National Digital Department launches RAI Portal to streamline services for non-citizens
The RAI Portal is developed as a digital one-stop centre, aligning information and services with the specific purposes of its users.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the portal symbolised the country's commitment to positioning digitalisation as a catalyst for inclusive development.
'As a digital one-stop centre, the portal was developed for non-citizens intending to deal with the Malaysian government, whether for travel, education or investment purposes,' he said during the launch of the portal here today.
The portal, accessible via www.rai.gov.my, compiles information from various government agencies, including those related to immigration, transport and health.
Therefore, Gobind expressed hope that all relevant agencies would continue to enhance the portal's content and strengthen cooperation based on feedback received from users.
Information and services on the portal are organised into six main clusters, namely: Enter (entry information to Malaysia), Visit (tourist guides and visas), Study (educational opportunities), Work (employment and permit information), Live (daily services and life in Malaysia), and Invest (investment opportunities and government incentives).
Meanwhile, JDN director-general Nik Zalbiha Nik Mat said the portal's launch reflected the government's continued commitment to mainstreaming digitalisation in the public sector, in line with the Malaysia Digital Economy Blueprint (RTEDM) and the Fourth Industrial Revolution Policy (D4IRN).
'Under the RTEDM, one of the key thrusts is to establish a digital government that prioritises efficiency, reliability and inclusiveness. This portal represents a tangible step towards ensuring the government is not only responsive to public needs but also proactive in driving innovation and promoting data openness,' she said.
Nik Zalbiha said D4IRN, on the other hand, emphasised the adoption of disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data analytics and the Internet of Things (IoT).
She added that the portal has been developed in line with IR4.0 principles, including system integration across agencies, smart technology adoption and a customer-centric design.
Nik Zalbiha said the portal would also serve as a key platform to promote Malaysia on the global stage and strengthen the country's position as a preferred destination for international tourists, investors and talent. — Bernama

Sarawak deputy premier: No truth to alleged power struggle within PBB
MIRI, July 20 — Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan has dismissed a recent article alleging an internal power struggle within Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), describing it as 'baseless and lacking credibility.' 'The thought of engaging in political deceit, let alone a power struggle, has never crossed my mind. The article by FMT (Free Malaysia Today) carried no credibility whatsoever; it didn't even state its sources. It's nothing more than rubbish,' he told reporters after chairing a PBB Bukit Sari branch committee meeting at a hotel in Lawas last night. According to Awang Tengah, such unfounded claims have, to some extent, sparked suspicion among certain quarters, painting him as someone 'power-crazy'. Awang Tengah, who is PBB deputy president, said he was taught the values of loyalty and unity by former Chief Minister and Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sarawak, the late Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud. 'He always reminded us that the strength and interest of the party must come above all else,' he added. He said similar advice had also come from former Chief Minister the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem, fondly known as Tok Nan, and the current Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, both of whom he regards as mentors. 'I hold firmly to these principles. I believe in what was instilled in me, which are the spirit of teamwork, loyalty to leadership and prioritising the party over any form of factionalism,' he stressed. Awang Tengah reiterated that during PBB's most recent convention, he once again declared his full support for the leadership of Abang Johari, and that his stand has never wavered. 'I am not one to pretend. My support for Premier Abang Johari's leadership is undivided,' he added. He believed that the article in question was clearly an attempt to sow discord within the party leadership. 'However, such a culture does not exist within PBB,' he said. The article published by FMT alleged that a 'quiet leadership contest' is brewing in Sarawak, claiming that factions aligned with Abang Johari and his deputy Awang Tengah are beginning to position themselves ahead of what could become a battle to shape the state's future direction. According to the portal, an anonymous source suggested that the issue of succession could lead to heightened political manoeuvring in the coming months, particularly with the next state election scheduled for 2026. — The Borneo Post

SINGAPORE, July 30 — Struggling with high rents and labour shortages, Singaporean restaurateurs are turning to Johor Bahru for relief, drawn by lower costs and the hope of reviving their businesses. Hyderabadi chef Govinda Rajan, who opened his first Malaysian branch of Mr Biryani just three months ago, is already eyeing expansion, calling it a much-needed lifeline as his Singapore outlets battle to survive, the South China Morning Post reported. Across the city state, food and beverage (F&B) businesses are closing at the fastest rate in nearly 20 years, with 3,047 establishments shutting down in 2024 alone. This year has already seen 1,404 closures in the first half, including long-time favourites like Crystal Jade's Holland Village branch and Michelin-starred Poise. Govinda and others say while ingredients in Malaysia may be pricier, the overall costs — from rent to wages — are far more manageable, helping restore profitability. Singapore's tight foreign worker policies and locals' aversion to service jobs have further strained the sector, leaving many businesses short-staffed and financially squeezed. Temasek Polytechnic's Geoffrey Tai said more operators are expanding regionally to escape Singapore's high overheads and tap into growing middle-class markets like Malaysia. Lower operating costs have helped restaurateurs like Keith Koh, who opened a Muslim-friendly outlet of Lad & Dad in Kuala Lumpur in May, rediscover their passion and reduce burnout. Still, Singapore saw 3,790 new F&B openings last year and nearly 2,000 more in the first half of 2025, though industry insiders warn many are underestimating the risks. Chef-owner Bjorn Shen, who has expanded to Penang and Bali, said profits of 20–30 per cent are achievable abroad, compared to 5–7 per cent at best in Singapore, where most new restaurants fail within two years.
