Thames Water's Executive Bonuses Were Almost a Joke

Bloomberg21-05-2025
There's nothing wrong in principle with paying retention bonuses to employees during a takeover. A buyer doesn't want key staff walking out before it's had a chance to get its feet under the table and decide who it needs to keep. So the anger directed at Thames Water Utilities Ltd. over the financial incentives it planned to hand to senior executives was arguably misplaced from a corporate governance perspective. But we shouldn't be too surprised: This company is in the outrage manufacturing business.
Thames Water said Tuesday it would ' pause ' the plan after a backlash from the Labour government, which had signaled an intention to block the payments. The bonuses, disclosed to a parliamentary select committee last week, are related to a potential £4 billion ($5.3 billion) investment in Britain's largest water and sewerage company by KKR & Co. Their divulgence was never going to land well for a utility that's justifiably regarded as a national disgrace. Thames has a poor pollution record, was saved from collapse this year only by a £3 billion emergency loan, and is now raising customer bills by more than 30%. Whatever the justification, bonuses for the people running such an enterprise look like rewards for failure.

Gold Gains as Weaker Economic Data Boosts Fed Rate Cut Bets

(Bloomberg) -- Gold edged higher on Tuesday, building on three days of growth amid expectations the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates next month after a spate of weaker economic data. PATH Train Service Resumes After Fire at Jersey City Station Mayor Asked to Explain $1.4 Billion of Wasted Johannesburg Funds Chicago Curbs Hiring, Travel to Tackle $1 Billion Budget Hole All Hail the Humble Speed Hump US President Donald Trump's trade wars and tension surrounding his looming deadline for Russian President Vladimir Putin to end his full-scale invasion of Ukraine has also provided momentum for gold. 'Fears of a slowdown in the US economy along with concerns about rising inflation amid Trump's tariffs are driving increased demand for gold,' ING Groep NV strategist Ewa Manthey said. 'With US fed rate cuts now intensifying, gold's bullish momentum could grow, sending gold to fresh highs.' Spot gold traded near $3,379 an ounce in London, up 0.2%. Traders are increasingly pricing in US rate cuts to bolster the US economy after weaker data, including a Monday report from the Institute for Supply Management that showed the services sector effectively stagnated in July as firms — faced with tepid demand and rising costs — reduced headcount. That comes after data out last week showed a much weaker labor market than previously thought after revisions to May and June, while inflation-adjusted consumer spending barely rose. Lower rates typically boost the price of gold, which doesn't pay interest. 'I think it will be the Fed cutting rates that could be the catalyst to push gold to another record,' Manthey added. 'I think gold has further room to run. Geopolitical risks remain elevated, Trump's trade war is still going on and ETF holdings continue to expand. The bullish drivers are there.' Bullion has gained nearly 30% this year amid Trump's campaign to slap tariffs on imports and geopolitical conflicts, along with central bank buying and bets on rate cuts. Investors and analysts see more gains ahead, with Fidelity International forecasting bullion could hit $4,000 an ounce by the end of next year. Citigroup Inc. also revised its forecast for gold, with analysts now predicting bullion will rally to a record high in the near term due to a worsening US economy and inflation-boosting tariffs. But many expectations for gold to break out of its range bound trading following April's $3,500 high haven't come to fruition even with the slew of uncertainty in both the economy and geopolitical outlook. 'Despite all these gold-positive arguments, the gains of the precious metal remain limited,' Commerzbank Research wrote on Tuesday. 'We continue to see gold fundamentally well-supported, but it is clear that the momentum we saw particularly in the first quarter has dissipated. This is also evident in the fact that gold traded 'sideways' despite significantly increased US rate cut expectations since April,' the note said. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index was down 0.1%. Silver also gained while palladium and platinum declined. --With assistance from Laura Avetisyan and Yihui Xie. This Airline for Dogs (and Their Humans) Is Expanding Flights Across the U.S. and Europe

A "dog-first" airline is soaring to new heights, expanding its routes as it celebrates carrying over 1,000 dogs (and their owners) more than a year after it launched. Bark Air first got its start in May 2024 with service from the New York area to Los Angeles and London. Since then, the carrier has expanded to Paris, Lisbon, Madrid, Seattle, Florida, and San Francisco as well as started offering the ability to book private or shared charters with other dog owners looking to travel to a new destination in style. 'When we launched Bark Air last year, our goal was to challenge the norms of dog travel by creating an experience that treats dogs not as cargo, but as VIP guests,' Matt Meeker, the co-founder and chief executive officer at Bark, said in a statement. 'One year later, we're proud to have delivered on that promise, offering thousands of dogs and their humans a stress-free, joy-filled way to explore the world together. This milestone is a testament to our unwavering belief that dogs deserve better—and our commitment to building a dog-first future doesn't stop here. We're just getting started.' Bark Air operates a fleet of primarily Gulfstream G4 and G5 aircraft complete with comfortable seating, amenities like calming aids and treats, and plenty of space for dogs to roam. Dogs are served "their beverage of choice" during ascent and descent "to prevent ear discomfort commonly caused by change in cabin pressure," according to the company. And as a bonus, there may be a few "special surprises" along the way. While the carrier provides perks and convenience, it can be pricey. One-way tickets for one dog and one human average $8,900 on routes from New York to London, for example. Flights also operate at staggered schedules, generally flying every two weeks. The airline is dedicated to dogs, but said other beloved pets like cats or birds may be welcome to board. However, non-dog companions must remain in a carrier at all times for their safety. The airline also requires dogs to be leashed during the walk from the terminal to the aircraft, and during taxi, takeoff, landing, or if turbulence is expected—similar to humans wearing seat belts. But once the aircraft is at a cruising altitude, owners have the option of removing the leash. The airline is owned by the company Bark, which also sells BarkBox toy and treat subscription packages for dogs.
