Thomas Detry fears US Open 'bloodbath' if punishing Pennsylvania weather adds another dimension

Daily Record14-06-2025
The Belgian star admits wind could make it even more testing at Oakmont as golf's elite already battle the unforgiving course
Title-chasing Thomas Detry reckons it could be a bloodbath at Oakmont if the wind gets up to join the rain in Pennsylvania.
The smooth Belgian is still in with a shot of US Open glory despite a wobble on the Friday back-nine which saw him drop from a share of the lead to five behind leader Sam Burns.

Detry, who has been the playing partner of Scotland's Bob MacIntyre at the Zurich Classic in the past two stagings, is enjoying the challenge of the set-up and said after round one: 'It just puts so much pressure on every single part of your game constantly, whether it's off the tee, whether it's putting green, whether it's around the greens or it's the iron shots into the green.

'Luckily, the wind wasn't too much up, but it could be a bloodbath out here if it suddenly starts to blow.'
Detry maintained is stance on Oakmont at the of round two and said: 'I just need to be so disciplined on every single shot, and I've felt like I have been, but maybe just that one bit where I was just trying to be a little bit more aggressive on the putt and then leave yourself another three or four-footer.
'They're tough to read out here. It's getting dark and there's footsteps everywhere. Discipline, number one key out here.
'The best part of my game has been driving. I really have been hitting loads of fairways which is, I think, a key out here.
'If you're out of the fairway, you're pretty much useless, so I think that's the key.

'If I can avoid making a double bogey on those next two days, I will have achieved what I wanted to achieve.
'So that's sort of the goal. And keep playing well. I'm driving it well, feel like I'm hitting my fade again nicely, so I'm sort of visualising fairways quite well and it's really helpful.'
Victor Perez is enjoying himself with a hole-in-one to help tame the beast. The ace was a special moment for the Frenchman, but he admits it's tough to keep on top of the Oakmont concerns and he said:
'Back in the Bahamas where I live. I guess I'm on a hole-in-one run at the moment. It might dry up for the next so years now, who know, so, yeah, really happy.
'It's definitely not easy by any means. I think the rough is going to get patted down hopefully.
'I think some of the wide misses are probably going to be able to maybe get away with it, so might be hitting more drivers, but at the same time you can still get penalised. The bunkers around the fairways are just as penalising, sometimes you're just trying to advance.'

Tony Bloom speaks to Hearts fans about plans for the club - and challenge to Celtic and Rangers

A Foundation of Hearts event titled '90 Minutes with Tony Bloom' began at 7pm at Tynecastle Park as supporters gathered to hear from the British entrepreneur. Bloom is chairman and majority shareholder at English Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion. He also holds minority stakes in the Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise and Australian outfit Melbourne Victory. In June this year, he completed a deal to buy a 29 per cent stake in Hearts, although his shares do not entitle him to vote on club matters. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad In his first in-person address to supporters, Bloom was welcomed by around 500 people inside Tynecastle's Gorgie Suite. After thanking the Foundation and Hearts chairwoman Ann Budge, he answered questions from club media and then responded to pre-submitted public questions. First, he explained how his investment came about and what he wants to achieve with Hearts. Bloom made it clear that he intends to topple Scottish football's Glasgow duopoly of Celtic and Rangers. 'I've been owner and chairman of Brighton for 16 years. A few years ago, I was looking to get involved with another football club. We looked all over Europe and landed on Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium. That has gone very well, perhaps better than I thought. A couple of years ago I was thinking of Scotland. Growing up in the 1970s and 80s, it was very different to today. Scottish football was talked about in the newspapers much more than other leagues - Italy, Spain - so I've always followed Scottish football. I like to see the Scottish national team doing well. Growing up it was always about England, I know that's not quite reciprocated across the Border. 'A lot of you will remember 1986. I'm sorry to have mentioned it but somebody scored two late goals. I backed Hearts at 8-1 to win the league and going into the last game it was looking very pretty. Needed against Dundee and it didn't quite happen. I believe I can make a difference here. I don't want to see a league dominated by two teams. I did look at clubs in Scotland. As soon as I met Ann and looked at Hearts, I knew this was the club I liked to invest in and here I am today. I think it's really important for Scottish football that it's not just a one or two-club show - and it's not going to be from now on. 'I welcome the investment from other clubs outside the Old Firm, I think that's really good for Scottish football. It's not good at all that Scottish clubs, historically, have not been doing well in Europe. That lowers the co-efficient, so even if you win the league, like Celtic this year, you have to win knockout games to get into the group stage of the Champions League. I'm very confident that the co-efficient will change over the next few years, it will be really good for Scottish football. I hope it will be good news for Hearts.' More to follow....

Charles Leclerc makes admission about his Ferrari F1 future amid 'obsession'

