Sodhi Kanna, who served as a deputy commander in a Maoist organisation, was killed in a joint operation by security forces launched on July 4.
The deputy commander of a Maoist group, who carried a reward of Rs 8 lakh, was killed in a joint operation launched by security forces on July 4 in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, dealing a major blow to the Maoist organisation's capabilities.
The man was identified as Sodhi Kanna, who served as the deputy commander of Company No. 02 of the People's Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) Battalion No. 01. He was involved in several major Maoist operations in the Tekalgudium area in Telangana, including an attack on the Dharmaram camp, according to an official statement. The PLGA is linked to the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist).
After Bijapur's Superintendent of Police, Jitendra Yadav, received credible intelligence of Maoist activity in the National Park of the district, a coordinated search operation by security forces involving DRG Bijapur, CoBRA 210 and the CRPF Young Platoon was launched on July 4, according to the statement.
As per the intelligence, members of the Telangana State Committee, National Park Area Committee, PLGA Battalion No. 01, and other armed Maoist cadres were active in the region. Intermittent encounters between the Maoist forces and the security personnel began after the operation was launched.
Following the operation, a search of the area led to the recovery of the body of an armed Maoist in uniform, a .303 rifle, an AK-47 magazine, a large cache of explosive materials, and other Naxal-related items, including backpacks and Maoist literature, from the encounter site.
P Sundarraj, Bastar Inspector General (IG) of Police informed that the bodies of more than 415 Maoists have been recovered over the past 18 months. 'This figure clearly reflects the effective planning, courageous actions, and strong public support behind the efforts of the security forces," he said in a statement.
'It is particularly noteworthy that even during this challenging monsoon season, marked by heavy rainfall and difficult terrain, there has been no let-up in the alertness, commitment, and operational momentum of the security forces. Despite slippery jungle paths, hilly terrains, and constantly changing weather, forces including the DRG, STF, CoBRA, CRPF, BSF, ITBP, CAF, and Bastar Fighters are carrying out their missions with unwavering determination," he added.
The banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) has been severely weakened after a string of major setbacks, as the strength of its top leadership bodies has been significantly depleted due to the government's pledge to eradicate Naxalism by 2026.

Bag of marijuana worth Rs 63,000 recovered from Puri-Ahmedabad train

Written by Jay Jani A bag containing around 6 kg of marijuana was recovered from the Puri-Ahmedabad Superfast Express at the Kalupur Railway Station on Saturday, prompting the Railway Protection Force (RPF) to register a narcotics case against an unidentified individual. According to officials, Raman Kumar Yadav, an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) with the RPF, was on duty as the sector in-charge for platforms 4 to 7 when the train arrived at platform number 6. Railway staff alerted the ASI about an unattended 'college-style bag' lying beneath three seats in a coach. A State Reserve Police (SRP) team reached the spot and conducted a check. A total of 6.3 kg of the drug, valued at approximately Rs 63,000, was found in the bag. To confirm the nature of the substance, the railway police sought assistance from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), a team from which came to conduct an on-spot analysis that confirmed the substance. Following the seizure, a case was registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at the Kalupur Railway police station. Further investigation is underway. Haridwar Police Seize Drugs Worth Rs 3 Crore Ahead Of Kanwar Yatra

Haridwar: Haridwar Police arrested a youth with a large consignment of illegal drugs worth around Rs 3 crore, days before the Kanwar Yatra begins. Acting on Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami's directive to make Uttarakhand a drug-free state, the police seized 1.042 kg of pure smack and 457 grams of adulterated smack brought in with the intent to profit from the religious gathering, an official statement said. According to Haridwar SSP Pramendra Singh Dobal, the accused, identified as Mursaleen, was apprehended during a routine inspection at the Pathri Power House within the limits of Bahadrabad police station. SSP Dobal said that police had been receiving intelligence inputs suggesting that smack was being transported from Rajasthan to Haridwar and other neighbouring states. The accused allegedly intended to sell the narcotics during the upcoming Kanwar Yatra, capitalising on the large crowds. Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further investigation is underway. Apart from this, the Health Department has prepared a strict and dedicated action plan to provide pure and safe food to lakhs of devotees during the upcoming Kanwar Yatra, a statement said. Special teams of food safety officers have been deployed in Haridwar, Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri and Uttarkashi districts. These teams will regularly collect samples of milk, sweets, oil, spices, beverages, and other items from the pandals and send them to laboratories for testing. If any sample does not meet the standards, the concerned place will be closed immediately, the statement said. Additional Commissioner of Food Safety and Drug Administration, Tajbar Singh Jaggi, stated that the government has made it clear that no leniency will be shown to those conducting food business without a license. Those who adulterate or violate the rules will face both financial penalties and potential criminal action. This year, the Kanwar Yatra procession will begin on July 12, during which Kanwariyas will collect water from a river and carry it hundreds of kilometres to offer it to the shrines of Lord Shiva. According to Hindu beliefs, Parshuram, a devotee of Shiva and an avatar of Lord Vishnu, participated in the initial procession. Devotees across the country perform worship, fasting and pilgrimage dedicated to the Lord Shiva. Actor Mahesh Babu Gets Legal Notice In Rs 34 Lakh Real Estate Fraud Case

Tollywood actor Mahesh Babu has reportedly received legal notices from the Ranga Reddy District Consumer Commission in Telangana regarding his endorsement of Sai Surya Developers, a real estate firm facing allegations of fraud. A Hyderabad-based doctor filed a complaint, claiming she was defrauded of Rs 34.8 lakh after purchasing plots that allegedly did not exist. Mahesh Babu has been named as the third respondent in the case, with the complaint asserting that his public endorsement significantly influenced potential buyers. This is not the first time Mahesh Babu's name has been linked to the company. In April 2025, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) questioned the actor in connection with a money laundering probe involving Sai Surya Developers and the Surana Group. The company's owner, Kancharla Satish Chandra Gupta, is under police investigation for defaulting on a major real estate project called "Green Meadows." While the Enfrocement Directorate's earlier investigation indicated that Mahesh Babu was not being treated as an accused and may have endorsed the project in good faith, the current consumer commission notice brings renewed scrutiny to his role as a brand ambassador. The actor and his team are yet to respond to the latest reports of a fresh notice issued.
