Grace Kim with a stunning finish wins Evian Championship for her first major
Kim, whose 2-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th in regulation gave her a 4-under 67, looked to be just as surprised as everyone else when she rolled in a 12-foot eagle putt to win the playoff. The 24-year-old Australian calmly placed her hand over her mouth and stood still before doubling over and breaking into a wide smile.
Thitikul's biggest challenge had been English amateur Lottie Woad, who was coming off a win in the Irish Women's Open and at one point had the lead on the back nine of Evian Resort. She closed with 64 and then waited to see if that would be enough.
Woad was bidding to become the first amateur to win a major since Catherine Lacoste at the 1967 U.S. Women's Open.
Thitikul birdied the 17th to take the lead, and the Thai player was on the verge of her first major when she laid up short of the pond and hit wedge into 8 feet on the final hole.
But there was Kim, blasting a fairway metal onto the green. The ball rolled back down the slope to 2 feet for eagle to tie for the lead. Thitikul's birdie putt for the title missed right. She shot 67 and joined Kim at 14-under 270, one ahead of Woad and Minjee Lee (68).
Back to the 18th in the playoff, Thitikul again looked like a winner when Kim's second shot bounced on a cart path, over some rocks and into the pond. Thitikul was just left of the green in two.

Thitikul had to make an 8-foot birdie putt to extend the playoff, which she did. Playing the 18th for the third time, Kim again delivered another beauty over the pond and onto the green to about 12 feet.
Thitikul, who had tiny insects buzzing around her ball in the collar of a bunker, chipped weakly to about 6 feet. She could only watch as Kim ended it with an eagle.
That extended what already is a record streak in the LPGA Tour's 75-year history, the 18th consecutive tournament to start a season with a different winner. It also makes 13 different winners in the last 13 majors.
Kim won for the second time on the LPGA, adding to her title in Hawaii two years ago.

Bob Hammel, legendary Indiana sports writer and friend of Bob Knight, dies at 88
Associated Press BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Bob Hammel, who covered 23 NCAA Final Fours and 29 Indiana high school basketball tournament championships during a 52-year sports writing career that included a close friendship with late Hall of Fame coach Bob Knight, has died. He was 88. Hammel died Sunday at Bell Trace, a senior living community in Bloomington, according to an obituary in The Herald-Times, his longtime employer. No cause of death was given. The lifelong Indiana resident spent 40 years with the Bloomington Herald-Telephone and later Herald-Times, including 30 as sports editor. Hammel was a member of several halls of fame, including the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, Football Writers Association of America, Indiana Journalism and Indiana University Athletics. He served terms as president of the Basketball and Football Writers associations. He received the Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Bert McGrane Award from the Football Writers Association. Hammel won the Indiana Sportswriter of the Year award 21 times. He authored or co-authored 14 books, including the 2002 autobiography of Knight, the fiery IU basketball coach who died in 2023. They also teamed in 2012 for a book titled 'The Power of Negative Thinking.' Upon retiring as Big Ten Conference commissioner in 2020, Jim Delany said, "Bob Hammel is simply the most important Big Ten writer in the last 50 years.' Hammel, a native of Huntington, Indiana, attended Indiana University for a year. He took a summer job as sports editor of his hometown paper and instead of returning to school that fall, he stayed on at the paper for eight years. He worked at papers in Peru, Fort Wayne, Kokomo and Indianapolis before being hired as sports editor of the Herald-Telephone in 1966. His career included covering five Olympics before he retired from sports writing in 1996. Athletics rookie center fielder Denzel Clarke headed to injured list with adductor strain
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Athletics rookie center fielder Denzel Clarke is headed to the injured list after an MRI on Monday revealed an adductor strain. Manager Mark Kotsay said before Monday night's game that a roster move would be announced Tuesday. He said the A's weren't able to get another player in place in time for the series opener at Texas, where Clarke got his scan that showed the grade two strain. Kotsay said he didn't have a timeline for Clarke's return, but that it was probably going to be a couple of weeks. Clarke exited the A's loss at Cleveland on Sunday with what was reported as right hip discomfort. The 25-year-old Canadian has hit .230 through his first 47 big league games, but hit .333 (14 of 42) with six doubles, two triples and a home run his past 12 games before getting hurt. 'Really unfortunate timing for Denzel,' Kotsay said. 'I think his confidence offensively was continuing to build, the at-bats were just getting better and better.' Lawrence Butler was the starting center fielder in the opener against the Rangers. He made 89 of his first 90 starts in right field, with the other start also being in center.
