Paul Skenes notches 9 strikeouts, leading Pirates to 3-0 win over Dodgers

This time around, Skenes prevailed with 6 1/3 scoreless innings in Pittsburgh's 3-0 victory. The right-hander notched nine strikeouts with no walks and five hits allowed.
'I think that he's one of the best in the game,' Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after the game. 'Tonight, we really couldn't muster much.'
However, Roberts also felt that Dodgers hitters helped Skenes out by continuing a trend of chasing pitches out of their hitting zone.
"I think that it's hard to hit guys that good when you're chasing the hitting zone vs. locking in on your own area," Roberts added. "I thought tonight, as well as days preceding, we just are not as disciplined as we need to be in certain areas of the hitting zone."

Three relievers followed Skenes and kept the Dodgers off the scoreboard for the remaining 2 2/3 innings, giving up just one hit. David Bednar, back with the Pirates after being demoted to the minors in early April, struck out two in the ninth for his second save.
Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts batted a combined 0-for-8 at the top of the Dodgers' batting order, giving Freddie Freeman and Teoscar Hernández no opportunities to drive a runner in. Freeman provided the Dodgers' best chance to score in the fourth inning, leading off with a double and advancing to third on an error by Bryan Reynolds. But Skenes retired the next three batters to strand Freeman.
Skenes has won two of his three starts versus the Dodgers going back to last season, allowing 7 runs in 11 innings in his first two matchups. He now has a 3.63 ERA against Los Angeles, averaging 13 strikeouts per nine innings.
'This is where baseball gets really fun, I think,' Skenes said afterward, via the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. '... [Shohei] Ohtani saw my pitches today. Freddie [Freeman], I think, saw all my pitches today. And aside from today, they've all seen all my pitches. I'm not hiding anything from them, and they're not hiding anything from me. I've seen how they attacked me, and they've seen how I attack them.'

Yoshinobu Yamamoto allowed his first earned run in his past four starts, but walked four batters and gave up five hits. Yet with no run support from the Dodgers' lineup, he took his second loss of the season, dropping his record to 3-2.
The Dodgers have lost three in a row and four of their past five games, during which they've averaged under four runs per contest. The skid has dropped Los Angeles to third in the NL West, one game behind the San Diego Padres and a half-game below the San Francisco Giants.

The United States also demonstrated that tales of their demise were exaggerated as teams embarked on the long road to the LA 2028 at the World Aquatic Championships in Singapore over the past week. Canada ended the world championships on Sunday with four gold medals, all won by the 18-year-old phenomenon McIntosh. Yet it was the one that got away that rankled with the teenager, having been forced to settle for bronze in the 800m freestyle which American great Katie Ledecky won for a seventh time. It meant that three-time Paris Olympics gold medallist McIntosh fell just short of matching Michael Phelps's feat of five individual titles at a single world championships. The Los Angeles Lakers achieved their most important objective this offseason when they got Luka Doncic to agree to a three-year contract extension on Saturday. Saturday was the first day he was eligible to sign an extension, and this move will ensure that he will remain a member of the team past this coming season. One can now say the Lakers have had a very solid and successful offseason. They previously addressed their gaping hole at the center position by signing Deandre Ayton, and they also brought in young and promising forward Jake LaRavia and former Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart. At Saturday's press conference to announce Doncic's extension, general manager Rob Pelinka implied that the Lakers would like to make at least one more move. However, he seemed pleased with the moves that have been made. 'It's the centerpiece of the foundation piece,' Pelinka said of building around Doncic. 'I think in conversations with Luka, it was really important for us to get a rim, lob-catching center and we feel like getting Deandre Ayton was huge. It's gonna unlock so much in Luka's game, as you can tell with pick-and-roll reads, he's the best in the world and I think Deandre is gonna help. Our thesis for our roster was to get younger, and I think getting some 3-and-D players like a Jake LaRavia who we could add, at his age, 42% 3-point shooter and having wings that can shoot and play both sides of the ball I think is also important. And then being able to add Marcus Smart, Defensive Player of the Year a couple years ago, I think he has a chip on his shoulder to get back to that level and put the league on notice. 'I think having players like that surrounding both Luka and LeBron, guys that can defend multiple positions, is really important. So we like the upgrades we were able to make to the roster, but by no means are we gonna be satisfied. I think every year, we're on an infinite cycle to try to improve this team to win championships and we'll stay committed to that work.' Ayton could be close to the ideal center to pair with Doncic, at least offensively. He's a definite lob threat who has a nice touch around the basket, as well as a low-post game and the ability to hit jumpers out to just beyond 15 feet or so. Ayton is also a good rebounder who will help Los Angeles on the boards, an area in which it has been weak for the last couple of seasons. LaRavia is a dead-eye 3-point shooter who seems to have some upward potential on the defensive end. Speaking of the defensive end, Smart has been one of the NBA's best in that department for years, and he could be poised for a return to form after a couple of injury-riddled seasons. The team has the expiring contracts of Gabe Vincent and Maxi Kleber, as well as one future first-round draft to offer in a trade between now and the February trade deadline. It could also look to flip forward Rui Hachimura or even guard Austin Reaves if it chooses to do so. The Lakers may not be true championship contenders, but they're close, and they could surprise people this season.
