Sunderland roar back into the Premier League big-time

West Australian24-05-2025
Teenage substitute Tom Watson has scored a stoppage-time winner as Sunderland rallied to beat Sheffield United 2-1 in the Championship play-off final and earn promotion back to the Premier League.
The 19-year-old Watson struck from the edge of the penalty area five minutes into injury time after Kieffer Moore gave the ball away, and then slid on his knees with his jersey off in celebration at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.
Sunderland, a club with a distinguished history in English football, could celebrate returning to the top-flight for the first time in eight years.
For Watson, it was the ultimate farewell gift for his club as he'll be joining Brighton next season.
But after ripping off his shirt and sliding toward the celebrating fans on his knees, he told Sky Sports after the game that his "celebration said it all".
Sunderland defender Luke O'Nien, who needed oxygen treatment early and went off after hurting his right shoulder, later joined in the celebrations with his arm in a sling.
Sunderland join Leeds and Burnley in getting promoted from the second tier to the money-spinning EPL.
The play-off final is the most lucrative one-off match in world soccer, with Sunderland in line for an estimated revenue uplift of around Stg 200 million ($A417 million) in match-day, broadcast and commercial revenue.
"Honestly it's incredible, I don't think I can put it into words," Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson said. "It's not even sunk in what's happening but I'm gonna enjoy every moment now."
Striker Tyrese Campbell gave Sheffield United the lead and his side dominated the first half.
Spanish forward Eliezer Mayenda equalised in the 76th for Sunderland, three minutes after Sunderland coach Regis Le Bris sent on Watson.
It was a heartbreaking defeat for United, who were relegated from the Premier League last season after winning just three games and conceding 104 goals.

Woad wins on pro debut as Aussie challenge withers away

Lottie Woad has claimed her first professional victory on her debut by winning the Women's Scottish Open title by three shots. There was little cheer for Australia, however, with Karis Davidson, Cassie Porter and Minjee Lee all finishing bunched in joint 21st, 16 shots adrift of Woad. Davidson, after firing a stunning 66 on Saturday, and Porter, had been 10 shots behind the leader going into the final round. Lee, who had been joint third after the opening day, had slipped to joint 27th after her penultimate round before going round in 71 to marginally improve her final standing. Woad, the 21-year-old former world No.1 amateur from Surrey finished with a final round score of 68 after four days of competition at Dundonald Links. It was her first victory since turning professional earlier in July. She entered the final round with a two-stroke lead and made birdies on the second, third, 13th and 14th before hitting a bogey on the 16th. Woad made par on the 17th before a pinpoint approach set up a birdie on the 18th to wrap up the title. She becomes the first player to win on their professional Ladies European Tour debut since Singapore's Shannon Tan, at the Magical Kenya Ladies Open in February 2024. Woad said on Sky Sports: "It's a pretty good outcome, I guess! Definitely wasn't expecting to win my first event, but I knew I was playing well so I was kind of hoping to contend. "I played really solid today. It was pretty nice in the end, could lay up on the par five. "Links golf is really fun, don't get to play it too often. This is my first time playing links golf since the Open last year. I wasn't exactly sure how it would go, but it went fine!" Woad finished three shots ahead of second-placed Kim Hyo-joo, who fired seven birdies and three bogeys in a mixed fourth round. Julia Lopez Ramirez and Kim Sei-young shared third on 14 under, with world No.1 Nelly Korda a shot back in fifth. English duo Alice Hewson and Charley Hull finished tied for 10th and 21st, respectively. Attention now turns to the Women's Open at Royal Porthcawl, which begins on Thursday. Looking ahead to that tournament, Woad added: "Even if I hadn't won this week, I'd still be trying to win it and just trying to be up there really is all you can ask for going into the final day."

Piastri reigns in Belgium to extend world title lead

Oscar Piastri has taken a major step towards a first world championship title by defying wet conditions at the Spa-Francochamps track to win a rain-delayed Belgian Grand Prix. Heading home McLaren teammate Lando Norris, who had started on pole, means Australian driver Piastri's lead has jumped from nine to 16 points. It also halted his English rival's gathering momentum - Norris had won the previous two races to slash Piastri's overall lead to single figures. The decisive moment came early once the race got underway, Piastri passing Norris on the first racaing lap to power on to finish 3.415 seconds clear of his arch-rival. Norris reduced Piastri's lead toward the end of the race but the Australian held on with worn tires and Norris could not get close enough to challenge. "I knew Lap 1 (after the safety car) would probably be my best chance of winning the race. I got a good exit out of Turn 1, lifted as little as I dared and yeah, we had it mostly under control," Piastri said after his eighth Formula One career win and sixth of this season. Piastri had been disappointed to qualify second for the race behind Norris, but it "turns out starting second at Spa is not so bad after all," he said. The world title initiative has suddenly swung back to Piastri, who heads to Hungary for next Sunday's engagement knowing he won his first race in Budapest last season. Norris remarked: "Shoulda, woulda, coulda. Oscar deserved it, I'll review my things but still happy for the team, another 1-2 and our first 1-2 here for many, many years." The race had been red-flagged after an initial formation lap due to standing water and heavy spray affecting visibility. That resulted in a delay of an hour and 20 minutes as officials waited for conditions at the notoriously weather-prone circuit to improve. Charles Leclerc was a distant third for Ferrari as dominant champions McLaren celebrated their sixth one-two finish in 13 races and the third in a row. Titleholder Max Verstappen, in his first full race under a new Red Bull chief following the departure of Christian Horner, finished fourth. George Russell, of Mercedes, who crossed the line first in Spa last year but was disqualified due to his car being underweight, was fifth this time and Williams' Alex Albon came home sixth. Niemann on track for fifth LIV Golf success of season

Joaquin Niemann has opened up a six-stroke lead heading into the final round at LIV Golf United Kingdom. The Torque GC captain moved to 14-under par with an eight-under 65 on Saturday at the JCB Golf and Country Club in Rocester, England. The Chilean racked up nine birdies with a lone bogey at the par-4 15th hole. Bubba Watson (68) is in solo second at eight under, while fellow American Caleb Surratt (68), England's Paul Casey (68) and Poland's Adrian Meronk (70) are tied for third at seven under. Niemann, already a four-time winner on the LIV Golf tour this season, taking him to six overall, is looking to add his to his titles at Adelaide, Singapore, Mexico City and Virginia. "I had a great time. I made a lot of putts," he said. "I was laughing at it sometimes because I'm not used to seeing so many of those going in, and it's kind of cool to see that. "Other than that, I hit some good shots. Everything felt pretty much under control, off the tee, irons, putting. Yeah, just pretty happy the way I've been going through the last two days." Niemann, who was joint-second here last year, had five birdies on the front nine, including three in a row at Nos. 1-3. Niemann's Torque GC are also in front for the team championship at 24 under, three shots ahead of Legion XIII as they seek a first team title since 2023. Watson knows it will take a hot round and perhaps poor weather to keep Niemann off the top of the podium. "He's playing so good, you don't expect him to do anything, like come backwards," Watson said. "Wind direction - I haven't looked at the weather. That can change a golf course or how we play it, pin setups. "But we're going to give it our all and then hopefully that's good enough." Five players are tied for sixth at six under, including Australia's Marc Leishman (71). His Ripper GC captain Cameron Smith (72) sits at four under, with fellow teammates Matt Jones (72) two under and Lucas Herbert (74) one under.
