DJ Lagway has 'eye-opening' conversation with top QB prospect in 2027 class

USA Today13 hours ago

The top quarterback in the recruiting class of 2027, Elijah Haven, recently capped off his two-week tour of seven schools at the University of Florida and left saying a conversation with sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway was "eye-opening" for him, according to Manny Navarro of The Athletic.
'(Lagway) said the relationships he built in his recruitment process with the coaches is what separated them for him,' Haven said. 'They didn't fake it or anything, and they were always welcoming to him and to his family. That's a big thing for me. It's just about fit for me, whether it's LSU or if it's their rival.'
Navarro also reported that Haven's mother likes Florida and his dad is backing whatever decision Haven makes, despite growing up a Georgia fan. A Baton Rouge, Louisiana, native, Haven grew up rooting for Joe Burrow and the LSU Tigers. As most of the state's top prospects are, Haven is linked to Brian Kelly's squad. Alabama, Michigan and Ohio State are all major players as well.
Lagway is draft-eligible after the 2026 season, so Haven would spend a year behind him at most. Some of the other quarterbacks on the roster may develop into a bridge starter, but Haven would be the natural successor to Lagway as the only current five-star quarterback in his class.
Florida has plenty of work to do before landing a commitment from Haven, though. Miami recently entered the mix, and Cam Ward's record-setting season has Haven interested in the Hurricanes. Playing for a national championship contender and seeing the field early are two items on his wish list, but neither is a deal breaker.
Scouting Report
"I was expecting to see more rawness out of (Haven) from a mechanical perspective walking into this event," wrote On3's Cody Bellaire in a June 28 scouting report, "but he appears to have cleaned up some of those issues during this offseason. During the routes on air portion of the workout in the morning session, Haven threw with good touch and was letting the ball rip over the middle of the field.
"Then we got to the afternoon session and started the 7-on-7 period, it was quite refreshing watching him go through his reads and pick apart the defense. He ended up throwing touchdowns on his first four drives of the afternoon and showed great decision-making. This was easily his best in-person showing for us and showed quality improvement to his game on Saturday."

Lions legend Ndamukong Suh launches an interesting new podcast

Former Detroit Lions star Ndamukong Suh was always known as a sharp guy off the field. Now retired for a few years, Suh is launching a new podcast that explores his football background and off-field financial prowess. Suh spent his first five NFL seasons with the Lions. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft earned All-Pro status in four of those years and was the Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2010, bagging 10 sacks. While his physical play made him some enemies on opposing teams (notably Green Bay), his poised, shrewd off-field persona and friendship with Warren Buffett were always a very intriguing subplot in the story of Suh. Advertisement He's now developed that into a podcast called "No Free Lunch" in conjunction with The Athletic. From the podcast liner notes, NFL legend and entrepreneur Ndamukong Suh sits down with the sharpest minds across the world of sports, investing, and entrepreneurship to discuss their personal success journeys and explore the latest business and finance ideas. No Free Lunch launches on July 1st with brand-new episodes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This is a good opportunity for fans to get more insight into the real off-field lives and interests of their NFL heroes, including Suh. Insiders say Steelers' Minkah Fitzpatrick trade talks began months ago

The Steelers shocked the NFL by trading Minkah Fitzpatrick to the Dolphins in exchange for Jalen Ramsey, Jonnu Smith, and a late-round pick swap — but insiders suggest his Steel City exit had been brewing behind the scenes for some time. According to insider Jeremy Fowler on social media, Fitzpatrick was the subject of "trade whispers" starting as early as last March — stemming from his noticeable decline over the past few years. In a separate social media post, insider Gerry Dulac stated that the Steelers weren't seeking out trade partners for Fitzpatrick, but they were listening to offers. He added that Fitzpatrick's lack of splash plays over the past two seasons played a part in the Steelers' decision to trade him — as it became difficult to justify his current salary. Over the past two seasons with Pittsburgh, Fitzpatrick produced just one interception — a far cry from the 17 interceptions he accumulated during his first four years as a Steeler. Splash plays aside, Fitzpatrick played a vital role in coverage with his ability to blanket the field — making him difficult for the Steelers to replace, but not impossible.
