Young Carers Action Day 2025: What is it all about?

BBC News12-03-2025
March 12 2025 is Young Carers Action Day, a campaign organised by the charity Carers Trust to shine a light on the care work done by hundreds of thousands of children across the UK.The charity celebrates the work of young carers every year on a date in mid-March.This year's theme is 'Give Me a Break', which was chosen by young carers connected with the charity. The Carers Trust say that, according to the most recent census data, at least 16,000 young carers in the UK are caring for 50 hours a week or more - some of whom are five years old. To mark Young Carers Action Day 2025, a group of young carers are taking an open top bus to Westminster - where the government works - to call for more support.
What is a young carer and what do they do?
Young carers are children and young people who look after loved ones with an illness or disability. They may take on adult responsibilities, for example they might need to help keep the house clean, or help family with medication and appointments. Young carers may also have to use a lot of their free time to help out at home. The Carers Trust surveyed 423 young and adult carers, and found that almost three-quarters (72%) said they miss out on the holidays because they provide care. Many also felt they weren't able to do a lot of the things most other children get to do, with nearly half saying they miss out on friendships and hobbies. One young carer in the study said: "I feel bad for taking breaks and when I have time for myself I'm always thinking that I could be doing something else to help out."
What support is there for young carers?
Charities like the Carers Trust and The Children's Society provide support and help for young people who are carers.Young carers in the UK also have a right to be given the information they need and have an assessment of their own needs. This is called a young carer assessment, or a young carer statement in Scotland. This can help decide what kind of help a young person and their family needs. Local authorities - also known as councils - are responsible for young carer assessments in lots of cases. Local authorities they are in charge of lots of things in our local areas, including things like schools, traffic and bin collections. But teachers can and schools can also provide support.

Two charities have quit a strategic network set up by the Scottish Government to tackle long Covid, citing frustration at delays to using funding in what has been described as a 'damning' decision. Long Covid Scotland and Long Covid Kids have penned a formal resignation letter citing the reasons for leaving the National Strategic Network for Long-Term Effects of Covid-19. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Two long Covid charities have quit a key Scottish Government network. Picture: Michael Gillen The Government body had been set up with the aim of improving the health and wellbeing of those living with long-term Covid effects. But the bosses of the respective charities have accused SNP ministers of 'inaction and broken promises', with the Government accused of failing to spend £4.5 million in funding allocated in the Scottish Budget in December last year. Opposition parties said those who had shared 'painful' experiences of suffering from long Covid had been 'shamefully ignored and sidelined' by the Government. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The charities, which were founding contributors to the long Covid network set up in 2022, listed systemic failure, lack of leadership and a breakdown in trust as reasons for quitting the body. Jane Ormerod, chair of Long Covid Scotland, said: 'In December 2024, the Scottish Government announced a £4.5m non-recurring fund. Yet by July 2025, not a penny has been allocated. 'What was framed as a hopeful investment now stands as a symbol of inaction and broken promises.' Helen Goss, chief operating officer and Scottish lead at Long Covid Kids, added: 'We entered 2025 with cautious optimism. Instead, six months on, we are forced to resign from a system that continues to fail the very people it was created to support.' SNP finance secretary Shona Robison About 82 per cent of people with long Covid struggle to access care, reports commissioned by the strategic network last year claimed. A statement issued on behalf of both charities said: 'The Scottish Government remains functionally absent from the network, offering no leadership, no oversight, and no enforcement of its own policies. 'Workstreams have stalled, strategic oversight commitments [are] unmet. Internal discussions now reference 'wind down' and 'rollback', rather than delivery. Some services have now closed, despite funding and a mandate to operate until March 2026.' Jackie Baillie, Dr Sandesh Gulhane and Alex Cole-Hamilton, co-conveners of the Scottish Parliament's long Covid cross-party group, said in a joint statement: 'It is a damning indictment of the SNP's lack of leadership that Long Covid Scotland and Long Covid Kids have had to resign from the Strategic Long Covid Network because of the Scottish Government's failures. 'Those who have shared their painful and personal experiences of long Covid in good faith have been shamefully ignored and sidelined, leaving people feeling unseen and unheard. The Scottish Government has lost the confidence of the long Covid and ME community. Lisa Snowdon loves this hair serum that's 'must have for hair loss' now 20% off

