What is a young carer and what do they do?
Young carers are children and young people who look after loved ones with an illness or disability.They may take on adult responsibilities, for example they might need to help keep the house clean, or help family with medication and appointments. Young carers may also have to use a lot of their free time to help out at home.The Carers Trust surveyed 423 young and adult carers, and found that almost three-quarters (72%) said they miss out on the holidays because they provide care.Many also felt they weren't able to do a lot of the things most other children get to do, with nearly half saying they miss out on friendships and hobbies.One young carer in the study said: "I feel bad for taking breaks and when I have time for myself I'm always thinking that I could be doing something else to help out."
What support is there for young carers?
Charities like the Carers Trust and The Children's Society provide support and help for young people who are carers.Young carers in the UK also have a right to be given the information they need and have an assessment of their own needs.This is called a young carer assessment, or a young carer statement in Scotland. This can help decide what kind of help a young person and their family needs. Local authorities - also known as councils - are responsible for young carer assessments in lots of cases. Local authorities they are in charge of lots of things in our local areas, including things like schools, traffic and bin collections. But teachers can and schools can also provide support.

But the bosses of the respective charities have accused SNP ministers of 'inaction and broken promises', with the Government accused of failing to spend £4.5 million in funding allocated in the Scottish Budget in December last year. Opposition parties said those who had shared 'painful' experiences of suffering from long Covid had been 'shamefully ignored and sidelined' by the Government. Jane Ormerod, chair of Long Covid Scotland, said: 'In December 2024, the Scottish Government announced a £4.5m non-recurring fund. Yet by July 2025, not a penny has been allocated. 'What was framed as a hopeful investment now stands as a symbol of inaction and broken promises.' Helen Goss, chief operating officer and Scottish lead at Long Covid Kids, added: 'We entered 2025 with cautious optimism. Instead, six months on, we are forced to resign from a system that continues to fail the very people it was created to support.' A statement issued on behalf of both charities said: 'The Scottish Government remains functionally absent from the network, offering no leadership, no oversight, and no enforcement of its own policies. 'Workstreams have stalled, strategic oversight commitments [are] unmet. Internal discussions now reference 'wind down' and 'rollback', rather than delivery. Some services have now closed, despite funding and a mandate to operate until March 2026.' Jackie Baillie, Dr Sandesh Gulhane and Alex Cole-Hamilton, co-conveners of the Scottish Parliament's long Covid cross-party group, said in a joint statement: 'It is a damning indictment of the SNP's lack of leadership that Long Covid Scotland and Long Covid Kids have had to resign from the Strategic Long Covid Network because of the Scottish Government's failures. 'Those who have shared their painful and personal experiences of long Covid in good faith have been shamefully ignored and sidelined, leaving people feeling unseen and unheard. The Scottish Government has lost the confidence of the long Covid and ME community. Bedfordshire woman with ME criticises health plan for condition
A woman living with myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) said she has "lost faith" in receiving "meaningful support" after the government released a new support plan for the also known as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), is a neurological disease which affects about 390,000 people in the UK. On 22 July the government launched a new delivery plan to improve education around the illness, as well as increase funding, research and medical training for health practitioners. Maddie Walker, 51, from Bedfordshire, said she was "disappointed" in how the plan lacked any "real change to improve the quality of life for sufferers". Ms Walker said she was healthy and active before she developed severe ME and was now unable to leave the house without a wheelchair and has carers visit her multiple times a described living with the condition as "mind-numbing" and that she felt "despondent". The condition's symptoms include fatigue, muscle and joint weakness, cognitive dysfunction and post-exertional malaise. Misdiagnosis Ms Walker was initially diagnosed with fibromyalgia with fatigue, a condition causing muscular pain all over the body. As a result of the crossover in symptoms, Ms Walker's ME was not recognised initially, leading her to be recommended treatment that was not tailored to both conditions."Something I feel really strongly about is people being given the right information at the point of diagnosis because if I had known what I was doing was harmful, I might not be in this situation."Ms Walker said she has a "terrible, really poor quality of life" and that "hundreds of thousands of people have once again been let down" by the new delivery plan. "We just aren't important enough," she said. The ME Association (MEA) said the government must go "much further" to improve medical care and funding for "much needed" biomedical research. It added that currently most research studies for ME/CFS are funded by the charity added there were numerous strengths to the plan, including the approach to broaden education about the illness in the NHS and in schools. Dr Charles Shepherd, a medical adviser with the MEA, said the plan does not align with the 2021 National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines, which suggested making referral services more accessible in hospitals. Ashley Dalton, the MP for West Lancashire and minister for public health and prevention, said: "[The] plan will help tackle the stigma and lack of awareness of this condition through improved training for NHS staff." A spokesperson of Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) said: "We acknowledge there is more to be done and will continue to build on the foundations of these actions well beyond the publication of this plan."There was a "clear commitment" to achieving "meaningful change" for the ME/CFS community, it using neighbourhood health services, the DHSC said it will ensure patients can access quality care closer to home.
