Elon Musk says Grok's latest feature is the new Vine
"Grok Imagine is AI Vine!" Musk wrote in an X post on Saturday, touting the latest feature from his chatbot, Grok.
Grok Imagine — now in beta — allows users to type out images or scenes they'd like to see the AI bot animate into video. It then generates clips with sound to the user's specifications.
Before TikTok — and long before Grok — there was Vine. The beloved short-form video service, which allowed users to create and upload 6-second videos, was owned by then-Twitter shortly after its 2012 founding until its shuttering in 2017. It was the source of many early viral videos and the subject of numerous compilations of "the best Vines of all time."
While Grok Imagine offers a new AI spin on short-form clips, Musk also appears to be eyeing a comeback for Vine itself.
"Btw, we recently found the Vine video archive (thought it had been deleted) and are working on restoring user access, so you can post them if you want," Musk added in his Saturday post.
It's unclear whether restoring the Vine archive would allow users to access their old accounts or if it would be a temporary measure allowing access to old files from the service.
Musk and representatives for X did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider.
For now, access to Grok Imagine is being slowly rolled out to subscribers of the chatbot's $30-monthly premium tier, SuperGrok, though any user of X can sign up to be added to the waitlist.

"I think I look way better and I'm way happier," she told People. "Nobody ages perfectly, so I plan to keep using surgery to make me as perfect as I can be." Later, in 2018, she revealed she actually died for a minute as a result of the surgeries, scaring her husband, Spencer Pratt. "Spencer thought he lost me," she said. "My security guards called Spencer and told him, 'Heidi's heart stopped. She's not going to make it.' And I easily could've. Cutting yourself up isn't something I'd recommend." She has continued to express regret in later years, revealing she had long-term health complications and saying, "I was way too young to make such a life-changing decision." However, a couple of years later, he had sex with her again "just to show her the first performance was a fluke and I'd gotten better.' Zayn Malik admitted he wasn't sure if he'd ever been in love, despite having been engaged and sharing a child with Gigi Hadid after a long-term relationship. "When you ask me, 'What is love?' I think the reason that's hard for me to answer that question is I don't know if I've ever actually truly been in love," he said, waxing poetic about what love is. While he loves his child, he said, he wasn't sure he'd been "in love with somebody who is a complete separate entity. They're not my family. I have no blood with them, like, 'I'm in love with this person.' I don't know." "You can never really pinpoint, I think, what is love. There's ways you can show love. You can express it. That's our human understanding of it, but what is love? It's an intangible thing, right? We can't hold it in our hands. It's not something that exists," he said. Looking back at times he thought he'd been in love, he said, "Your perspective changes it, right? You look back on it with new eyes, and you're like, 'Well, maybe I wasn't in love there.' But that's time. So, is it love? Or is it life experience that we are going through? Who knows?" Dax Shepherd similarly admitted in 2019 that he wasn't sure he wanted to be with Kristen Bell when they were first dating. "I never ever was like, 'Oh, I hope I can keep Kristen.' I was going, 'Do I want to be with a Christian, who has eight people living in her house for free, who has to get out of a car when there's a dog who doesn't have a leash and ruin her whole day to rescue this dog? That's great, and she's good, but that's not what I want to do," he said he thought. "I'm not that good. I don't want to spend my day finding the owner of a dog. So I wasn't fearful I would lose her. I wasn't certain I wanted to be with someone like that." Bell also admitted that the two actually broke up a few months into dating and that Shepherd was seeing other people. "He sat me down and said, 'I can't have this right now. I think you're wonderful, but I am still dating other people.' And then I, like, liquefied and fell to the ground, but I felt incredibly respected that he had the balls to tell me we weren't in the same place." However, Shepherd changed his mind, calling Bell to tell her, "I don't know what I was thinking. I was dating someone else, but they're just not as interesting as you, and I don't know what I'm doing." Bethenny Frankel admitted that she had never liked sex with her ex-husband Jason Hoppy, saying on her podcast that she used to have to "force" herself to have sex with him. "He used to say to me, 'You're like a block of ice,' because I did not want to be intimate. I did not want to have sex," she said. "I used to force myself, gag myself through doing it…it is torture." Big tech has spent $155bn on AI this year. It's about to spend hundreds of billions more
