Eubank, Benn set for rematch in September

The Hindu8 hours ago

Chris Eubank and Conor Benn will battle it out again on September 20 after agreeing to a rematch to a contentious bout won by Eubank in April.
Over three decades on from when their fathers Chris Eubank Sr and Nigel Benn first fought, Eubank won by unanimous decision at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The same venue has been touted again to host the event, but promoter Eddie Hearn has suggested the 90,000 capacity Wembley as a possibility.
Hearn told Ring magazine: 'Spurs is contracted - it's a fantastic stadium and it worked extremely well the first time.

'Obviously, it was sold out and this fight's even bigger, so you could possibly look at Wembley to increase the capacity.'
All three judges scored the contest 116-112, with neither man able to land the telling blow, as Benn suffered the first defeat of his professional career.
'Experience gained, lessons learned,' said Benn in a post on social media after the rematch was confirmed.
Eubank Sr defeated Nigel Benn in 1990 in a world middleweight title fight before a draw three years later.
The sons were scheduled to face each other in 2022 but the fight was cancelled because Benn failed two drugs tests.
Benn, who has denied intentional doping, was subsequently cleared to fight.

FIFA Club World Cup: Harry Kane's brace helps Bayern Munich beat Flamengo 4-2; enter quarterfinals

Bayern Munich's Harry Kane celebrates after scoring his side's second goal against Flamengo during the Club World Cup round of 16 soccer match between CR Flamengo and Bayern Munich in Miami Gardens, Fla., Sunday, June 29, 2025. (AP Photo/Rebecca Blackwell) Bayern Munich advanced to the Club World Cup quarterfinals with a 4-2 victory over Flamengo at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens on Sunday, powered by Harry Kane 's two goals. The German champions bounced back from their only tournament loss against Benfica last week to set up a quarterfinal clash with Paris Saint-Germain in Atlanta. Bayern Munich took control early when Flamengo's Erick Pulgar headed the ball into his own net from Joshua Kimmich's corner in the sixth minute. Kane extended the lead with a deflected strike three minutes later. Flamengo showed signs of life when Gerson beat Manuel Neuer in the 32nd minute to reduce the deficit, but Leon Goretzka restored Bayern's two-goal advantage shortly after. The Brazilian club continued to press, with Luiz Araújo forcing a spectacular save from Neuer in their best chance of the first half. Kane later scored his second goal on an assist from Kimmich, beating goalkeeper Agustín Rossi. Jorginho converted a penalty in the 54th minute to bring Flamengo within one goal at 3-2, but Kane sealed the victory with his third tournament goal in the 73rd minute. The match drew a near-capacity crowd at the 65,000-seat Hard Rock Stadium, with many spectators wearing Flamengo's black and red colors. The victory ensures at least four European clubs will advance to the quarterfinals and sets up a rematch of the 2020 Champions League final, which Bayern won 1-0 against PSG. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like local network access control Esseps Learn More Undo "I know a lot of my game is judged on goals and I've been doing it throughout my career, but what maybe some of the German fans and some of the Bayern fans are realizing is that I'll do anything for the team to help us win," Kane said. "We had our opportunities, but unfortunately they were the superior team in this fixture. The corner kick at the beginning of the match sort of took down our confidence a little bit," Flamengo coach Filipe Luis said through an interpreter. The match against PSG comes after the French champions defeated Lionel Messi and Inter Miami 4-0 in an earlier Sunday match. Game On Season 1 continues with Mirabai Chanu's inspiring story. FIFA Club World Cup: Bayern beats Flamengo, will face PSG in repeat fixture of UCL 2019-20 final

Harry Kane scored his second and third goals of the FIFA Club World Cup to power Bayern Munich into the quarterfinals with a 4-2 victory over Flamengo in an entertaining second-round clash on Sunday in Miami Gardens, Florida. Bayern also scored through an early own goal and through Leon Goretzka just before half-time to seal a meeting with reigning UEFA Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain, which defeated Inter Miami 4-0 earlier Sunday. In their most-recent meeting, Bayern defeated PSG 1-0 in Munich in the UCL league phase back on November 26. Gerson and Jorginho scored for Flamengo, which became the second of four Brazilian teams eliminated after Botafogo lost in extra time to domestic rivals Palmeiras on Saturday. After defeating Chelsea 3-1 in Group D play, the Rio de Janeiro side was resilient after going behind by two early. But Kane's second in the 73rd minute ultimately sealed Bayern's passage and Flamengo's first defeat in 11 matches across all competitions. Joshua Kimmich fed Kane just above the penalty arc following a sloppy Flamengo giveaway. The Englishman turned slickly, then fired a low, right-footed effort into the bottom right corner for his 41st goal in all club competitions this season. An early second-half penalty brought Flamengo back into the game. Referee Michael Oliver pointed immediately to the spot after a Flamengo cross from the right struck Michael Olise's outstretched arm. Jorginho powered in a confident penalty to rouse the majority of the crowd supporting one of Brazil's most decorated clubs. Bayern started brightly and were quickly 2-0 in front. In the sixth minute, Kimmich's inswinging corner from the right skimmed off the head of defender Erick Pulgar, who couldn't get high enough in traffic to clear the ball and instead redirected accidentally inside the far post. Three minutes later, Dayot Upamecano's excellent challenge forced Giorgian de Arrascaeta into a turnover. Kane picked up the ball, drove briefly toward goal then unleashed a low shot from 22 yards that took a deflection on its way into the bottom left corner. Flamengo responded in the 33rd minute, with Gerson reaching Luiz Araujo's layoff and powering a first-time half volley past Manuel Neuer. But Goretzka restored Bayern's two-goal advantage eight minutes later when he guided his finish from beyond the box through traffic into the bottom left corner.
