Can diversifying into alternative investments help investors navigate market volatility? LGT Wealth's Viswanath explains

Mint4 days ago
As the name suggests, alternative investments do not belong to conventional investment categories such as stocks or bonds but rather represent a diverse range of financial assets as private equity, private credit, hedge funds, real estate, venture capital, commodities and collectibles.
These have grown in popularity in recent years, especially as investors seek to diversify their portfolios by allocating a portion of a portfolio to alternative investments and enhance the long-term investment approach. Not only do alternative investments have the potential to diversify a portfolio of traditional assets but often deliver performance that is not correlated to traditional markets, helping investors navigate volatility.
According to the recent industry reports, the alternative assets market in India currently estimated at $400 billion AUM is projected to grow 5x to $2 trillion over the next decade.
Globally the alternative investments have reached an estimated $25 trillion AUM and continues to expand as the investors base and their allocations to private markets increase. Even though India today stands as the world's fourth-largest economy, alternative investments remain underpenetrated at just 4% of GDP, compared to over 10% of GDP in mature markets like the US and Europe with investors allocating as high as 20% of their portfolio to alternatives.
This gap presents as a significant growth opportunity in India, especially as family offices, high-net-worth individuals (HNIs) and ultra-HNIs increasingly seek non-traditional, higher-yield assets.
Indian investors are participating in alternative investments through allocation to AIFs (Alternative Investment Funds), REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts), InvITs (Infrastructure Investment Trusts), offshore opportunities through GIFT City-based funds and international platforms.
Each asset category has unique characteristics in terms of expected return, risk, yield, liquidity, and capital requirements that require a closer look to better understand the different benefits that it can bring to a portfolio. While some of the asset categories may serve more of a growth and capital appreciation purpose, others may protect portfolios against inflation and/or provide stable income. Some strategies may offer a combination.
Historically, alternative investments have offered return premiums to investors willing to accept greater illiquidity and have been shown to meaningfully outperform public markets over time. While access to AIFs has been driven by a mix of macroeconomic, regulatory, and technological forces, yet alternative investments can present their own challenges, requiring an in-depth understanding of the space to evaluate and choose the alternatives suitable to risk profile of the investor. Our team harnesses its global knowledge and experience to carefully curate a set of high-conviction investment strategies in the alternatives space, designed to help investors in appropriate capital allocation.
Investors who are beginning their journey in alternatives space can start with shorter tenure (average life of 5 to 7 years) private equity funds which invest in stable businesses with predictable exit scenarios and private credit funds which generates cash yield. This allocation can be enhanced to long tenure equity funds of 8 to 10 years, investing in stellar fund managers with a track record in the fund's investment strategy. There are many nuances in the selection of the fund manager including but not limited to characteristics like having skin in the game, ability to leverage their experience to back transformational companies poised for growth, navigate the market dynamics supporting the portfolio companies and generate the alpha over the investment horizon.
Despite the steady growth in alternatives, one of the setbacks in the past few years has been slowdown in liquidity avenues for AIF investors on account of delayed exit options of the underlying portfolio entities of these AIFs. This is expected to improve in the following years as many of these entities will use vibrant capital markets and possible secondaries with wider participation and offer opportunities for investor exits.
Investors who thoughtfully allocate to alternatives - balancing risk, liquidity, and long-term vision, could benefit significantly in the next decade.

Timed perfectly to coincide with the ongoing monsoon season, this month-long program is aimed at offering preventive maintenance and ensuring a safe and hassle-free driving experience for Toyota owners during the rainy season. The initiative promises timely diagnostics and special benefits tailored to enhance vehicle reliability and passenger safety. As part of the campaign, Toyota is offering a complimentary 20-point vehicle check-up, which will include essential inspections such as battery health and tyre condition—two crucial factors that directly impact safety during wet weather. 'India Negotiates Based On National Interest, Not Deadlines': Piyush Goyal On India-US Trade Talks

