a pep talk fit for a locker room before a big game.
'If you have a passion, you eliminate all the excuses,' he said. 'That's how it works. You get up early. You go without a meal. You drive. You go without sleep — as long as you got the passion. Don't let that sofa pull you down. It's a little easy when that alarm goes off to say, 'Oh my God, I don't know if I really want to do this today.' Erase that. The most important decision you'll ever make in your life is your attitude decision. Make it early, and make the right one.'

Wimbledon: Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard hits tournament-record 153 mph serve against Taylor Fritz

Associated Press LONDON (AP) — Fifth-seeded Taylor Fritz's match against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard — who hit a tournament-record 153 mph serve — in Wimbledon's first round was suspended after four sets on Monday night in case they wouldn't be able to finish before the tournament's 11 p.m. curfew. They'll resume on Tuesday. Mpetshi Perricard, whose speediest serve came in the opening game, took the initial two sets 7-6 (6), 7-6 (8), before Fritz grabbed the next two 6-4, 7-6 (6). The 6-foot-8 Mpetshi Perricard bettered the previous Wimbledon mark of 148 mph, by Taylor Dent in 2010. Fritz, though, not only managed to put his return in play, but also eventually won the point. Playing with the No. 1 Court retractable roof closed and artificial lights on, Mpetshi Perricard was two points from winning while leading 5-2 in the fourth-set tiebreaker, but never got closer. From 6-all, 2024 U.S. Open runner-up Fritz took the next two points to force a fifth set and pounded his right fist on his chest, yelling, 'Let's (expletive) go! Come on!' It was about 10:15 p.m., and the players met up at the net with an official to discuss whether or not to continue. Eventually, the chair umpire announced to the crowd: 'Ladies and gentlemen, due to the late time of the day, we will not be able to finish the match. Therefore the match will be suspended until tomorrow. Play is suspended.' Over at Centre Court, Monday's last match also was halted, with No. 3 Alexander Zverev, a three-time major finalist, even at a set apiece against Arthur Rinderknech when they stopped at 10:54 p.m. There were no breaks of serve in either of the two sets they played. Rinderknech took the first 7-6 (3), and Zverev the second by a 7-6 (8) score. Fritz did not appear pleased about the interruption of his match. He looked toward his guest box with his palms up and said: 'I couldn't do anything. I tried.' In a match between two of the tour's top servers, Mpetshi Perricard hit 33 aces before play was stopped, and Fritz hit 24. Mpetshi Perricard never earned a break point during the four sets contested Monday; Fritz had five chances and converted one. Fritz, a 27-year-old Californian, was a quarterfinalist at Wimbledon in 2022, losing to Rafael Nadal, and again a year ago, losing to Lorenzo Musetti. Mpetshi Perricard, a 21-year-old Frenchman, reached the fourth round at the All England Club last year, also eliminated by Musetti. ___ AP tennis:

Knicks to conduct 2nd interview with Mike Brown for coaching job, AP source says

Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Knicks will interview two-time NBA Coach of the Year Mike Brown for a second time as they seek Tom Thibodeau's replacement, a person with knowledge of the details said Monday. Brown's return this week will make him the first of the known candidates to get a second interview for the position that has been vacant for nearly a month. Other candidates could also be asked to return, the person told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because details of the coaching search were to remain private. The Knicks have also talked with former Memphis coach Taylor Jenkins and assistants James Borrego of New Orleans and Micah Nori of Minnesota about the position. Brown's second interview was first reported by the New York Post. Brown led the Sacramento Kings to the playoffs in 2023, their first appearance since 2006, and was voted coach of the year. He went 107-88 there in 2 1/2 seasons before he was fired during this past season. Brown also won the coaching award in 2009 with Cleveland and is 454-304 in his career. Thibodeau was fired June 3 despite leading the Knicks to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in 25 years. Like, Brown he also won NBA Coach of the Year honors with two teams. ___ AP NBA: recommended

Blue Jays OF Anthony Santander still not swinging because of partial shoulder dislocation

Associated Press TORONTO (AP) — Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Anthony Santander still hasn't been able to resume swinging a bat as he recovers from a partially dislocated left shoulder. General manager Ross Atkins said Monday that Santander had a left shoulder subluxation after crashing into the outfield wall in Anaheim in early May. Toronto put Santander on the injured list on May 30. Santander signed a $92.5 million, five-year contract with the Blue Jays in January. The deal includes up to $61.75 million in deferred payments. Atkins said Santander could resume swinging soon and said it's still possible the slugger returns before the All-Star break Santander set career highs with 44 homers, 102 RBIs and 91 runs scored in 155 games for Baltimore last year but has struggled to duplicate those numbers this season. The veteran switch hitter is batting .179 with six home runs and 18 RBIs in 50 games. Shortstop Bo Bichette was scratched from the lineup for Monday's home game against the New York Yankees because of a sore right knee. Ernie Clement went from third base to shortstop and moved up from second in the order to the leadoff spot. Addison Barger moved from right field to third base, George Springer went from DH to right, Will Wagner moved from second base to DH, and Davis Schneider went from left field to second. Jonatan Clase replaced Schneider in left field. ___ AP MLB: recommended
