Jafaican star Peter Andre breaks his silence on problematic movie's backlash

Daily Mirror21-05-2025
Peter Andre has spoken out about the backlash against his new film Jafaican, which sees the Mysterious Girl singer portray a wheeler-dealer who poses as a violent Jamaican gangster
Singer-turned-actor Peter Andre has hit back at critics slamming his latest movie Jafaican, in which he stars as a faux gangster. The heartthrob behind Mysterious Girl takes centre stage in Fredi Nwaka's latest comedy romp – playing hustler Gary Buckle.
The character tries to score a windfall by pretending to be mob boss Denton 'Kill Man' Powell donning a fake dreadlock wig and putting on a Jamaican accent.

While Jafaican has garnered positive reviews since its unveiling, the flick has been marred by accusations of cultural appropriation and being labelled "tone-deaf" by some viewers. Nevertheless, Peter Andre rebuffed the backlash aiming at his latest venture.

The pop icon advises skeptics: "I think it's very easy to criticise something based on a trailer. I would say: 'Go and watch the film first,' you will see what the film is about and you will see the context."
He continued to tell the Daily Star: "A critic should also be able to criticise, so I understand how it is."
Andre, acknowledging that the film won't be everyone's cup of tea, encouraged naysayers to view it before casting judgment. In defence of his work, Peter commented: "In regards to critics, I think it is really important for people to all have different opinions.
"I don't think it is right to just expect everyone to like what you're doing, but I've always said that, you know, in anything I've ever done I've always had people saying: 'Don't do that, you shouldn't do that, that's not the right song to release, that's not a good video clip."
The artist-turned-thespian, acclaimed for roles in the likes of Mr. Peabody and Sherman, David Brent: Life on the Road and Keith Lemon: The Film, divulged his reasons for embracing his latest character.

Refusing to be swayed by naysayers, he stated: "If I sat and listened to everybody telling me what not to do, I would never have achieved anything! I think sometimes you have to just go outside of your comfort zone and push yourself."
The movie chronicles the mishaps of a London crook who must scrape together £35,000 to pay for his grandmother's care home expenses. When he catches wind of a heist that could solve all his problems, Gary jets off to Jamaica, only to find himself in a downward spiral.
As locals cotton on to his impersonation of Denton 'Kill Man' Powell to snare a fortune, Gary finds himself in a tight spot. 'Jafaican' is currently showing in select ODEON Cinemas.
Peter's kids Princess and Junior were by his side at a recent a red carpet screening for his latest film. The event in London saw the family attend the Genesis Cinema for the private VIP event, posing for photographs ahead of the much-discussed film's debut.
While promoting the movie on Australian TV earlier in the month, Peter said of the criticism: "Well, to be fair, I mean, I think it's good to get all sorts of feedback. I mean, this is not ... it's my first lead role but I've done quite a few roles before. And all of them, I've played different characters."

Katie Price reveals she is getting a new tattoo as she shares half-naked snap after daughter Princess moved out of her home amid her reality show ban

Katie Price has revealed she is getting a new tattoo as she shared a half-naked snap on Instagram. The former glamour model, 47, revealed earlier this week that her daughter Princess has moved out of her home. Katie said the move came due to Princess filming a reality TV show with her dad Peter Andre's management, The Can Group - who have banned Katie from appearing in the series. Brushing off the drama, Katie took to Instagram on Friday to share that she had opted for a new inking. A racy snap showed the star lying on the bed at the tattoo parlour with her array of other back inkings on display. 'Tattoo time [nervous face],' she wrote - but didn't revealed where or what the new tattoo would be. It comes just one day after Katie revealed her daughter Princess has moved out of her home. The 18-year-old, who she shares with ex Peter Andre, has embarked on her own career, with Princess currently filming her very own reality show. And speaking to sister Sophie on the latest episode of The Katie Price Show podcast, Katie told how her eldest daughter is no longer living with her due to filming her ITV programme - which Katie is not allowed to appear on. But as she discussed the situation, the former glamour model, 47 - who was recently banned from her girl's 18th birthday - couldn't help but make a dig at Peter and his management company, Can Associates, who are making the show. She told Sophie: 'Princess was living with me but because she's doing her documentary, and I'm not even allowed to breathe near the documentary, she has been predominantly staying at her dads while she is filming.' The subject came up as Katie spoke about her hunt for a new home amid the sale of her £5k-a-month rental property, with Sophie suggesting that Katie only needs a three-bed home for her and her youngest children, with a sofa bed for when the other kids visit. However, Katie was quick to insist that Princess would soon be back, while also noting that second eldest son Junior and his girlfriend Jasmine may move back in too as they do not like renting. She shared: 'It's's only because she has been filming that she has been at Pete's because obviously I'm not allowed anywhere near it. She has only got about two weeks left of filming.' Katie's words comes just weeks after she blasted Peter's management, The Can Group, after she was banned from their daughter Princess' 18th birthday. The TV personality went on a rant about the awkward snub with her sister Sophie in a recent episode of the podcast. MailOnline's Katie Hind revealed Katie was unable to attend Princess' celebrations because the event was being filmed for her forthcoming fly-on-the-wall ITV television series - which Katie has been banned from appearing on. In the episode, Katie said: 'Princess is now officially an adult so mummy and Princess can now go out together. If certain people would let her be seen with me.' Sophie said: 'I noticed in her 18th birthday pictures she was wearing the shoes you bought her for Christmas.' 'Oh did she? I love that', said Katie. Katie added: 'Everyone knows she's doing this documentary - and I'm not in it. Certain people don't think it's good for Princess to be seen with me. Certain people that used to look after me.' Her sister said: 'You aren't on brand Katie. You are too risky Katie that's why. Katie added: 'It's pathetic. I'm her mother. It's so sad. When certain people who used to look after me are now looking after...' Her sister Sophie then urged Katie to 'save it for another day.' Katie was allegedly referring to her old PR team, who now manage her ex husband Peter, 52, and their children Junior and Princess.

Princess Andre, 18, looks radiant as she enjoys lavish Mexico holiday with family of dad Peter's wife Emily - after moving out of mum Katie Price's home

Princess Andre looked radiant as she enjoyed a lavish summer holiday to Mexico with the family of her dad Peter's wife Emily MacDonagh. The 18-year-old, the daughter of Katie Price and Peter Andre, jetted off to Mexico City this week with Emily's younger brothers Will and Joe. Princess, who celebrated her 18th birthday last month, looked radiant as she stepped out for the evening on Thursday in a white crochet summer set. She donned a white strapped crochet tie-up crop top, paired with linen wide-leg trousers and silver sandals. Princess accessorised the look with a white leather bucked handbag and a collection of black and silver bracelets, as well as a heart pendant necklace. The trip comes after her mum Katie revealed that Princess has moved out of her home because the former glamour model is banned from appearing in her daughter's upcoming reality show. Princess's step uncle Will also sported a white ensemble whereas Joe wore a blue polo shirt, so she captioned the post: 'Clearly Joe missed the white memo.' Her step mum Emily commented: 'Awwww guys, love my bros xxx.' Princess has embarked on her own career and is currently filming her very own reality show.
