UPI to get faster from today; Daily caps on usage roll out from July 31
In a circular dated April 26, NPCI said the response time for crucial UPI APIs such as 'Check Transaction Status' and 'Transaction Reversal' has been slashed from 30 seconds to 10 seconds. The turnaround time for the 'Validate Address' API, which is critical for 'Pay' and 'Collect' operations, has also been reduced to 10 seconds from the earlier 15 seconds.
Enhanced backend performance for PSPs and banks
The reduced response windows apply to remitter banks, beneficiary banks, and major Payment Service Providers (PSPs), with the goal of streamlining high-volume transaction flows, especially during peak hours.
'The aforementioned revisions are intended to improve the customer experience,' NPCI said in the circular. It also directed banks and PSPs to carry out the necessary system upgrades and ensure coordination with merchants and partner networks to implement the changes.
New daily usage limits by July 31
Beginning July 31, NPCI will also enforce daily usage caps on certain UPI functions to optimise performance and reduce network congestion:
-Balance enquiry: Limited to 50 checks per user per day across all UPI apps -List account: Users can fetch their linked account list up to 25 times per app per day -Autopay mandate execution: Each mandate will receive one attempt and a maximum of three retries, all to be scheduled during non-peak UPI hours
Compliance deadline set for July 31
NPCI has set July 31, 2025, as the deadline for all stakeholders, including banks, PSPs, and partner platforms, to implement these changes.
'Members are requested to take note of this compliance requirement and communicate it to relevant stakeholders and their respective partners,' the circular added.
These measures are part of NPCI's broader effort to improve reliability and speed across India's rapidly growing UPI ecosystem, which now processes billions of transactions monthly and serves as a critical pillar of digital payments infrastructure.

PM Modi announces OCI cards for 6th generation of Indian origin citizens of Trinidad and Tobago, says
Port of Spain [Trinidad and Tobago], July 4 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (Local Time) announced that citizens of Indian origin in Trinidad and Tobago, up to the sixth generation, will now be eligible for Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards, allowing them to live and work in India without restrictions. Addressing the Indian community in Port of Spain during his first visit to the Caribbean country as Prime Minister, PM Modi underlined the deep emotional and cultural ties that bind India with its diaspora. 'Today, I'm happy to announce that the OCI cards will be given to the sixth generation of the Indian diaspora in Trinidad and Tobago. We aren't just connected by blood or surname. You are connected by belonging. India welcomes, and India embraces you!' PM Modi said. He encouraged the Indian-origin community to visit their ancestral land and deepen their connection with India. 'I encourage all of you to visit India more in person, and not just virtually via social media. Visit the villages of your ancestors. Walk the soil they walked on. Bring your children and neighbours. Bring anyone who enjoys 'Chai' and a good story. We will welcome all of you with open arms, warm hearts and Jalebi,' he said. PM Modi also congratulated Trinidad and Tobago for becoming the first country in the region to adopt India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system. 'I congratulate Trinidad and Tobago for being the first country in the region to adopt UPI. Now, sending money will be as easy as sending a Good Morning text message. I promise it will be faster than the bowling of the West Indies,' he said. Highlighting India's rapid growth, PM Modi said the country has emerged as the fastest-growing major economy and has successfully lifted millions out of poverty. 'India is the fastest-growing major economy in the world. Soon, we will be among the top three economies of the world. The fruits of India's growth and progress are reaching the most needy. India has proved that we can defeat poverty by empowering the poor... The World Bank has noted that India has lifted over 250 million people above extreme poverty in the last decade. India's growth is being powered by our innovative and energetic youth,' he said. The Prime Minister also spoke about India's recent strides in space exploration, including the Chandrayaan-3 Moon mission, the Axiom-4 mission, and the upcoming Gaganyaan mission. 