Basin Bridge Police has apprehended a 19-year-old youth and two juveniles for allegedly stealing utensils and gas cylinders from an Amma Canteen.
The Amma Canteen at Demellow's road was kept closed for last two months since stormwater drain works was undertaken. Following orders to reopen the canteen, the staff opened it on July 2 and found cooking vessels and eight LPG cylinders were stolen from there. Based on a complaint from the regional health officer, Chennai Corporation, police investigated and nabbed three persons including two juveniles. Cooking vessels and eight cylinders were recovered from them.
The youth who has been identified as Sanjay alias Pottu Sanjay, 19 of Vyasarpadi was remanded and two juveniles were sent to Government Home for Boys.

The police have arrested a couple after they were found illegally refilling LPG cylinders at their grocery store in a Phase-1 residential area, posing a serious safety hazard. The accused, identified as Syed Ali and Amina Khatoon, were reportedly selling small gas cylinders at inflated rates after refilling them from domestic cylinders. A case has been registered under sections 287 and 288 of the BNS. (HT photo fro representation) During the raid, police recovered five large LPG cylinders, eight small cylinders, and a weighing machine used for refilling. Police said that the couple had no licence or authorisation to refill or sell gas cylinders. 'This action was part of a drive to crack down on illegal cylinder refilling operations, which pose a major fire and explosion risk. Cylinder blasts have become increasingly common due to such unsafe practices,' said a police official. A case has been registered under sections 287 (negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible matter) and 288 (negligent conduct with respect to explosive substance) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the accused.

Anantapur: Based on the instructions of YBPTA Prasad, Regional Vigilance and Enforcement Officer, Anantapur, a series of surprise inspections were conducted in Kalyandurg town on Monday. The raids took place at: House No. 13/57, along with an adjacent tin shed on Erranela Street, House No. 10A/361 in Saubhagya Theatre Street During the inspections, officials discovered that domestic and commercial LPG cylinders were being stored illegally and used for unauthorised trading, in violation of the LPG (Regulation of Supply and Distribution) Order, 2000. A total of 38 INDANE LPG cylinders were seized from the two locations. The seized stock was handed over to the local revenue authorities. Cases have been registered under Section 6(A) of the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 against the individuals involved. RV & EO YBPTA Prasad stated that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found hoarding or trading government-supplied domestic LPG cylinders for unauthorised commercial purposes. He warned that such violations pose safety hazards and undermine public welfare schemes. The vigilance team reiterated their commitment to curbing illegal LPG trade and ensuring compliance with government norms for the safety and benefit of the public.

BALASORE: Odisha police on Sunday arrested a 21-year-old man from Nilagiri area on charges of attempt to rape the wife of an assistant professor of Fakir Mohan University in Balasore district. Sources said the accused Shankar Patra of Mardarajpur village under Nilagiri police limits, allegedly tried to sexually assault the women on Saturday afternoon when the assistant professor was not in his residence inside the university campus at Nuapadhi. Police said Patra knocked the door at about 1.15 pm and posed himself as an LPG cylinder delivery man. The woman then opened the door and the accused immediately entered the house and attempted to rape her. As per the complaint, the woman fought with him for nearly 20 minutes to escape and then moved to another room and locked herself inside.
