5 Supporters Of Raj Thackeray's MNS Detained Over Attack On Investor's Office

NDTV20 hours ago
Mumbai:
Five Maharashtra Navnirman Sena supporters were detained on Saturday for the attack on investor Sushil Kedia's office in Worli here over the latter's social media post about not learning Marathi and his "kya karna hai bol" dare to Raj Thackeray.
Hours after the attack, Kedia apologised for the social post claiming he had overreacted and also professed admiration for Thackeray.
Kedia said he had uploaded the post in a wrong state of mind under duress and stress and wished to correct it unequivocally after realising his mistake.
"Having come under pressure mentally from the violence inflicted on those who do not know Marathi, I ended up over-reacting," Kedia said. "I realise I must take back my over-reactions and withdraw," he asserted.
In his apology video, Kedia said, "Even after living for 30 years in Mumbai, the level of proficiency and fluency that a native Marathi born can have, we will not be able to achieve and for avoiding any embarrassments or confusions, one has been using Marathi language only in less than formal situations, with a casual atmosphere only before people very closely known to them." "It has not happened to me in the use of seven other Indian languages that I could learn over a period of time," Kedia added.
Kedia said he has a deep sense of appreciation and gratitude towards Raj Thackeray for the strong issues he raises, the strength with which stands up in matters like the Hanuman Chalisa campaign (when Uddhav Thackeray was the chief minister), championing the cause of Hindutva and "rashtrawad" (nationalism).
Sushil Kedia came into the crosshairs of the Raj Thackeray-led party on Friday.
After some incidents of people getting thrashed over non-use of Marathi triggered by the controversy linked to the "imposition" of Hindi and three-language policy in state schools, Kedia had expressed his anger through a social media post targeting Thackeray.
"I don't know Marathi properly even after living for 30 years in Mumbai & with your gross misconduct I have made it a resolve that until such people as you are allowed to pretend to be taking care of Marathi Manus I take pratigya I won't learn Marathi. Kya karna hai bol?" Kedia had posted on X.
In response, MNS supporters, shouting slogans in support of Thackeray and Marathi, had thrown coconuts at the glass door entrance of Kedia's office this morning, with videos of the attack going viral on social media immediately.
In the videos, security personnel posted at the site can be seen trying to thwart the attack in vain, while office staff attempted to down shutters to avoid getting hit by the coconuts.
Five MNS supporters have been detained in connection with the attack and further probe into the incident is underway, a Worli police station official said.
"They have been brought to the police station for questioning and further legal action," the official said.
Incidentally, police had provided security to Kedia's office situated at Century Bazar after his post began generating a backlash from MNS supporters.

EC eases rules on Bihar voter list revision; can give papers later, says CEO

Amid concerns about the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, which requires voters to produce documents that few own or know how to procure, the office of the state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) has asked people to submit filled-out electoral forms without the requisite documents if they do not possess them. Booth-level officers (BLOs) have been asked to upload all the filled-out, signed forms, while the documents can be submitted later. In an advertisement carried in newspapers in Hindi, the office of the Bihar CEO says: 'Fill and submit your enumeration forms with documents and your photograph to BLOs as early as possible. If you do not have requisite documents, send the filled-out, signed forms to the BLOs.' While the Election Commission (EC) has not issued any fresh order, the Bihar CEO's move is being taken as an attempt to allay panic among people, given that the deadline for the final form submission is just two weeks away (July 26). In instructions to District Magistrates (DMs), the office of the CEO says, 'All DMs, collect forms without documents; also ensure maximum forms are collected so that we can ensure maximum number of voters on draft publication …. Documents can be collected afterwards …. and uploaded through BLO dashboard (being developed ) …. Documents can be collected later and uploaded afterwards…. Jo bhi forms baante hai bas enumeration forms filled upload kariye abhi with signature (for now, just upload the filled-out enumeration forms with signature) …. BLOs already know 90% of their voters, Apart from those who have passed away and permanent migration, upload all forms.' A BLO in a village in Banka district confirmed that these instructions had been issued. 'Yes, we are told to accept both kinds of forms, with or without documents. There is panic not just among people but among us. I have over 1,300 enumeration forms to submit with a few sacks of documents that need to be scanned. It does not look possible to complete it by July 26. We are praying for an extension of deadline.' He said the exercise was similar to the house-to-house survey conducted three years ago, in which they had been asked to avoid duplicating names and ensure that those who had passed away were not included in the electoral rolls.

Industry ready if US trade deal doesn't materialise: CII President

Indian industry is prepared for any outcome regarding the proposed bilateral trade agreement with the United States, according to Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) President Rajiv Memani, who emphasised that the country's business sector will not pursue deals that compromise national interests. In an interview with ANI, Mempraised the government's extensive consultation process with industry stakeholders before positioning India in trade negotiations. "The Indian government has given considerable time to understand industry concerns, issues and opportunities. Every industry, every size of industry has been consulted to understand how India should be positioned," he said. The CII President emphasized that there is no compulsion to conclude a deal at any cost. "There is no doubt that India will only do this deal when it is in India's interest and America's interest. Until it is not in the interest of both countries, this deal will not happen. There is no compulsion in this regard," Memani stated. Live Events Expressing readiness for either possibilty, Memani outlined the conditions under which industry would support the Free Trade Agreement (FTA). "If you ask industry whether they want this FTA on favourable terms and if we get relatively better terms compared to other countries, then industry desires this FTA," he explained. The potential benefits are significant, particularly regarding tariff reduction. "The 26 per cent tariff that has been imposed will come down and industry will get opportunities to operate there. We will remain more competitive compared to other countries," Memani noted. The CII President also highlighted the broader strategic messaging that an FTA would send: "When two countries have an FTA, it also sends a message that both countries are ready to work together." Memani acknowledged that certain sectors would face difficulties if the trade deal (with US) doesn't materialize, but emphasized industry's commitment to national interests. "It is certain that some sectors and some industries will face difficulties, but industries do not want to work in a way that harms the country. Industry wants to do this in a way that benefits the country," he said. The CII President specifically identified potential competitive challenges, particularly in the automotive sector. "If you look at auto companies, Mexico has a trade deal where tariff is almost 0 per cent. If there's a 25 per cent gap, then Mexico becomes most competitive," he explained. Memani predicted that Mexico would be the primary beneficiary if India fails to secure favorable terms, with some potential gains for Vietnam as well. "The maximum alternative replacement will come from Mexico, with some possibility from Vietnam," he said. The textiles and garments industry could face particular challenges due to Vietnam's existing advantages. "The garments industry could become slightly less competitive because Vietnam has a 20 per cent tariff," Memani observed, highlighting how existing trade relationships could impact Indian competitiveness. Memani cautioned against expecting immediate benefits even if a deal is concluded, describing trade agreements as "a long game." He emphasised that both countries would need to make adjustments to maximize benefits. "Many American companies may also invest in India to export from India. Indian companies will also have to focus on their competitiveness," he noted, suggesting that the government might need to implement reforms and support measures to help industries become more competitive. The CII President's comments reflect a mature approach to international trade negotiations, where industry supports government efforts to secure favorable terms while remaining prepared for alternative scenarios. "Trade deals are two-way. Some things will be good, while some sectors may face challenges," Memani said acknowledging the complex nature of international trade agreements and their varied impacts across different sectors of the economy.