'I am sure everyone amongst you feels proud when India grows. For the New India, even the sky is not the limit. All of you must have cheered when India's Chandrayaan-3 landed on the Moon. We named the place where it landed as 'Shiv Shakti point'. An Indian astronaut is onboard the International Space Station as we speak. We are now working on a manned space mission, 'Gaganyaan'. Soon, an Indian will walk on the moon, and India will have its own space station... We don't just count the stars, we try to reach them by mission like the 'Aaditya' mission... The moon is not far from us... India's achievements in space are not just ours, we are sharing its fruits with the rest of the world,' PM Modi said. This is PM Modi's first bilateral visit to Trinidad and Tobago as Prime Minister and the first such visit by an Indian Prime Minister since 1999. The visit is taking place at the invitation of Trinidad and Tobago's Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. (ANI)

Banks rule UPI rails; Bizongo under scanner
Happy Friday! A small group of banks quietly control most of the money received through UPI. This and more in today's ETtech Morning Dispatch. Also in the letter: ■ Meesho files for IPO ■ ISRO tech transfer■ Luma Fertility fundraise Four banks bag bulk of UPI beneficiary payments A small number of banks are quietly dominating the receiving side of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), India's preferred retail payments system. Yes Bank leads the pack, with nearly 40% market share, mainly driven by merchant payments. Driving the news: Yes Bank has doubled its share of payee-side UPI volumes in just two years. Both PhonePe and Paytm Payments Bank use Yes Bank's escrow accounts to process merchant payments. The bank now handles around 318 million daily transactions on the receiving side. Axis Bank also stepped up, growing its share from 7% in 2023 to about 10% now. Why it matters : While most conversations around UPI focus on payer-side risk and app dominance, the bank layer follows a similar pattern – only a few lenders are doing the heavy lifting behind the scenes. Concentration risk on UPI: NPCI is considering a 30% market share cap for third-party UPI apps to reduce concentration risk. But the enforcement deadline has been pushed back by two years. Long the top buyer of tech services, the sector is now expected to drive growth for the $280-billion IT industry, which has been stuck in a low-growth cycle. Purse strings: Banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) makes up about 30% of the Indian IT sector's total revenue, going by data from Nasscom and analysts. Now, as one of the earliest tech adopters, BFSI is also set to lead the AI and GenAI charge. It's expected to account for the largest share of spending on transformation, around 35–40%, totalling $270-290 billion, per Unearthinsight data. Accenture, which reported earnings for the March-May quarter, saw BFSI grow the fastest among its verticals, with 13% year-on-year growth. Muted Q1: As we reported on Thursday, Indian IT firms are bracing for a weak June quarter, weighed down by sluggish deal pipelines. TradeCred files criminal complaint against Bizongo, alleges Rs 69 crore fund misappropriation TradeCred has filed a criminal complaint against Bizongo, accusing the startup of misappropriating at least Rs 69 crore. The complaint, submitted to the Mumbai Police's Economic Offences Wing, names Bizongo's founders, CEO, and major investors, including Accel, B Capital, Chiratae, and IFC. Go deeper: Despite receiving funds from invoice buyers through a controlled escrow setup, Bizongo allegedly diverted customer payments into its own bank instead of routing them through the designated escrow, in breach of contractual terms, according to TradeCred's complaint. This, according to TradeCred, constitutes a double recovery, where Bizongo benefited from both upfront invoice financing and the final payment from customers. Context: Bizongo has already come under scrutiny for weak financial controls, which led to senior exits and a shift away from supply chain financing. The latest dispute highlights growing concerns about governance in India's booming private credit and invoice discounting space. In response: Bizongo, on its part, said it has been steadily paying its dues, bringing down the outstanding principal from Rs 250 crore to Rs 66 crore. It added that a settlement plan has already been shared with TradeCred. The big picture: The case highlights how rapid growth and opaque business models in startup-led finance can leave retail investors dangerously exposed. TradeCred's move could trigger oversight of platforms offering invoice-based investment products. Sponsor ETtech Top 5 & Morning Dispatch!