The US's largest companies have spent 2025 locked in a competition to spend more money than one another, lavishing $155bn on the development of artificial intelligence, more than the US government has spent on education, training, employment and social services in the 2025 fiscal year so far. Based on the most recent financial disclosures of Silicon Valley's biggest players, the race is about to accelerate to hundreds of billions in a single year. Over the past two weeks, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, and Alphabet, Google's parent, have shared their quarterly public financial reports. Each disclosed that their year-to-date capital expenditure, a figure that refers to the money companies spend to acquire or upgrade tangible assets, already totals tens of billions. Capex, as the term is abbreviated, is a proxy for technology companies' spending on AI because the technology requires gargantuan investments in physical infrastructure, namely data centers, which require large amounts of power, water and expensive semiconductor chips. Google said during its most recent earnings call that its capital expenditure 'primarily reflects investments in servers and data centers to support AI'. Meta's year-to-date capital expenditure amounted to $30.7bn, doubling the $15.2bn figure from the same time last year, per its earnings report. For the most recent quarter alone, the company spent $17bn on capital expenditures, also double the same period in 2024, $8.5bn. Alphabet reported nearly $40bn in capex to date for the first two quarters of the current fiscal year, and Amazon reported $55.7bn. Microsoft said it would spend more than $30bn in the current quarter to build out the data centers powering its AI services. Microsoft CFO Amy Hood said the current quarter's capex would be at least 50% more than the outlay during the same period a year earlier and greater than the company's record capital expenditures of $24.2bn in the quarter to June. 'We will continue to invest against the expansive opportunity ahead,' Hood said. For the coming fiscal year, big tech's total capital expenditure is slated to balloon enormously, surpassing the already eye-popping sums of the previous year. Microsoft plans to unload about $100bn on AI in the next fiscal year, CEO Satya Nadella said Wednesday. Meta plans to spend between $66bn and $72bn. Alphabet plans to spend $85bn, significantly higher than its previous estimation of $75bn. Amazon estimated that its 2025 expenditure would come to $100bn as it plows money into Amazon Web Services, which analysts now expect to amount to $118bn. In total, the four tech companies will spend more than $400bn on capex in the coming year, according to the Wall Street Journal. The multibillion-dollar figures represent mammoth investments, which the Journal points out is larger than the European Union's quarterly spending on defense. However, the tech giants can't seem to spend enough for their investors. Microsoft, Google and Meta informed Wall Street analysts last quarter that their total capex would be higher than previously estimated. In the case of all three companies, investors were thrilled, and shares in each company soared after their respective earnings calls. Microsoft's market capitalization hit $4tn the day after its report. Even Apple, the cagiest of the tech giants, signaled that it would boost its spending on AI in the coming year by a major amount, either via internal investments or acquisitions. The company's quarterly capex rose to $3.46bn, up from $2.15bn during the same period last year. The iPhone maker reported blockbuster earnings Thursday, with rebounding iPhone sales and better-than-expected business in China, but it is still seen as lagging farthest behind on development and deployment of AI products among the tech giants. Tim Cook, Apple's CEO, said Thursday that the company was reallocating a 'fair number' of employees to focus on artificial intelligence and that the 'heart of our AI strategy' is to increase investments and 'embed' AI across all of its devices and platforms. Cook refrained from disclosing exactly how much Apple is spending, however. 'We are significantly growing our investment, I'm not putting specific numbers behind that,' he said. Smaller players are trying to keep up with the incumbents' massive spending and capitalize on the gold rush. OpenAI announced at the end of the week of earnings that it had raised $8.3bn in investment, part of a planned $40bn round of funding, valuing the startup, whose ChatGPT chatbot kicked in 2022, at $300bn.