Charles Leclerc has been able to win races at Ferrari but, in seven years with the team in Formula 1, has not yet had the chance to challenge for championship glory Charles Leclerc said he is "obsessed" with winning Formula 1 titles with Ferrari. The Monegasque was responding to a question about his future in his seventh season with the team, having not yet had the chance to fight for the World championship during that long tenure. ‌ Leclerc, 27, is of a generation of special drivers who graduated to F1 with the 'future World champion' tag placed upon them. But the Monegasque has yet to have the chance to live up to that billing with Ferrari enduring a long title drought stretching back to 2008. ‌ They came reasonably close in the constructors' championship last year, keeping McLaren honest until the final day. But they have failed to provide another stiff challenge this year and the drivers' title looks set to be a two-horse race between Lando Norris and his team-mate Oscar Piastri. ‌ McLaren took over from Red Bull as the dominant force on the grid, which delivered four drivers' titles for Max Verstappen who is the same age as Leclerc. Both Norris and Piastri are younger than the Monegasque. As frustrating as that must be to Leclerc, he continues to insist that the privilege of representing the famous red team means more to him than challenging for a championship elsewhere. "I drive for Ferrari and that means a lot," he said. ‌ "Being part of this team and of Ferrari is an honour for me. My main goal right now is to bring it back to winning ways, and I owe Ferrari so much because they brought me into F1, they brought me in Ferrari. "We need to win now. Of course I am not indifferent to other drivers winning, like Max or Lando and Oscar now, but I am focused on bringing this team back to the top. I will do anything with Fred [Vasseur, team principal] and with Lewis [Hamilton, team-mate] to win again. That is my only obsession." Ferrari's failure to compete with McLaren this year led to speculation in the Italian press over the future of team boss Vasseur. But that was put to bed this week when Ferrari confirmed a new multi-year contract extension for the Frenchman, who joined in early 2023. We have definitely made progress in the right direction. We are certainly not satisfied with where we are, but we are happy with the steps forward. "Before the start of the season there was a lot of hype around the team, and I think that changed the perception a bit of our season. Because, I will say it again, we are not where we want to be. Ferrari can only be satisfied with winning, and we know that well. We are fighting with for the second place in the championship so there is still a long way to go, but the progress is encouraging."

Not after seeing his four-shot overnight lead halved straight away after an opening double-bogey 6. And not after seeing experienced Frenchman Julien Quesne push him all the way to the finish. It was mission accomplished, though, for Daniel Young. After finishing third then second in his previous two starts on the HotelPlanner Tour, the 33-year-old maintained the progression by winning the £250,000 Farmfoods Scottish Challenge supported by The R&A at Schloss Roxburghe near Kelso. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Daniel Young shows off the trophy after winning the Farmfoods Scottish Challenge on day four of the Farmfoods Scottish Challenge supported by The R&A at Schloss Roxburghe in Kelso |Signing off with a 70 in blustery conditions at the Borders venue, Young finished with a 19-under-par total, pipping Quesne, a two-time DP World Tour winner, by a shot in a thrilling finish, with another home player, Euan Walker, finishing two shots further back in third place. Young became the first Scot to land the coveted crown since David Law at Aviemore in 2018 and only fourth home contender to land the title, with Jamie McLeary and George Murray being the other home winners in 2009 and 2010 respectively. 'Yeah, buzzing,' said Young of making the breakthrough on the DP World Tour's feeder circuit on his 104th appearance. 'Absolutely delighted and I think I am still lost for words (laughing).' That was in reference to his winner's speech, which was probably one of the shortest in the history of the game. 'None of this was planned,' he joked of that. Young joined Law, who landed the D+D REAL Czech Challenge last month, as a winner on the circuit this year, with both players now on course to secure seats at the top of the table next season. Law, who tied for tenth, is up to fourth in the Road to Mallorca Rankings, with Young jumping eight spots to sixth. The top 20 will secure DP World Tour cards at the end of the season-ending Rolex Grand Final in November. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Yeah, I don't think it gets any better,' admitted Young, who lost to Bob MacIntyre in the final of the 2015 Scottish Amateur final at Muirfield, of landing his breakthrough win, which was worth just over £46,000, on home soil. 'Honestly, you don't pick where you win. I would have taken winning anywhere but this is extra special, that's for sure.' His opening tee shot in the closing circuit ended up behind a tree, leaving him having to play out sideways. It looked as though he might get away with a par after a lovely wedge for this third shot only to three putt from around eight feet. 'Honestly, I actually felt fine on the first tee, which is bizarre,' insisted the Kingsbarns Links-attached player. 'I didn't actually think my tee shot was that bad. It must have got a ropey bounce and I was right up the back of a tree. I did the smart thing and I thought I'd stiffed it, hitting a great wedge shot, but, from there, it was careless.' His lead was down to just one shot at the turn, with his closest challenger at that point being the young Belgian, James Meyer de Beco. Young's cushion was up to three again after the 12th before all three players made birdie-2s at the 13th from inside 12 feet. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Daniel Young celebrates winning the Farmfoods Scottish Challenge |Then, on the back of stiffing his tee shot for another 2 at the 15th before also making a birdie from close range at the 16th, Quesne had closed the gap to just one and the 44-year-old did his best to force a play-off by also giving himself good chances at the closing two holes. It was a relief for Young that his title rival couldn't convert either of them and no-one could deny that this was a deserved title triumph. 'Just stressful,' declared Young in reply to being asked to sum up his day. 'Winning is hard. I knew guys would be throwing the kitchen sink at me. James came at me early and then Julien was coming at me fast at the end. Obviously I managed to just hold them off. I struggled to make a putt today, but I made my fair share over the first three days, so I am certainly not going to grumble.' After his early blip, he covered the remaining 17 holes in three under, getting up and down from the fringe on the left to seal the win. 'I was still two head (after the first hole) so just had to reset,' he said. 'It was a bit stressful, but I knew I was playing well. I knew I had to steady the ship, hitting fairways and greens. Maybe after the first I don't think I missed a green until the last. The golf was solid. The gusts were all over the place, so it was a tricky day.' On the back of his best finish of the season, Walker climbed 11 spots to sit 14th in the Road to Mallorca Rankings. Though there are still nine regular events remaining, it is shaping up to be the best season for Scots on the circuit since four players - Law, MacIntyre, Grant Forrest and Liam Johnston - graduated to the main tour at the end of the 2019 campaign. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Yeah, a really good week,' said Walker of his effort, having signed off with a 68 that included a burst of four birdies in five holes on the back nine. 'I hadn't played well in this event when it was at Newmachar, so I am pleased to have changed that at a new venue this week. Third on my own here is an absolutely massive finish.'
