US tariffs seen having limited impact on Sarawak
Sarawak Deputy Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment Datuk Malcolm Mussen Lamoh said the state's exports to the US totalled RM1.2 billion in 2023, contributing just 0.9 per cent to overall exports.
The main export to the US was ferroalloy.
'Sarawak's main exports consist of liquefied natural gas (LNG), petroleum, palm oil and aluminium. These exports amounted to RM102.6 billion in 2023 and contributed 78.4 per cent to Sarawak's total exports.
'Our main export market is Asia, which accounted for 73.4 per cent of overall exports. This new tariff is expected to have minimal direct impact on Sarawak,' he said during the question-and-answer session at the Sarawak State Assembly sitting today.
Mussen was responding to a question from GPS-Engkilili assemblyman Dr Johnichal Rayong, who asked about the impact of the reciprocal tariffs imposed by the US on Sarawak's economy.
According to Mussen, the tariffs have limited impact on the state's economy primarily due to the export destinations of Sarawak's key commodities. LNG is predominantly exported to Japan and China; palm oil is mainly sent to China and India; and petroleum exports are largely concentrated in Peninsular Malaysia, Australia and Thailand.
'As a result, Sarawak's trade flows remain resilient, supported by its trade relations, which are more focused on other countries,' he said.
Meanwhile, Mussen said Sarawak would continue to refine its economic policies by adapting to global trade dynamics, in line with proactive measures taken by the Federal Government to address the impact of the reciprocal tariffs.
He said these measures include strengthening trade partnerships, diversifying export markets, enhancing supply chain resilience, investing in strategic industries, and exploring bilateral trade agreements to safeguard economic stability.

Sabah CM welcomes govt's relief package for rising cost of living
KOTA KINABALU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's special announcement about a special package to ease the people's burden in face of the rising cost of living is an indication of the nation's strong economic fundamentals. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor said the state government welcomed the Madani government's initiatives as they were meant to help the people. "It shows that the prime minister has the people's interest at heart," he said in a statement here today. Hajiji said the RM100 one-off assistance for all Malaysians aged 18 and above to purchase basic goods in 4,100 shopping outlets, coupled with the expansion of the Rahmah Madani sales in every constituency, is a boon to the people. He also added that the lowering of the RON95 price to RM1.99 per litre through the targeted subsidy initiative, which was expected to benefit more than 18 million Malaysians had fulfilled the aspirations of the people. "The declaration of the eve of Malaysia Day (Sept 15) as a public holiday is also the Federal Government's recognition of the special day for the whole country," he said.

KUALA LUMPUR: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said (pic) tabled a motion in the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday (July 23) to extend the debate on the Auditor-General's Report. This is to facilitate institutional checks and balances, she said, adding that the move is part of ongoing reforms to enhance the efficiency, transparency, and effectiveness of public entities. "In line with the principles of transparency and accountability, the government has taken a significant step by not only tabling the report in this Honourable House but also allowing it to be openly debated. "This is a departure from previous administrations that only tabled the report without debate,' she said while tabling the motion, adding that since June 6, 2023, the report has been debated four times. What ‘unity govt' when DAP always attacking us, says GPS man
Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang said Sarawak DAP has been relentlessly on the offensive against the GPS state administration. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : A Sarawak assemblyman has questioned the sincerity of the 'unity' in the Madani government, citing the state DAP chapter's repeated attacks of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition. Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang said the apparent unity in the federal level contradicted the reality in Sarawak, where DAP has been relentlessly on the offensive against the GPS state administration. He cited Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's remarks at the recent retreat involving the government's 143 MPs, where the Pakatan Harapan chairman said the unity of the federal government was intact. '(Anwar) even thanked Barisan Nasional chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and GPS chief whip Fadillah Yusof for their unwavering spirit of unity,' Lo said, according to Dayak Daily. 'But we must ask, what unity is Anwar referring to when Sarawak DAP continues its sustained attacks on GPS?' Lo pointed out that DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook and adviser Lim Guan Eng had apologised to GPS over past statements by DAP leaders that offended the Sarawak government and people. The Sarawak United Peoples' Party deputy secretary-general said these apologies, made prior to the unity government's formation, were quickly discredited by Sarawak DAP's actions. 'Since then, Sarawak DAP has done nothing but oppose GPS at every turn, questioning our policies, casting doubt on our initiatives and repeatedly undermining Sarawak's leadership. 'That is not sincerity; that is political theatrics staged for public relations, not rooted in principles.'
