Paul Skenes notches 9 strikeouts, leading Pirates to 3-0 win over Dodgers

Yahoo26-04-2025
Friday night's matchup between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Pittsburgh Pirates featured an enticing clash between National League Rookie of the Year Paul Skenes and the reigning World Series champions.
Would the Pirates' pitching sensation be humbled by one of the most formidable lineups in Major League Baseball? Or would one of the NL's top pitchers handcuff a Dodgers offense that hasn't yet performed to expectations?

This time around, Skenes prevailed with 6 1/3 scoreless innings in Pittsburgh's 3-0 victory. The right-hander notched nine strikeouts with no walks and five hits allowed.
'I think that he's one of the best in the game,' Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after the game. 'Tonight, we really couldn't muster much.'
However, Roberts also felt that Dodgers hitters helped Skenes out by continuing a trend of chasing pitches out of their hitting zone.
"I think that it's hard to hit guys that good when you're chasing the hitting zone vs. locking in on your own area," Roberts added. "I thought tonight, as well as days preceding, we just are not as disciplined as we need to be in certain areas of the hitting zone."

Three relievers followed Skenes and kept the Dodgers off the scoreboard for the remaining 2 2/3 innings, giving up just one hit. David Bednar, back with the Pirates after being demoted to the minors in early April, struck out two in the ninth for his second save.
Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts batted a combined 0-for-8 at the top of the Dodgers' batting order, giving Freddie Freeman and Teoscar Hernández no opportunities to drive a runner in. Freeman provided the Dodgers' best chance to score in the fourth inning, leading off with a double and advancing to third on an error by Bryan Reynolds. But Skenes retired the next three batters to strand Freeman.
Skenes has won two of his three starts versus the Dodgers going back to last season, allowing 7 runs in 11 innings in his first two matchups. He now has a 3.63 ERA against Los Angeles, averaging 13 strikeouts per nine innings.
'This is where baseball gets really fun, I think,' Skenes said afterward, via the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. '... [Shohei] Ohtani saw my pitches today. Freddie [Freeman], I think, saw all my pitches today. And aside from today, they've all seen all my pitches. I'm not hiding anything from them, and they're not hiding anything from me. I've seen how they attacked me, and they've seen how I attack them.'

Yoshinobu Yamamoto allowed his first earned run in his past four starts, but walked four batters and gave up five hits. Yet with no run support from the Dodgers' lineup, he took his second loss of the season, dropping his record to 3-2.
The Dodgers have lost three in a row and four of their past five games, during which they've averaged under four runs per contest. The skid has dropped Los Angeles to third in the NL West, one game behind the San Diego Padres and a half-game below the San Francisco Giants.

Chris Paul Addresses "Unfinished Business" With James Harden In Clippers Reunion: "It's Wild That You Get This Opportunity Again"

Chris Paul Addresses "Unfinished Business" With James Harden In Clippers Reunion: "It's Wild That You Get This Opportunity Again" originally appeared on Fadeaway World. Chris Paul addressed the media for the first time as a Clippers player once again in an emotional press conference to start what could be the final year of his NBA career. Earlier this month, Chris Paul announced that he hopes this is his last season in the NBA. And in that 'one last ride' farewell tour-type decision, Paul decided to reunite with James Harden in LA. In his first press conference, he addressed his relationship with his former Rockets teammate, as well as the viral clip that seemed to show an argument between Harden and Paul during their Rockets days. Paul admits that Harden and he have "unfinished business" together. 'Yeah, we talked about it and talked about just the history of obviously being there in Houston. And it's funny, man, cause that clip or whatnot that goes around. It was a lot of stuff, funnier and stuff like that than that. That was just sort of our relationship." "But I think that's what made that team so good, you know, we got on each other in different situations. But that team, I can honestly say, was one of the funnest teams I've ever been on in my career. And James is one of those guys who loves to be in the gym all day long." "And so, it's wild that you get this opportunity again after those two years and the success that we had. And we find we definitely know we had unfinished business. So, we get a chance to see what's going on here.' This is the clip that he is most likely referring to here, which goes viral through separate social media accounts every now and then. It highlights the frank and transparent nature of Chris Paul's relationship with James Harden. Harden and Paul became teammates initially after Paul left the Clippers for the first time in 2017. For two seasons (2017-18 and 18-19), Harden and Paul's duo caused trouble in paradise for the Golden State Warriors' dynasty era at the time. They were arguably the only real contenders to go up against the Warriors' super team and have a fighting chance of winning. In the two seasons that this duo spent together, James Harden arguably had the best phase of his career. In 2018 and 2019, Harden averaged 33.4 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 8.1 assists per game. Meanwhile, Paul averaged 17.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 8.0 assists in the same duration. If not for Paul's injury in the 2018 Playoffs, James Harden and Chris Paul would both likely have NBA rings today. In 2018, the Western Conference Finals went to seven games before Paul's injury cost the Rockets a chance at their first trip to the NBA Finals since Hakeem Olajuwon's days. In 2019, the Warriors won in six games, but each game was decided in a single-digit deficit, showing how close the two teams were at the time to being at each other's throats every time they saw each other on the court. Therefore, Paul believes that the duo's reunion in Clippers is a divine intervention on the duo potentially achieving what they always deserved to have, an NBA championship ring story was originally reported by Fadeaway World on Jul 29, 2025, where it first appeared.