Last Updated: 'This is not a weak India under Congress and UPA which would negotiate and make agreements which are not in national interest,' says Piyush Goyal on US-India trade pact. India-US Trade Talks: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has said India does not negotiate trade deals based on deadlines, but rather conducts discussions keeping in mind national interests. He added that this is not a weak India under the Congress and the UPA which would negotiate and make agreements which are not in national interest. 'India does not negotiate under deadlines, we negotiate keeping national interest in mind. National interest is paramount in all our work across the world. This is not a weak India under Congress and UPA which would negotiate and make agreements which are not in national interest," said Goyal on the US-India trade pact while addressing reporters. — Press Trust of India (@PTI_News) July 5, 2025 The comments come amid reports that India and the US are close to finalising an interim trade agreement ahead of a key deadline — July 9, which marks the end of the 90-day suspension of reciprocal tariffs announced by former US President Donald Trump. Under that move, the US had imposed an additional 26% import duty on several Indian goods, which remains suspended temporarily. According to a report by news agency PTI, citing an official, there is still a possibility that the deal could be announced before the July 9 deadline. An Indian delegation, led by Rajesh Agrawal, special secretary in the Department of Commerce, returned from Washington earlier this week after several days of negotiations between June 26 and July 2. The two countries are looking to finalise the first tranche of the proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA) by September–October this year. The full pact is part of a broader plan to boost bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030, up from the current $191 billion. What India and the US Want The US is seeking duty cuts on a range of industrial goods, including automobiles (especially electric vehicles), wines, and petrochemicals. In the agriculture sector, the US is seeking duty concessions on products like dairy items, apples, tree nuts, and genetically modified crops. On the other hand, India is pushing for better market access for labour-intensive sectors, such as textiles, gems and jewellery, leather, garments, plastics, chemicals, shrimp, oilseeds, grapes, and bananas. Both sides have indicated that negotiations are progressing, but consensus on core issues will be required before any formal pact can be signed. Agriculture a Sticky Point One of the most sensitive issues in the talks is the US demand for duty concessions on agricultural products, including dairy, apples, tree nuts, and genetically modified crops. India has held firm on its position that trade pacts must be mutually beneficial. India has so far not opened up its dairy sector in any of its free trade agreements. Auto Sector Concerns and WTO Dispute India has also raised objections to high US tariffs on steel, aluminium, and automobiles. Specifically, Washington has imposed a 25% duty on passenger vehicles and parts from India, which came into effect on May 3, 2025, and remains open-ended. India has filed a formal communication at the World Trade Organization (WTO), asserting its right to impose retaliatory tariffs in response. India's share in the US auto parts import market remains small, with just $2.2 billion in exports compared to Mexico's $36 billion and China's $10.1 billion. Bilateral Trade on the Rise Despite ongoing tariff tensions, trade between India and the US continues to grow. During the first two months of the current fiscal year, India's merchandise exports to the US rose 21.78% to $17.25 billion, while imports climbed 25.8% to $8.87 billion, official data shows. Meanwhile, the US has stated that it is preparing to issue notices to countries with which it has not concluded any trade agreement, warning of possible unilateral tariff hikes. Apart from the US, India is also negotiating free trade agreements (FTAs) with different countries, including the European Union, New Zealand, Oman, the US, Chile, and Peru. FTAs are possible only when both sides get benefitted and it should be a win-win agreement, Goyal has said. Nirav Modi's brother Nehal Modi held in U.S. on extradition request from India

The U.S. authorities have arrested the younger brother of fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi on the basis of the extradition requests from the Enforcement Directorate and the CBI, officials said on Saturday (July 5, 2025). Nehal Modi was taken into custody on Friday (July 4, 2025), U.S. authorities have informed India, they said. The next date for the hearing in the matter is July 17, when Nihal may seek bail, but it will be opposed by the U.S. prosecutors, they said. The move came on an extradition request jointly submitted by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The extradition proceedings led by the US prosecutors were taken up on two charges — one count of money laundering under Section 3 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, and one count of criminal conspiracy under Sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 201 (disappearance) of the Indian Penal Code. Nehal, 46, is an accused in an alleged ₹13,000 crore fraud — one of the largest such — involving the Punjab National Bank. It has been alleged that the fraud was orchestrated by the two brothers and their uncle Mehul Choksi. Born and brought up in Antwerp, Belgium, and fluent in English, Gujarati, and Hindi, Nehal Deepak Modi is wanted in India for laundering proceeds of crime on behalf of his brother, Nirav Modi, who is lodged in a London prison facing extradition proceedings from the U.K. on an Indian request. Nehal is alleged to have assisted in concealing and transferring large sums of illicit funds through a web of shell companies and overseas transactions, in violation of Indian laws, officials said. Nehal has been named in the charge sheet filed by the ED in this case and has been charged with destruction of evidence and "knowingly and intentionally" assisting Nirav Modi in his alleged illegal acts, they said. The ED alleged that after the PNB fraud came to light, Nehal, along with Nirav's close confidante and executive Mihir R Bhansali, "took 50 kg gold and substantial cash from Dubai, and directed dummy directors not to reveal his name before the authorities," they said.
