12-year-old Chinese swimmer turns heads but how young is too young in professional sport?
The participation of 12-year-old Chinese swimmer Yu Zidi at the World Championships in Singapore has ignited a debate about age limits in competitive swimming. Yu's impressive performance, including a fourth-place finish in the 200m individual medley final, missing the medal by just 0.06 seconds, has raised questions about the physical and mental impact of high-level competition on young athletes.
Yu qualified for the finals of both the 200m individual medley and 200m butterfly, competing alongside Summer McIntosh, who won three golds at the Paris Olympics at age 17. Yu will also compete in the 400m medley later this week.
The young swimmer discovered the sport at age six as a way to beat the heat during China's hot summers. Her achievements draw comparisons to Inge Sorensen, who won an Olympic bronze medal at age 12 in the 1936 Berlin Games.
When asked if she was a genius, Yu responded: "No, not really. It's all the result of hard training."
Unlike Bahrain's Alzain Tareq, who competed at age 10 in the 2015 World Championships but never challenged for medals, Yu has shown remarkable competitive ability.
Christian Hansmann, sports director of German swimming, expressed concerns about Yu's participation. "Putting a girl of 12 in front of a world championship crowd of 5,000 spectators, with the high pressure from the media and the coaches, is far too early in my opinion," he said.

French swimmer Lilou Ressencourt shared her perspective: "I'm 22 and handling world championships, even French championships, can be difficult. I tell myself that at 12, you have a heavy responsibility... it's not normal at 12 to have that kind of pressure."
Current World Aquatics rules set the minimum age at 14, but younger swimmers can compete if they meet qualifying times. Yu's participation has prompted the organisation to consider reviewing these regulations.
Brent Nowicki, World Aquatics executive director, admitted surprise at Yu's qualification at such a young age. He acknowledged the need for careful consideration of the rules while maintaining safeguarding measures.
"She's great. I mean, there's a big future there for her. Hopefully there could be good things that could happen out of this, and it could be great," Nowicki said. "Obviously we have to make sure that that's what it is, right? We don't want to tip that balance and go the other way, and we have to be careful about that."
The age debate extends beyond swimming. In 2022, figure skating authorities increased the minimum age for senior competition from 15 to 17 following a drug scandal involving Russian teenager Kamila Valieva.
Former Olympic skating champion
Katarina Witt
, who won gold at age 18 in the 1984 Sarajevo Games, supported the change, stating it was "primarily protecting the female athletes from their sometimes over-ambitious managers."

The Nanterre prosecutor's office told AFP that they had requested that the investigating judge refer the rape charge to a criminal court."It is now up to the investigating magistrate to make a decision within the framework of his order," the prosecutor's office told AFP in a statement. Hakimi, 26, played a major role in PSG's run to their first Champions League title, the full-back scoring the opener in the 5-0 rout of Inter Milan in the final in May. According to Colin, her client had "been the target of an attempted extortion". "Nothing in this case suggests an attempted extortion," Rachel-Flore Pardo, the lawyer representing the woman, said. Chandigarh's ‘Swayam' self-defence academy shut down, training now limited to schools
1 2 Chandigarh: In a concerning development for women's safety initiatives in the city, Chandigarh Police's renowned 'Swayam' self-defence academy, which empowered thousands of young girls and women over the past seven years, has remained shut since Aug 2024. The closure marks a significant shift in how self-defence training is now being imparted across Chandigarh. Launched in 2017 with the aim of equipping girls with physical and mental tools to defend themselves, 'Swayam' quickly became a symbol of empowerment in the city. Through martial arts, Wushu, and other practical self-defence techniques, the programme reached every corner of the city, from economically weaker sections to schools, colleges, and the IT sector. Between 2017 and 2024, a total of 978 self-defence programmes were conducted, training 1,33,471 girls and women. Alongside this, 739 awareness programmes were held, reaching 92,560 participants. In total, the initiative reached 1,717 groups with a combined 2,26,031 attendees, making it one of the most expansive public safety training efforts in the region. Under the 'Swayam' banner, participants didn't just learn to protect themselves, many went on to excel in sports and competitions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Moose Approaches Girl At Bus Stop In Yaroslavskaya Oblast - Watch What Happens Happy in Shape Undo From 2018 to 2024, girls trained through the program brought home 917 medals, including 319 gold, 298 silver, and 300 bronze, even clinching 3 gold and 1 silver medal at international levels. However, since the academy's closure in Aug 2024, the format of the programme has been scaled down. Now, training is being conducted only in schools by police personnel, raising concerns about accessibility and outreach, especially for those outside the formal education system. SSP Kanwardeep Kaur said, "Around 1,500 girls have been trained under this programme so far this year." While the commitment of the police force to continue the training is evident, the absence of a dedicated academy limits the programme's scale and impact. Players have expressed disappointment over the academy's closure, calling for its revival. Many fear that without a centralised hub for structured training, the consistency and quality of the programme could suffer. As Chandigarh continues to promote safety and empowerment for women, the future of 'Swayam' now hangs in the balance, a once-celebrated initiative now functioning only in fragments.