With 50% of women experiencing hair loss due to a variety of factors, Lookfantastic has launched a 20% off deal on some of hair rejuvenating brand Nioxin's bestselling products, including its Anti-Hair Loss Serum Stress, hormonal changes, postpartum recovery, diet or simply wearing tight hair styles can all lead to us experiencing some sort of hair loss and thinning, regardless of age. While its something 50% of women will experience this in their life, a relatively normal amount to shed is between 50 to 100 hairs per day. But for those for whom hair loss is a little more than this, showcased in more hair in hairbrush, parting become wider and more bald spots, this byproduct can often leave a person lacking in confidence. One brand that has received a lot of love for its anti-hair loss products, including model and Celebrity Masterchef star Lisa Snowdon - who's been open about her own hair loss journey - is NIOXIN. It's currently running a promotion to mark Hair Loss Awareness month that sees 20% knocked off the price of some of its best-sellers on Lookfantastic. One product included in this deal is the 4.7 star rated Anti-Hair Loss Serum Hair Growth Serum for Thinning Hair, which usually retails at £57.50 but is now £46. The NIOXIN Anti-Hair Loss Serum Hair Growth Serum for Thinning Hair is a leave-in serum that has been designed to minimise the risk of breakage and hair fall out. Lookfantastic shares that beauty fans who have used this product have experienced 'crazy' results in as little as eight weeks, with 93% of participants in a clinical study experiencing improved hair anchorage. The serum - which is recommended to be used alongside the brand's shampoo and conditioner - is enriched with hair follicle stimulating caffeine, lauric acid and niacinamide. As well as SANDALORE™, which helps improve hair anchorage, the formula works to nourish and protect the scalp in order to promote optimal conditions for healthy-looking hair growth. Claiming to delivering stronger, thicker hair from the first use, the serum requires 15 pumps to the scalp (or dry or wet hair) which are to massaged in - and not washed out. This NIOXIN product rivals the likes of brands such as UKLASH and Skin + Me, whose hair regrowth products have received rave reviews from beauty buffs and celebrities alike. UKLASH's Hair Growth Serum costs a little less at £40 for a one time purchase and uses active ingredients like AnaGain™(Pea Sprout Extract), Phytic Acid and Turmeric to 'revitalise and stimulate hair growth' at the scalp. It also uses Lemon Fruit Water to condition and protect the hair follicle. Skin + Me's The Drops for hair growth are an even more affordable option as they're currently on sale for £14.99 down from £34.99. With major results reported in three to six months with consistent use, the Skin + Me formula claims to 'reverse loss', 'stop thinning' and 'restore density' with its scientifically proven active ingredients. The NIOXIN serum - which Lisa Snowdon has said is a 'game changer' for thinning hair - has delivered 'visible' results from shoppers, with one five star review raving on the Lookfantastic website: "I've been using Nioxin Anti-Hair Loss Serum for a few weeks, and I'm pretty impressed. The serum is easy to apply just pump once on your palm and spread. It doesn't feel greasy or heavy on my scalp. "I've noticed a slight improvement in the thickness of my hair, I have little baldness on my side head and it seems to be growing back in that area where it was thinning. It doesn't have a strong smell, which I like. "While it's still early to tell if it'll completely stop hair loss, I've definitely seen some positive changes, and I feel more confident about my hair's health. Definitely worth trying it." The serum has received strong reviews, with one shopper remarking: "I have been using the Nioxin Anti-Hair Loss Serum Growth Serum for thinning hair for a few months now, and I am genuinely impressed with the results. Initially, I was sceptical about trying another product for hair thinning, but this serum has exceeded my expectations." They added: "Over time, my hair has begun to feel thicker, and I'm even noticing some regrowth in areas that were visibly thinning. I also appreciate that the serum has a pleasant, subtle scent, unlike many other treatments I've tried. "It's now a staple in my hair care routine, and I highly recommend it to anyone dealing with thinning hair or looking to improve their scalp health. Nioxin has truly delivered with this product, and I feel much more confident about my hair than I have in years!" "I've been using this for about 8 months now and the amount of hair that I shed now in comparison to before is crazy," said another. "It really does help with my excess shedding and also my hairline is looking a bit fuller in the patches that were thinning I think consistency is key with this." Someone else noted how they saw results in as little as one week and said: "The best hair grow serum for hair! I could see results after for weeks of using it. You have to be consistent with the product but it's working well. Great value. Highly recommend" While many people did see some results, some have struggled, with one person saying: "Have used it few times, not seen any difference yet, will persevere for longer, isn't making my hair any worse so will just keep going for a while yet." Someone else noted on the Nioxin serum: "Very great product! Since I began using this system my hair loss has slowed down considerably. When using the shampoo with the conditioner and the serum, it has certainly contributed to the health and thickness of my hair."

Bedfordshire woman with ME criticises health plan for condition

A woman living with myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) said she has "lost faith" in receiving "meaningful support" after the government released a new support plan for the also known as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), is a neurological disease which affects about 390,000 people in the UK. On 22 July the government launched a new delivery plan to improve education around the illness, as well as increase funding, research and medical training for health practitioners. Maddie Walker, 51, from Bedfordshire, said she was "disappointed" in how the plan lacked any "real change to improve the quality of life for sufferers". Ms Walker said she was healthy and active before she developed severe ME and was now unable to leave the house without a wheelchair and has carers visit her multiple times a described living with the condition as "mind-numbing" and that she felt "despondent". The condition's symptoms include fatigue, muscle and joint weakness, cognitive dysfunction and post-exertional malaise. Misdiagnosis Ms Walker was initially diagnosed with fibromyalgia with fatigue, a condition causing muscular pain all over the body. As a result of the crossover in symptoms, Ms Walker's ME was not recognised initially, leading her to be recommended treatment that was not tailored to both conditions."Something I feel really strongly about is people being given the right information at the point of diagnosis because if I had known what I was doing was harmful, I might not be in this situation."Ms Walker said she has a "terrible, really poor quality of life" and that "hundreds of thousands of people have once again been let down" by the new delivery plan. "We just aren't important enough," she said. The ME Association (MEA) said the government must go "much further" to improve medical care and funding for "much needed" biomedical research. It added that currently most research studies for ME/CFS are funded by the charity added there were numerous strengths to the plan, including the approach to broaden education about the illness in the NHS and in schools. Dr Charles Shepherd, a medical adviser with the MEA, said the plan does not align with the 2021 National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines, which suggested making referral services more accessible in hospitals. Ashley Dalton, the MP for West Lancashire and minister for public health and prevention, said: "[The] plan will help tackle the stigma and lack of awareness of this condition through improved training for NHS staff." A spokesperson of Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) said: "We acknowledge there is more to be done and will continue to build on the foundations of these actions well beyond the publication of this plan."There was a "clear commitment" to achieving "meaningful change" for the ME/CFS community, it using neighbourhood health services, the DHSC said it will ensure patients can access quality care closer to home.