Teenage kicks: McIntosh, 12-year-old Yu set to rule the pool at LA 2028

The Los Angeles Olympics are three years away, but Summer McIntosh showed at the swimming world championships why she will be one of the stars of the Games while 12-year-old Yu Zidi is shaping up to be a major threat. The United States also demonstrated that tales of their demise were exaggerated as teams embarked on the long road to the LA 2028 at the World Aquatic Championships in Singapore over the past week. Canada ended the world championships on Sunday with four gold medals, all won by the 18-year-old phenomenon McIntosh. Yet it was the one that got away that rankled with the teenager, having been forced to settle for bronze in the 800m freestyle which American great Katie Ledecky won for a seventh time. It meant that three-time Paris Olympics gold medallist McIntosh fell just short of matching Michael Phelps's feat of five individual titles at a single world championships. "I think it's just going to keep me hungry and push, and keep moving forward," said McIntosh. "Even if I were to get five golds, I would still want more. That's just my mentality." McIntosh broke three world records in a matter of days at the Canadian trials in June and then powered to gold in the 200m and 400m individual medleys, 400m freestyle and 200m butterfly in Singapore. Chinese schoolgirl Yu became the youngest medallist in world championships history, taking home a relay bronze. Racing against McIntosh, Yu narrowly missed out on an individual medal by finishing fourth in each of her events -- the 400m medley, 200m butterfly and 200m medley where she touched just 0.06 seconds from a bronze medal. Already her rivals are predicting Yu will be a major force at the 2028 Olympics. Canada's Mary-Sophie Harvey, who held off Yu for bronze in the 200m medley, said: "I think going into LA we're probably going to see her a lot more." American Alex Walsh, who took silver, said Yu was "phenomenally talented at such a young age". But there are also concerns about the physical and mental toll on someone so young. "Now she's gonna have a lot of pressure," said Harvey. - USA bite back - The United States, who will be under huge pressure to deliver in the pool at their home Games, endured a turbulent time in Singapore. Most of the squad had to battle acute gastroenteritis following a pre-competition camp in Thailand. That led to stinging criticism from Phelps and fellow Olympic swimming great Ryan Lochte, with wider concerns about the management of the team in and out of the pool. Lochte shared an image on Instagram depicting a funeral that featured a tombstone inscribed: "In loving memory of United States Swimming." "They set the bar high -- until they stopped reaching for it," the inscription said, with Lochte adding the caption: "Call it a funeral or call it a fresh start. We've got 3 years." The slight did not go down well in Singapore, with three-time Olympic gold medallist Bobby Finke among the American swimmers biting back. "There's just so much stupid stuff that's getting said," said Finke. The United States set two relay world records in Singapore and topped the final medals table with nine golds, one ahead of Australia. Third were France, with Leon Marchand blowing off the post-Paris Olympics cobwebs to smash Lochte's 200m individual medley world record from 2011. The 23-year-old Marchand, the face of the Paris Games with four individual golds, also romped to victory in the 400m medley. "It's not perfect, because it's never perfect, but it's more than I expected, especially the world record in the 200m medley," he said. "It shows that I still have a passion for swimming, that I love it." pst/dh

Rob Pelinka talks about the Lakers' offseason additions

The Los Angeles Lakers achieved their most important objective this offseason when they got Luka Doncic to agree to a three-year contract extension on Saturday. Saturday was the first day he was eligible to sign an extension, and this move will ensure that he will remain a member of the team past this coming season. One can now say the Lakers have had a very solid and successful offseason. They previously addressed their gaping hole at the center position by signing Deandre Ayton, and they also brought in young and promising forward Jake LaRavia and former Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart. At Saturday's press conference to announce Doncic's extension, general manager Rob Pelinka implied that the Lakers would like to make at least one more move. However, he seemed pleased with the moves that have been made. 'It's the centerpiece of the foundation piece,' Pelinka said of building around Doncic. 'I think in conversations with Luka, it was really important for us to get a rim, lob-catching center and we feel like getting Deandre Ayton was huge. It's gonna unlock so much in Luka's game, as you can tell with pick-and-roll reads, he's the best in the world and I think Deandre is gonna help. Our thesis for our roster was to get younger, and I think getting some 3-and-D players like a Jake LaRavia who we could add, at his age, 42% 3-point shooter and having wings that can shoot and play both sides of the ball I think is also important. And then being able to add Marcus Smart, Defensive Player of the Year a couple years ago, I think he has a chip on his shoulder to get back to that level and put the league on notice. 'I think having players like that surrounding both Luka and LeBron, guys that can defend multiple positions, is really important. So we like the upgrades we were able to make to the roster, but by no means are we gonna be satisfied. I think every year, we're on an infinite cycle to try to improve this team to win championships and we'll stay committed to that work.' Ayton could be close to the ideal center to pair with Doncic, at least offensively. He's a definite lob threat who has a nice touch around the basket, as well as a low-post game and the ability to hit jumpers out to just beyond 15 feet or so. Ayton is also a good rebounder who will help Los Angeles on the boards, an area in which it has been weak for the last couple of seasons. LaRavia is a dead-eye 3-point shooter who seems to have some upward potential on the defensive end. Speaking of the defensive end, Smart has been one of the NBA's best in that department for years, and he could be poised for a return to form after a couple of injury-riddled seasons. The team has the expiring contracts of Gabe Vincent and Maxi Kleber, as well as one future first-round draft to offer in a trade between now and the February trade deadline. It could also look to flip forward Rui Hachimura or even guard Austin Reaves if it chooses to do so. The Lakers may not be true championship contenders, but they're close, and they could surprise people this season.
